SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,823, dated March 11, 1884.

- following to be a full, clear, and enact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention is an improvement on that set forth in the Patent No. 265,890 heretofore granted us, and has special reference to farmgates of that class which, by means of trip device and weight, open and shut by gravity; and the objects of our invention are, first, to construct such a gate as will open or shut with any desired speed by means of perfectly adjustable upper hinges; second, to construct such a gate as will open or shut with certainty by means of an adjustable trip device and weight; third, to construct such a gate as will remain open with certainty and remain shut with perfect security by means of latch devices, to be hereinafter described; fourth, such a gate, though remaining shut with security, to be opened by a footman or horseman with perfect ease and comfort, and the whole device to possess the qualities of neatness, strength, and durability. We obtain these objects by the mechanism and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a view of the gate swung open. Fig. II shows the trip device. Fig. III shows the double latch and stops on reverse side of post Z. Fig. IV represents a plan viewof the angle-plate construction. Fig. V is a vertical section on line 00 m, Fig. IV, showing also a detail view of the gravity-latch and lower hinge-arm. Fig. VI is a section of the upper hinge construction, taken at right angles to the post; and Fig. VII is a detailview of the hingebolt, coiled spring, and plate.

D by means of screws and horizontal slots 8, which permit said support or arm to be moved to the right or left if the gate should hang out of the desired vertical line. In Fig. I but one of these slots is seen, the other being covered by hinge II. On its upper projecting surface are laterally-groovedj oints, and to it is secured, by means of slotted eye and bolt, pivotal hinge d, provided on its under surface with like laterally-grooved joints to fit those in hingesupport D. I Hinge-support D is also provided in its projecting surface with along slot to receive the bolt passed through it and pivotal hinge d. Pivotal hinge d is also provided on "its upper surface with a pintle, b, and collar 1), to which is journaled a i'-shaped hinge, H, attached to the gate by two vertical slots, 8, and screws, so that the distance between the hinge and the angle-plate may be increased or lessened without disturbing the other parts of the hinge. (See Figs. I and VI.) The hole to receive pintle I) in hinge H is so enlarged as to allow the desired inclination or fall of the gate in opening and shutting. The construction of this hinge device allows a lateral shifting of the gate on hinge-post A, a forward and backward shifting, and also a raising or lowering of the gate on its hinges, thus forming a'perfectly adj ustable hinge-construction. By increasing the distance between the upper and lower hinge devices the gate willswing open slower. By decreasing the same it swings faster. Also, if the post A be up-' right, by removing the plate (Z on the support D toward said post, the latch end of the gate will be raised and the gate will swing open faster, but close slower. It is especially desired to again call attention to the fact, however, that -the increase and decrease of the speed of opening the gate may be controlled by the vertical slots and screws alone without disturbing the other parts of the hinge-a matter of great importance in large and heavy gates. w
B is the angle-plate, firmly secured to the lower side of post A. This angle-plate is formed with the angular slot 0, the apex of which is arranged in a line with the middle point of the lateral distance of hinge D, being provided within the same and around its entire length with an endless track, 0, (see Fig. IV,) to receive a loose collar or wheel, 71, j ournaled about hinge-bar extension or arm of hinge F, and working beneath a stationary collar or shoulder cast on the same. The outer walls or portions of angle-slot c are cut at points 0 e, for the purpose of affording rests or seats for the gravity-latch when thrown into different positions as the gate is opened or shut. This angle-plate I3 is formed or provided with the lump or knob C on the upper front space between the arms of the angular slot, substantially as shown in Figs. I and IV of the drawings. Hinge-arm F is provided with collar 71 to afford protection from rain and snow to journal bearings beneath. The object of the whole construction of this part is that when the trip is pressed toward the gate when shut the lower part of the hinge-bar is drawn toward the trip, and thelatch working on top of the knob will drop down and hold the gate until it is over half-wayopened,when the latch. begins to rise over the knob and swings thegate clear open. It also affords a means for sustaining the gate in any desired position, and the track and wheel in the slot lessen the friction in opening and shuitingthe gate.
F is the lower gate-hinge, provided with an extended arm longer than hinge II also having shoulder and bar extension downward through slot 0. On the lower end of this barextension is arranged an anti-friction washer,

