LlFTlNG-JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,705, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed March 4, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY XV. MOHANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Horeb, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Lifting-Jack, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to' a device for lifting 1o railroad-tracks and other heavy objects; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be capable of raising or lifting heavy objects with but little exertion on the part of the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for this purpose which shall be cheap and simple in its construction and durable in use.
With these ends in view the invention con- 2o sists in the improved construction and combi'- nations of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspectivel of a jack constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section onthe line x a: of Fig. 2. Fig. Liisaperspectiv-e view of the lever-disk detached.
In the accompanying drawings, in which 3o like letters refer to corresponding parts in the several figures, A represents a suitable up- .right or support, to the upper end of which is secured a jackhead or bracket, B. This jack-head or bracket B is provided with an extended slot or opening, a, in which works the operating-lever, as will be presently described. 'Ihe `jack-head or bracket B is also provided with an enlarged opening, which forms the seat or bearing foraroller, G,which, 4o like the bracket B, is constructed of metal. This lifting disk or roller is provided with a recess for the reception of alever, whichworks in the slot or opening a of the bracket B. Upon this lifting disk-or roller, which has bearing in the opening of the bracket or jackhead B, are secured downwardlyextending arms D, which are pivotally connected to said roller. Upon the lower ends of these arms is otally secured one end of a lifting portion, E, the lower end of which is provided with an an guiar piece to engage arailroad-rail; orit may vices which will act with equal efficiency.
Upon each side of the upright A is secured a bracket or handle, F, which are for the purpose of transporting the jack from place to place.
H represents a bar or lever for raising or operating the roller, and is adapted to be inserted within the opening thereof.
The operation of my device is as follows: The angular end of the portion E is inserted under the rail, and the lever inserted within the opening or the recess of the roller, which is then at the forward end of the slot of the bracket A, and upon thelever Hbeing pushed downwardly or rearwardly the rolleris caused lto revolve until the rail has been sufficiently raised or the end of the slot has been reached, which brings the arms on a direct line with the axis of the roller, thus holding the rail in a raised position without any power being eX- erted.
It will be obvious from the above description that my improvement is simple inits conmay be raised with but little power or force in operating the lever.
- Having fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.v .The combination, with a suitableupright per end thereof, said jack-head being provided with a slot extending around a portion of its circumference and provided with an enlarged opening, substantially as set forth.
Vor standard provided at its upper end with a provided a transversebolt, upon which is pivn beprovided with other suitable lifting de-` or standard, of a jack-head secured to the up- 2. The combination, with a suitable upright struction, and that by its use weighty objects jack-head or bracket having a slot and opening, as shown, of a'roller having bearing in said opening, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a jack-head or bracket supported upon a suitable standard, and provided with a slot and opening, as
vided at their ends with a pivoted portion having an angular end, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I5 my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY VILLAM MOHANY.
