,2 Claims. (Cl.,4021) This invention relates generally to wrist watches and more particularly to new and useful improvements in a wrist watch band. i
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a wrist .watch band .having means at both ends thereof for. mounting initials and for fastening the;
ends of the band-to a-wrist watch case. .Another object of the invention is to provide -an ex- -pansible wrist watch band with a combined watchcase cla sp andinitial holder. at eachendthereof.
in-specific object of the invention ;is to provide a wrist watch band with a removable initial bearing plate for enhancing the beauty of the band and for serving to identify the owner of the band.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a wrist watch with a band embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged top plan view of the wrist watch band of Fig. l, in normal contracted position.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged bottom plan view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the combined watchcase clasp and initial holder in open position, the initial being removed, on a larger scale.
Fig. 5 is a top perspective view of the initial unit.
Fig. 6 is a bottom perspective view thereof.
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view of the wrist watch band showing the link members in stretched condition.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view taken on the plane of the line 8-8 of Fig. 3, on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view taken on the plane of line 99 of Fig. 2, on an enlarged scale.
Referring in detail to the drawings, in Fig. l a rectangular-shaped wrist watch 10 is shown fastened to and supported by a metal wrist watch band 12 made in accordance with the present invention. With particular reference to Figs. 2 and 3, the wrist watch band 12 comprises an elongated stretchable rectangular-shaped body 14 adapted to encircle the wrist of the wearer of the Watch. The body is composed of a number of superposed outer metal link members 16 disposed transversely of the body in normal juxtaposed contacting relation as viewed in Fig. 2, and number of juxtaposed contacting metal inner link members 18, each disposed at a slight angle to the horizontal as viewed in Figs. 1 and 3. Each inner link member 18 crosses over an outer link member 16 and is pivotally connected midway its ends to said cross-over link 16 as indicated at 20 and has its ends pivotally secured to the ends of the next adjacent link atent 2,954,622 Patented et. 4, was
2 members 16 on both sides of the crossed-over link member 16 as indicated at 22 as shown in Fig. 7.
In accordance with thepresent invention, at each end of the wrist watch band 12, there is a device 21 for fastening the end of the band to the rectangular-shaped case 23 of the wrist watch 10 and for housing an initial, such as one of the initials of the wearer of the watch, such as the initial B or the initial S shown in Figs. '1 and 2. This device, as shown in detail in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, includes a hinge or pivot pin 26 passing through a pair of spaced sleeves, constituting knuckles 28, 28, formed alongone side of the outermost outer link member 30 at both ends thereof and projecting outwardly therefrom. Each outermost outer link member 30 is pivotally secured to one end of the next adjacent outer link member .16 by means of a perforated lug 32 andan eyelet 34 extending through said lug and through an aligned opening .in the end of the adjacent link member 16. The other end of the outermost outer link member 30 is pivotally connected to one end of the crossing inner member 18.
A rectangular-shaped metal plate 38 is pivotally fastened to the hinge or pivot pin 26 by means of a sleeve formed along one .end of the plate and constituting a knuckle 40 disposed .between the knuckles 28, 28. The plate is formed with flanges 42, 42 along its sides and with a flange 44 along its outer free end. Flange 44 is notched midway its ends as indicated at 46 and project ing into said notch is a projection constituting a finger piece 48 for manipulating the plate.
Another complementary plate 50 slightly larger in dimensions than plate 38 is hingedly or pivotally connected to the pivot pin 26. Plate 50 is formed with side flanges 52 disposed outwardly of the side flanges 42, 42 of the plate 38 and formed with bearing openings 54 at the inner ends thereof to receive the pivot pin 26. The outer free end of the plate 50 is formed with a curled sleeve portion 60 constituting a bearing member for encirclement around a crosspin 62 on the adjacent end of the watchcase 23 for fastening the watch to the band. The sleeve 60 is formed with a notch 63 to provide clearance for the finger piece 48 on plate 38. A window 64 is formed in the center of plate 50, and each side flange 52, 52 is formed with an inwardly projecting teat 66 adapted to snap into an indenture 68 pressed into the adjacent flange 42 on the plate 38. The plate 38 is adapted to be swung toward and into plate 50 and nested therein thereby forming a housing or space 70 for a removable plate 72 constituting a carrier for exhibiting an initial such as the initial S shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, or such as the initial B shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Plate 72 is shaped similarly to the plates 38 and 50 with side flanges 74 but is smaller in dimensions so as to fit Within the housing or space 70. The body of plate 72 is indented to form a platform 76 on one surface of which the initial may be printed or formed in any suitable manner. The platform 76 protrudes through the window 64, the edge walls thereof snugly fitting against the edge walls of the window. When the plate 72 is thus fitted in the space or housing 70, the flanges 74 tend to spread out interlocking with the indentures 68 on flanges 42 of'plate 38 and the initial is visible through the window as seen in Fig. 1.
The initials add to the attractiveness and beauty of the watch and also serve to identify the owner of the watch. The initial bearing plate can be readily removed and a plate bearing a difierent initial readily substituted therefor.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1.