above this washer are attached the trip-rods, extending to the trips 1'. The adjustable "lllHgCS above and hingcarm F are so 'con structed relatively that the post of the gate shall always be perpendicular.
G is the gravity-latch, journaled about the hinge-arm of the lower gate-hinge, and extending therefrom in a line, or nearly so, with the lower rail of the gate. The latch is provided with a slot in the free end, in which works freely a bolt, r provided with stationary heads beneath bar G and the rail of the gate, and a nut and thread-screw above the rail, fastening the same securely to the lower rail of gate.
'13 represents the adjustable connecting means attached to the lower end of bar-extension and extending to and connecting with the trip.
In Fig. ]I we have the trip device, consisting of rod E, stirrup X, connecting link and hook O, lever-bar 5, with side extension-pins j ournaled to the beam in the ground, doubleslotted bar 1', lever J, tripf, also weight IV on arm M, journaled to the beam in the ground, connecting-hook L and lever K,attached to the end of trip-barf. Said hook L serves merely to connect the weighted arm, with lever K, attached to the wheel-iron bar. In Fig. I the hook or link is hidden; but in Fig. II it is mostlyin view. The rod E is provided on its free end with screw threads, and passes through the end of stirrup X, provided with screw-threads to receive the same. The outer end of stirrup N is attached to bar 5 bya e011- necting link or hook, O, in such a manner that the same may be unhooked and rods E shortened and lengthened, according to the distance between the trip and hinge-bar extension when setting the deviees, or at any time thereafter. The double-slotted bar i, on which is jointed lever J, attached to trip f, and the hook or rod L, attached to arm M at one end, and to lever K or trip-bar at the other end, may be of equal lengths, measuring from extreme end of slot in lever '1', and both serve in opening or shutting the gate, the one to pull rod E and the other at the same time to lift weight \V until the gate is latched, when weight \V falls and replaces trip-bar f. In this device, either in shutting or opening the gate, the weight is always pulled up by the same power that opens the gate at trip f.
The letter V represents a slotted latch bar or rod, passing through ametal plate secured on the inside of the front end of the gate and provided with extended arms y. On the outside of the front edge of the gate is shoulderplate 0:, through which also passes rod V, which in turn is provided with a coiled spiral spring confined between the inside and outside metal plates on rod Y.
X represents a lever of elbow shape, journaled between extended arms 7 as afulcrum. One end of this lever passes through the slot in red V, the other end being free. Rod 7 passing through the top rail of the gate, rests on the upper end of the lever X,
The action of this latch device is as follows: hen the gate opens, the end of rod V passes over the angle-surface S on plate 1%, which presses back the rod and spring, and is immediately released and confined behind projecting surface 1-. The gate is then open and latched, and the vehicle passes through and over the reverse trip device, when rod V at the end, the gate being raised, follows the surface T, leaves post 6, and, shutting, passes under the lip I on post Z. Its shoulder a rests on plate-surface Q. and the end of rodV is confined between lips]? 1. Being shut, the gate cannot be opened by hogs, sheep, or other cattle by raising the gate, as the-end of rod V, pressing against movable lips I 1 causes the upper points of the same to follow in the dotted lines 3 1 and 3 1, meeting the projecting pins 1 1, and the end of rod V is confined in'the latch device by the proj eeting surfaces 2 2. .Although shut as to eattle or other stock a footman or horseman by pressing down 'on rod 7 releases rod V from the latch device, and the gate opens the spiral spring, replaces rod V, and the gate falls shut again. of the gate on collar n when closed. Post 7 has a like contrivance as to latch, as post 6. The gate always opens away from the team passing through by the construction heretofore described.
We claim the right to vary the construction of our improvements without departing from the spirit of our invention.
We are aware that it is not new to provide Plate Q also sustains the weight' IIO toothed meeting-plates in a hingedevice, so
that there may be lateral or transverse extension, and we do not claim this, broadly. The hinge referred to is not adjustably fastened to the gate, (though it has horizontal adjustment on the stationary post;) hence could not regulate the speed of the gate in the way ours does without being taken off and fastened in a new position.
We are aware that it is not new to retract the wheel-iron by a weighted arm, and claim only our specific construction.
\Ve are aware that a gate-latch similar to ours is not broadly new, and only claim it in combination with a peculiar latch-stop.
We also are aware that a double-latch'stop has been made like ours, but it does not have the uppermost latch-confining studs; hence does not prevent swine, 850., from lifting the gate out of its fastening, as there is nothing to stop the latch after it leaves the sides of the lips.
Having sufficiently described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a swinging gate, the hinge device composed of the arm D, having horizontal slots 8 in the post-plate, and a toothed upper surface, the plate cl, toothed on its lower surface, and
provided with a fixed collar and pint-1e, b b,
and the arm H, provided at one end with a circular opening somewhat larger than thepintle, and at the other with a right-angled plate having vertical slots 8, combined with the post A and the gate, as set forth.
2.- An angle-plate adapted to be fastened to the hinge-post, and having an angular slot, 0, provided with an endless track, a, in combination with the extension F of the lower gatehinge and the gravity-latch, the extension having a loose collar or wheel,.7z, adapted to play in said endless track, as set forth.
o. A gravity-latch formed of a lever journaled about the extension of the lower gatehinge, and pivotally attached to the under bar of the gate by a bolt having a fixed head below the latch, said bolt being adjustable by a screwthread and nut above, as set forth.
4. In combination with a swinging gate, the" trip device composed of the adjustable pullrod, stirrup, detachable link, lever-bar journaled to the studs of the ground-beam, doubleing-studs -2 2, combined with the post Z and the gate, as set forth.
7. The combination of the latch composed of the vertical handle 3 elbow-lever X, and fastening-bolt V, the latter partly enveloped by aspiralactuating-sprin gand shoulder-plate, n, with the double-latch stop composed of the guide and rest plate Q, moving lips P 1?, stop: pins 1 1, and confining-studs 2 2, as set forth.
8. The combination of the latch composed of the vertical handle y, elbow-lever X, and fastening-bolt V, the latter partly surrounded by the spiral actuating-spring and shoulderplaten, withthe single-latch stop composed of the incline S and the U shaped supporting and confining recess, as set forth.
