UNITED STATES ALEXANDER o; BONSTEEL, or WILSON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR or ONE- HALE TO oscAR s. MOOHESNEY, OF sAME PLACE.
THILL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,439, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed November 23, 1888. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER 0. Bon- STEEL, of \Vilson, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill- Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable oth; ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invent-ion relates to an improvement in I thill-couplings, the object being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction, and at the same time durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a detached view of the several parts.
A represents a metallic clip, on the front face of which is formed a box, 13, which latter is provided with the openings or recesses O D, adjoining and communicating with each other, and also with the slot or opening E, leading into the opening 0. These openings are preferably of the form shown in the drawings, the opening 0 being semicircular, and the opening D, adjoining the latter, being in the form of an are. In thesaid opening D,and completely filling the same, is secured a rubber cushion, E, the inner face of which is concave, thus changing the opening 0 from a semicircle to nearly a complete circle.
F is the thill'-iron,the upper portion of which is bent to conform with the shape of the thill G, the lower portion being provided with opening H, and bent at an angle to the said upper portion, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When it is desired to couple the two parts, the shafts G are raised and thrown back of the perpendicular, and passing the end of the thill-iron F through the slot E and into the opening 0, and allowing the forward portion of the box B to pass through the perforation or hole H in the iron F, the end of the latter resting against the sides of the opening 0. When the parts are in these positions, the shafts are dropped, thus locking the two parts together, the lower bent end of the iron F resting flush against the sides of the opening 0, thus preventing all rattling.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a clip constructed with a recess in its forward jaw, said recess being formed with projections at the upper and lower ends of the openings leading thereto, of a flexible cushion adapted to be forced laterally into said recess, and a thill-iron provided with an eye, the end bar of which engages the inner side of the cushion, while the sides of the eyeengage the edges of the cushion and prevent its lateral displacement, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER O. BONSTEEL.
