UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. FIRM, or JERSEY orrr, NE JERSEY.-
REEL AND ROD FOR-WINDING PAPER AND PROTECTINGv THE SAME IN THE ROLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 297,775, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed February 10, 1883. (iiIodeL) tube or tubular core 'on which the paper has heretofore been wound,"and to make the rod heretofore employed'i'or binding on the protecting-heads subserve both purposes, thus also saving the costof returning the tubes. The invention consists in the details of construction, as hereinafter specifically set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figurel is a side elevation of sufficient of the discharge end of a paper-making machine to illustrate. one partof my invention. -Fig. 2'is a partlysectional elevation of myimproved rod, on a larger scale, with a cap or reel socket in position, and a frictionwheel for use in damping-machines, also in position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cap or reel socket for the rod. -Fig'. gt is a cross-section of one of the roll protecting heads; and Fig. 5 is a partly-sectional view, in elevation, of a roll of paper made in accordance with my'invention.
A is the rotary discharge-roller of a papermaking machine set in hearings in the frame B, and suitably driven in the direction indicated by the arrow, and at a speed commensurate with the speed of the machine.
0 is a rod, the same as or similar to that heretofore used in securing the heads or caps to tube-wound rolls of paper. (See my Reissued Letters Patent No. 6, 533, dated July 6, 1875.) This rod has screw threaded ends 2 2, with which are engaged threaded socketcaps 3 3, having squared ends 4 4.. These caps are applied to the rod when it is to receive the web of paper, and they then form journals for it in the boxes G of the automati-- cally-compensating windingframe D, their squared ends 4 or 4 serving to receive a removable crank-handle for operating the rod when'de'sired, andalso top'ermit the use of a automatically adjust itself .to the increasing size of the winding-roll, at the same time exerting a tension on the paper sufficient to prevent its crumpling, creasing, or its winding irregularly.
The heads 8 eni loved in connection with I these rolls of paper made on rods are preferably di'scous boards provided with central orifices having metallic screw-threaded bush-' ings 9, which are engaged with the threaded ends 2 2 of the rod 0, when said heads are applied to a roll of paper, and said heads .may be retained upon said rod by thumb- -nu-ts 13 or other equivalent fastening-s.
In Fig. 5 the parts are all shown in position, and from this figure the operation of my invention. will be perfectly apparent. The heads 8 maybe applied'to the rod beforethe paper is wound on the same, if desired.
' hat I claim is' 1. A paper-rollhead-holding rod provided with threaded ends, and socketed caps adapted to be applied thereto to admitof the rotation of the rod to roll paper thereon, substantially as shown and described.
2. A m ill-wonnd roll of paper having a central rod, directly upon which the paper is wound, and heads attached to and secured by said rod, substantially as shown; and de- JOSEPH L. FIRM. [L.
