ATTORNEYS\ United States Patent SEWING EXTENSION TABLE TOP ATTACHMENT The present invention relates to an electric motor drive clutch unit and light attachment for sewing machines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a power drive unit for foot operated sewing machines wherein the speed of the machine is controlled through a clutch.
Another object of the invention is to provide a power drive unit of the class described above wherein a brake and a clutch are simultaneously operated so that the brake is applied as the clutch is released and the brake is released as the clutch is applied.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described above which includes a fiexibly supported work light for illuminating the working area of the sewing machine.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a drive mechanism of the class described above which can be attached and detached from a sewing machine without modifying the structure of the machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a power drive mechanism for sewing machines which is inexpensive to manufacture, easy to use, and which can be at tached and detached with a minimum of effort.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section taken along the line 22 of Figure 1, looking in the di rection of the arrows.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical cross section taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken along the line 4-4 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the work counter with the sewing machine and other parts removed for convenience of illustration.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary end elevation of the lower end of the operating link taken substantially along the line 6-6 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures, the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a sewing machine equipped with. a power drive unit generally indicated at 11 constructed in accordance with the invention.
The sewing machine 10 includes a base frame 12 having a horizontal platform 13 supported thereon. The platform 13 supports a sewing head 14 and is provided with a belt slot 15 through which a belt 16 extends from a pulley 17 on the sewing machine head 14 to a pulley 18 journalled on the base frame 12.
The power drive mechanism 11 is attached to the sewing machine 10 and includes a platform 19 arranged adjacent to the platform 13 in the same plane therewith.

A pair of spaced parallel cleats 20, 21 overlie the plat forms 13 and 19 and are secured to the platform 19 by securing elements 22.
The sewing machine head 14 rests on the cleats 20, 21 and has its feet 23 secured thereto by bolts 24 which extend through the platform 13 to secure the platform 19 thereto as well as securing the head 14 to the platform 13.
A motor support bracket 25 is secured in spaced parallel relation to the underside of the platform 19 and is provided with a longitudinally extending arm 26 having a socket 27 formed on the outer end thereof, An electric motor 28 issecured to the bracket 25 by securing elements 29 and is arranged for longitudinal adjustment on the bracket 25.
A face plate clutch, indicated generally at 30, includes a driving member 31 secured to and driven by a shaft 32 forming part of the motor 28.
A bearing bracket 33 is provided with an upstanding post 34 extending into the socket 27 and adjustably secured therein by securing elements 35. The bearing bracket 33 has spaced parallel bearings 36, 37 arranged in horizontal alignment coaxially with the shaft 32 of the motor 28. A shaft 38 is journalled in the bearings 36, 37 and is arranged for axial sliding movement therein.
The shaft 38 has a driven clutch member 39 secured to the end thereof adjacent the driving clutch member 31 and adapted for cooperative engagement with the driving clutch member 31 upon sliding movement of the shaft 38. A belt pulley 40 is secured to the shaft 38 adjacent the driven clutch member 39, and a brake pulley 41 is secured to the shaft 38 between the bearings 36, 37.
A pulley 42 is fixed to the pulley 18 and revolves therewith. A belt 43 is trained over the pulley 40 and the pulley 42 whereby rotary movement of the pulley 40 will rotate the pulley 42, and hence the pulley 17 of the sewing machine head 14.
The bearing bracket 33 has a pivot yoke 44 arranged beneath the bearing 36 and extending laterally therefrom. A dog leg lever 45 is secured in the pivot yoke 44 by pivot pin 46 intermediate the opposite ends thereof. The dog leg lever 45 has a threadedly adjusted shaft contact member 47 arranged for axial contact with the shaft 38.
Movement of the dog leg lever 45 about the pivot 46 being effective to slide the shaft 38 axially to engage the clutch 30. The dog leg lever 45 is biased by a spring 48 into clutch disengaged position.
A brake shoe 49 is mounted for vertical adjustment on the dog leg lever 45 and is arranged to engage the brake pulley 41 upon disengagement of the clutch 30, and to be disengaged from the brake pulley 41 upon engagement of the clutch 30.
A link 50 has an eye 51 in its upper end which is looped through an eye 52 in the free end of the dog leg lever 45. The lower end of the link 50 has an eye 53 formed therein and engaged over the drive pin 54 of a foot controlled treadle 55 journalled in the support frame 12.
An electric control switch 56 is mounted on the plat form 19 for controlling the operation of the motor 28. A lamp 57 is provided with a flexible neck 58 extending up wardly from a base 59 secured to the platform 19.
In the use and operation of the invention, pivotal movement of the foot treadle 55 in the base frame 12 moves the link 50 so as to swing the dog leg lever 45 into clutching applying brake releasing position. By varying the pressure of the treadle 55 the clutch 30 can be caused to slip sufficiently to regulate the speed of the sewing machine head 14 to any desired extent. The motor 28 is a constant speed motor and will rotate the driving clutch member 31 at a constant speed.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications andadaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is: A power drive attachment suspension for sewing machinesof the type including a generally horizontal fiat work platform comprising a generally horizontal flat auxiliary platform adjacent the work platform and adapted to have a power drive unit for said sewing machine secured independing relation to the underside thereof, a pair of spaced parallel cleats extending across the upper surface of said'auxiliary platform and adapted to extend across the upper surface of said work platform with the sewing machine secured to the upper surface of the cleats, securing elements detachably securing. said cleats to the upper face of said auxiliary platform, and securing. elements for detachably securing said cleats to said work platform with-said auxiliary platform positioned with its upper surface in'a horizontal plane with the upper surface of said work platform.
