UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS WRIGrHI, OF SOUTH NORWICH, COUNTY OF OXFORD, ASSIGNOR TO THE OTTO SWEEPER COMPANY, (LIMITED) OF OTTERVILLE, ONTARIO,
CANADA.
COMBINED CAMP S PEGIFIGAJIION forming part of Letters -CHAIR AND CANE.
Patent No. 295,215, dated March 1c, 1884,
Application filed May 10, 1882. (No model.)
To all'whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS WRIGHT, of the township of South Norwich, in the county of Oxford, in the Province of Ontario, Domin- 5 ion of Canada, mechanic, have invented anew and useful invention to be known and described as Wrights Tourists Chair and Cane, the particulars of which are fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is aperspective view of my invention when being used as a chair. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same when being used as a cane. Fig. 3 is a side view of the central staff, showing the hinge for attaching the seat and the metallic clamp for attaching the movable legs, and Fig. 4 is one of the movable legs.
The object of'my invention is to furnish an article which shall be sufiiciently light that it can be carried in the hand and used as a walking-stick, and at the same time, when unfolded and placed in proper position, shall be sufficiently strong to be used as a chair or seat on which the tourist may sit down to rest. In the drawings, A is the central staff. B is the seat of the chair. 0 O are movable legs. D is the hinge or loop which secures the seat B to the central staff, A. E is a metallic clamp secured to the central staff, A, by means of riv- 0 ets or screws, to which the movable legs 0 O are loosely fastened or pivot-ed in such manner as that the ends of the legs will move freely in any direction required, said legs being also provided with pins or points at their upper 5 ends. F is a bow, whiclyanswers the double purpose of a back for the chair and a handle for the cane. When used as a cane, the seat B is folded up, so that its plane is parallel with the central staff, A, to which it is secured 0 by the hinge or loop D. The movable legs 0 G are turned on their pivots so as to be parallel with the central staff, A, and the plane of the seat 13, and are fastened to the central staff by a ring near the bottom.
\Vhen it is desirable to use my invention as a chair, the rings at the top and bottom are thrown off and the seat B is turned down until its plane is in a horizontal position, and the movable legs 0 O are turned on their pivots until the pins in the upper ends of them enter into holes made to receive them in the outer edge of the rim of the seat. In this position it becomes a strong trestle or crosslegged stool, while the handle F and upper part of the central staff, A, form a back to the seat. My invention may be made of any suitable material and in any style of art, either plain and simple or rich and elaborately finished.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,- and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- THOMAS "WRIGHT.
