PLIERS FOR ATTACHING PIN-TICKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,424, dated March 18, 1884.
Application filed August 10, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, A UILLA J. Pram, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of De Graft, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pliers for Attaching Pin-Tickets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device for fastening merchants i'narkingtabs or pin-tickets to goods, obviating the tedious handling and the turning down of the pins, and the liability of pricking ones self with the pinpoints. The fastening of these tickets onto goods by hand is not only subject to the chiliculties above enumerated, but that mode consumes entirely too much time and is very unsatisfactory.
My device consists of a pair of pliers, one jaw of which is provided with a tongue ele vated enough to permitthe insertion of a ticket and just wide enough to fit between the pins. The other jaw has concave grooves, transverse) y arranged, part ofth em extending across the face, and some of them consisting of two concaves, meeting at the center and forming an arch. The clasping of the pins against the single concave grooves clutches the pins on each other, while in clasping them against the doubleconcave grooves the center arch turns the pins out and clinches them on the cloth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention with the ticket in place; Fig. 2, a view without the ticket, showing the tongue; Fig. 3, a view of concave face.
Aisoneofthe jaws, having transverse grooves to turn the points of the pins in or out; and A is the other jaw, having a raised tongue, which is formed by cutting away the top of the jaw to the proper width to fit between the pins of the ticket, and also cutting a slit under the front of this narrowed part, leaving a space to allow of the ticket being inserted thereunder.
B is the tongue or lip which holds the ticket in position preparatory to fastening to the; 5
cloth. This tongue is made of different widths, as shown, to suit tickets of different sizes.
D are grooves'for turning the points in on each other or out from the center, as desired. E are the handles; F, the ticket, and G the pins.
The operation of my device is as follows: The pin-ticket F is placed on jaw A, under the lip B, with the pins G on cit-her side of the tongue and opposite a groove for turning the points in or out, as desired. When thus placed, the nippers are ready for use, and the ticket is fastened to the goods by clasping the nippers on the goods and pressing the handles together. The pins perforate the goods, and are clinched on the under side in the curved grooves.
The double grooves are sometimes inclined from the center to the outside, instead of being concave.
W'hat I claim is 1. An improved device for attaching pintickets, having suitably-pivoted jaws, one of which is provided with an integral tongue, B, beneath which the ticket may be placed, all substantially as set forth and shown.
2. The combination, in an instrument for attaching pintickets, of thejaws A and A, one of which is provided with transverse grooves or depressions, and the other with an integral tongue, B, beneath which the ticket may be placed, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
AQUILLA J. PIATT.
