H. Woon.l 'WOODEN B0X.
` No. 297,654. Patented Apr. 29,1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
HENRY WOOD, OE WELLINGTON, OHIO.
wooo EN Box.
SPECIFICATION formingrpart of Letters Patent No. 297,654, dated April 29, 1884.
vApplication filed December 28, 1883. (No model.)
To L ZZ whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY-WOOD, of Wellington, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wooden Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and'exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in boxes for packing and shipping butter, fruit, Snc., the object of the same being to provide a box with a series 'of compartments, each compartment forming a complete box in itself,
and adapted to be separated from the other compartment or compartments. A further object is to provide aV device of this character Which shall be simple and economical in construction and at the same time durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain details in construction, as Will be more fully described,
and pointed out in the claim.'
In the accompanying1 drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying vmy Invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of a box, each compartment provided With an independent cover; and Fig. 3 is a view in elevation, partly in section, of the box,
each compartment of the same being provided with an independent top and bottom.
A represents a box divided into a series of compartments by partitions C O. The partitions C C, forming the adjacent ends of two compartments, are nearto but independent of each other, suftlcient space being left between them for a free movement of a saw therein. l If desired, the box may-be provided With handles for more conveniently handling it; but these may be dispensed with, if desired.v
To enable the compartments to be easily and quickly separated without the necessity of removing the lid D to ascertain the position of the compartment, a separate cover, D', lcan be secured to each compartment, as shown in Fig. 2, the side edges of each cover D forming the boundaries of its compartment. By this arrangement a saw can be introduced into the space between the partitions and the two sides and bottom severed.
Instead of the above construction, the top can be in a continuous piece, as shown at D,
Fig. l, and a side of each compartment formed of independent pieces E', also shown in Fig. l.
InFig. 3 I have shown the tops Dand bottom B, made of independent sections, and the sides E of continuous pieces; but, if desired,
both sides can be made in sections4 and the top By thusy constructing a compartmentbox no difficulty and bottom of continuous pieces.
is experienced in separating the.` compartments, as spaces are left on one or more sides, through which'- the saw can be introduced.
Again, by making one or "more of the four sides of each compartment entirely independent of the adjacent compartment, I am enabled to use short or Waste lumber, and thereby considerably reduce the cost of manufacture.
After the package has reached its destination, the compartments can be separated Without disturbing their contents by inserting a saw between the partitions and cutting through the top orbottom or sides, as the case may be. After the compartments are separated each one constitutes a box in itself.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A box divided into a series of compartments by adjacent partitions, which latter constitute ends of the adjacent compartments, each compartment of said box having one or more of its four sides entirely independent of the ad jacent compartment, substantially as set forth.v In testimony whereof I have signed this specication in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
' HENRY WOOD.
