Description

S. W. LINN March 28, 1961 MAGAZINE FOR APPLYING RAZOR BLADES TO A HOLDER Filed April 25, 1958 tates MAGAZINE FOR APPLYING RAZOR BLADES TO A HOLDER Stanley W.'Linn, 73-58 192nd St., Flushing, NY. Filed Apr. 25, 1958, Ser. No. 730,888
1 Claim. (Cl. 20616) This invention relates to a razor magazine and dispensing structure.
When expendable razor blades are employed as, for example, in the hair styling industry, it is necessary to remove the dull blade from the holder and replace it with a sharpened one. Such changes of blades must be made quickly and with a maximum of safety to the user.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide a magazine which will contain a plurality of blades and which will make the blades easily available.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a blade holding magazine whereby the new blade may be inserted within the blade holder without the necessity for handling the blade itself.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a blade magazine which will maintain the blades in proper spaced relationship for easy engagement by the blade holder while at the same time preserving the keen edge of blade from contact with surfaces which may damage said edge.
A further feature of the present invention is its use of a blade holder receiving slot for guiding the holder into engagement with the blade.
Another feature of the present invention is its use of spacer members for keeping the blades in spaced relationship for easy engagement by the blade holder.
A feature of the present invention is its use of blade guiding ribs within the magazine to maintain the proper blade position at all times.
The invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective, partially cut away, showing a complete embodiment of the present invention with the blade holder partially inserted therein.
Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on line 2-2 in Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 in Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of the spacer ejection end of the magazine.
Figure 5 is a section taken on line 55 in Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings and specifically to Figures 1 and 2, indicates a razor consisting of a handle 11, and a blade holding structure 12. The blade holder 12 is provided with a slot 13 to receive a razor blade 14 therein.
The blades 14 are carried within the magazine 15. The magazine is preferably made in two parts consisting of an upper casing 16 and a base or lower member 17. The upper casing 16 is in the form of a shell having end walls 18 and 19, sidewalls and 21, and a top member 22.
The upper casing 16 may be made in one piece as shown in Figure l and secured to the base 17 in any suitable manner after the blades are assembled therein. The end walls 18 and 19 are provided with slots as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 for a hereinafter described purpose. The blades 14 are disposed within the magazine 15 one upon the other as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 and are separated from each other by spacers 25.
The spacers 25 may be made of any suitable material such as cardboard, plastic or metal. As shown in Figure 3, the spacers are of a size and shape which will permit them to lie between the back portions of the razor blades within the dispenser and keep the backs 26 of the razor blades 14 sufiiciently spaced from each other to enable the slot of the blade holding portion 12 of the razor 10 to engage the backs of said blades. A folded flat spring 27 is placed between the bottom 17 of the magazine 15 and the razor blades 14. As blades are removed from the magazine 15, the fiat spring 27 forces the remaining blades up against the top 22 of the magazine 15 so that they can be engaged by the holder 12.
The casing 16 is provided with ribs 28 which extend vertically along the inside of the side walls 18, 19 for the purpose of maintaining the alinement of the blades 14. A rib 29 is also located in the top of the casing 16 for the purpose of limiting the upward travel of the blades 14. The rib 29 is out of the path of the blade engaging portion 12 of the holder 10 as shown in Figure 3 and keeps the uppermost blade 14 from bearing against the inside surface of the top 22. The opening 23 in the side wall 18 is somewhat funnel shaped as illustrated in Figure 2 for the purpose of guiding the blade engaging portion 12 of the holder 10 into the magazine. It will be observed from an examination of Figure 2 that the slot 24 is positioned slightly below the plane of the inner surface of the top 22. It will also be noted that the slot 24 is substantially smaller than the blades 14 so that the blade cannot be forced out of the magazine as the blade holder 12 is slipped over the said blade.
The operation of the magazine 15 and the manner in which the blade holder 10 engages the blades 14 can be followed from the structure shown in Figures 1 and 2 and is as follows:
With the razor 10 disposed in the position shown in Figure 1 so that the blade engaging portion 12 lies in the plane of the blades 14, the operator guides the blade holder into the slot 23. The slot 13 in the blade engaging portion 12 of the holder 10 slips over the back 26 of the blades 14 as pressure is applied to the razor 10. As the blade engaging portion 12 is advanced, its lower leading edge will bear against the spacer member 25. Further advance of the blade holder 10 will force the spacer member 25 out of the slot 24 causing it to be ejected from the magazine 15. When the blade engaging portion 12 reaches the limit of its travel Within the magazine 15, the blade back 26 will be completely within the slot 13 and the razor Ill together with the blade 14 may be withdrawn from the magazine 15.
It will be noted that the slot 23 is somewhat key-hole shaped to permit the blade and holder 12 to be withdrawn together.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A razor blade magazine and dispenser comprising a.
casing, a quantity of substantially rectangular razor blades in said casing, a spacer member, narrower than the razor blades, between each of said blades, spaced end and side walls, a top and a bottom on said casing, a first slot in one of the end walls adjacent the top of said casing,
said slot beingof a size to permit the passage of a razor blade therethrough, a second slot in the other end wall substantially in the plane of the first slot, said second slot being of a size which will not permit the passage of a razor blade but will permita spacer to: be ejected therethrough, and spring means in the bottom of the casing to urge the blades in the direction of the first'and second slots.
