UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH N. GOLDBACHER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEGGIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,538, dated March `25, 1884:.
Application iiled January 31, 1884. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, .IosEPH N. GOLDBAOHER, of the city, county, and State of'New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leggins or `Trousers-Protectors, of which the following is a full, complete, and 'exact specification, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to the construction of a leggin or trousers-protector secured to t-he leg of the wearer by providing the longitudinal edges with ribs of rigid material` brokenor separated at certain intervals, and fastened to each other by any suitable means, the principal feature of the invention consisting in supplying the leggin with adequate means for keeping it in position when on the leg, and in so arranging it that when not in use it can be folded up and placed in the pocket.
Figures l and 2 are plan views of leggins embodying the invention.
In the drawings', A indicates the leggin, and B B are the longitudinal edges ofthe same. Along these edges I fasten `to the material of the leggin the ribs, (indicated by 0,) made of some rigid material, as whalebone, steel,.or brass. These ribs O are separated from each other at certain intervals, (indicated by 1),)
vand may be` articulated, piece to piece, by any suitable contrivance, as by hinged joint or links, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. `'.lhrough a fold along the upper edge of the leggin is i passed an elastic string or band, (indicated by M,) fastened at its two extremities to the up-` per ends, respectively, of the uppermost ribs y G. The edges B B, supplied with the ribs C are brought together and held either by corresponding hooks and eyes fixed in the ribs C or by any other of the well-known and suitable means for fastening. These ribs C may or may not be articulated to each other; but it will be found advisable to hinge or link them together in some way to prevent their Wearing through the material of the leggin and protruding, which would take place unless the .ribs are j oined. In arranging the longitudinal edges of the leggin with separated ribs, and in providing them with suitable means of fastening, and with the elastic string M, I am enabled to produce a leggin which can be fastened tightly on the leg of the wearer, and which will retain its position, whether worn over the pantaloons or otherwise, and when not in use can be folded up and placed in the pocket. In the use of the leggin as a trouwell to make the material of the leggin waterproof.
This invention may also be used to hold the gauntlet of a glove in position on the arm.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An improved leggin or trousers protector provided along each of its longitudinal edges with ribs of rigid material broken or separated at certain intervals, arranged substantially as set forth.
2. An improved leggin or trousers protector provided along each of its longitudinal edges with ribs Aof rigid 'material broken or separated at' certain intervals and articulated to each other, substantially as described, and for the purpose set-forth.
3. 'An improved leggin or trousers protector provided with the elastic string M and the ribs C, articulated to'each other, arranged substantially in the manner described, and for fthe purpose set forth.
