3 Claims. (Cl. 240-78) This invention relates to an incandescent light fixture adapted for installation in a ceiling recess.
One object of the invention is to provide an incandescent light fixture for installation in a ceiling recess which may be completely installed and electrically connected from below. the ceiling through the ceiling opening. Another object is to provide a recessed incandescent light fixture which may be assembled and wired by the installer on the job. Another object is to provide a simple inexpensive construction for a recessed incandescent light fixture. 7
These and other objects are attained by my invention which will be understood from the following description, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on the line 11 of the ceiling view of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the recessed lighting fixture as viewed from below the ceiling;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a'disassembly of the light fixture shown in perspective; and
Fig. 7 is a side elevational view of the wiring box and plaster frame sub-assembly collapsed for compactness in shipping.
Referring to the drawings showing a preferred form of my invention, my light fixture consists of a rectangular metal plaster frame 11 having front member 12 and integral side members 13 and 14, the side portion opposite the front member being open, the space being spanned by a wiring box, as will be explained. The front member 12 and side members 13 and 14 have intumed flanges, numbered respectively, 15, 16 and 17. The plaster frame is arranged to be attached to the structural members outlining the recess in the ceiling structure, and the attachment means may consist of nails 18 driven into the structural members through holes 19 in the front and side members.
The open portion of the plaster frame 11 is spanned and closed by the wiring box 22. The wiring box con sists of end members 23, top member 24 and back member 25, the end members and top member being provided with conveniently placed knock-outs 26 which may be removed in the usual manner to provide suitably positioned holes for connecting the conduit 27 by means of the lock nuts 28 to carry the electrical lead wires 29 into the wiring box. The end members 23 are provided with pivot tabs 30 extending inwardly from the lower in ner front corners, these being disposed and arranged tov engage pivot holes 31 provided in the free ends of the side members 13 and 14 (see Fig. 3). A friction catch boss 32 is also provided at the lower inner corner of the end members 23 which is adapted to engage a corresponding ice,
. t 2 g hole 33 in the free end of the side members 13 and 14 (see Fig. 4). The open front face of the wiring box 22 may be closed by a pivoted door 34, there being pivot tabs 35 extending from the edges of the door at the lower corner thereof, these being arranged to pivot in the pivot holes 36 in the end members 23.
A tubular socket holder 40 consisting of a closed end tubular body 41 having a screw base lamp socket 42 projecting from one side of said body near the closed end 43 thereof, the back wall of said tubular body 41 being extended to form a tab 46 for attachment, as by welding (or other attaching means), to the end members 23 of the wiring box 22. Lead wires 44 from the socket 42 to the open end are provided, for connection to the power leads 29 inside the wiring box. The door 34 is provided with a cut-out window 45 which permits the extension of the tubular body 41 into the wiring box 22 to completely enclose the electrical wiring.
A squared dome or box-like reflector 50 of deep drawn metal and having a rectangular outline at its open end is provided, to be installed (after the wiring is completed) from below through the opening defined by the flanges 15, 16 and 17 of the plaster frame and the back member 25 of the wiring box 22. The margins of the reflector walls are bent back to form a trough 52 facing upward, and the outer wall of said trough is then reverse-bent downward to form the down-turned margins 53. The reflector 50 is attached to the plaster frame flanges by means of screws 54 extending through holes 55 in the trough 52 of the reflector into threaded holes 56 in the flanges 15, 16 and 17 of the plaster frame 11. The refiector 50 is provided with a light socket hole 57 in the side surface thereof, said hole being adapted to receive the screw base lamp socket 42 of the socket holder 40. The reflector may also be provided with a removable door 58 on the side opposite the wiring box' 22, the door being positioned by punch-out holding tabs 59 in the wall of the reflector and in the door. This door 58 permits servicing of the lamp from the space above the ceiling, when desired.
A diffuser frame 62 having an outwardly turned finish flange 63 and anupwardly turned rim or boss 64 adapted to form a friction holding contact between said frame and the inside wall of the down-turned margins 53 of the reflector edge, the frame being also provided with inwardly turned flanges 67 and 68 adapted to receive the edges of the diffuser plate 69.
In the preferred embodiment above described, the
socket is positioned to coincide with a hole in one side of the reflector. The lamp socket, however, may be positioned in the top central portion of the reflector 50, there being provided a knock-out 70 to provide the central hole for the socket 42, the socket holder 40 being then attached to the top member 24 of the wiring box 22.
The advantages of this fixture construction will be apparent from the above description of the details ofits assembly and installation. The installation of the fixture may be completed from below the ceiling, and the wiring from the power leads to the socket may be completed from below prior to the installation of the reflector and the diffuser. The socket member may be attached either before or after the wiring box is installed in the recess on the plaster frame. The door 34 provides means for ample access to the wiring box and at the same time makes a complete enclosure of the wiring. The fixture is simple to assemble, and may be manufactured atrlow cost.
I claim:
1. In combination, a plaster frame, a wiring box, and an incandescent light fixture, said plaster frame consisting of a front member and two integral side members forming an open-sided rectangle, each member being provided with an inturned top flange; said wiring box cona ian-a 3 sisting of an open faced rectangular box having a base extending between and attached to said frame side members at the open side of said plaster frame, the open face of said box being directed toward the opening of said plaster fr anie'tdefined 'by said front and side members thereof; anda light fixture consist i ngof a domed reflector having a socket hole in one side, said reflector also being provided with a rectan'gularperiphery 'detachably connected to the flanges of said plaster frame, and a tubular socket holder having a lamp socket protruding from its side adjacent one end and coinciding with said hole therefor provided in said reflector, the other end of said socketholder being rigidly attached to said wiring box; said plaster frame and wiring box when assembled withina ceiling opening and before the attachment of 'said domed reflector of said light fixture providing an opening for making the electrical connections to said fixture.
,4 2. The combination defined in claim 1, in which a door is provided to close said open face of said wiring box,
said door being hingedly mounted on said wiring box.
3. The combination defined in claim 1, in which said fixture includes a diffuser assembly of diffuser frame and diffuser plate removably attached to the periphery of said reflector. I
