7 Claims. (Cl. 25664) This invention relates generally to a highway barricade,
and more specifically to a highway barricade of the fold- I a ricade which may be quickly and easily folded into a storage or transportation position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a highway barricade which is of sturdy construction; and which may be locked in an open or a closed position,
A still further object of :this invention is to provid a highway barricade having legs which are slidably and pivotally connected by a new and novel type of twoheaded screw .to be used in connection therewith.
A further object is to provide a'barricade having springs for holding the legs in place which may hold the legs even though the two-headed screw should be removed, as would occur if the slots in the legs became clogged. 1
\ A still further object of this invention is to provide a device which is simple and inexpensive, yet exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken longitudinally through the highway barricade, parts being broken away;
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view similar to Figure 5 but illustrating the legs in the folded position, and with the clamp in its retaining position of Figure 7;
Figure 7 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially along the plane defined by reference line 7-7 of Figure 6, illustrating details of construction thereover; and
Figure 8 is a vertical sectional detail view taken substantially along the plane defined by reference line 8-8 of Figure 5.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 generally designates the highway barricade comprising the present invention. This barricade consists of a channel member 12, having a bight portion 14, and downwardly and outwardly inclined sides 16 and 18.
Inclined sides 16 and 18 have openings 20 formed in the lower corners thereof for a purpose which will be described below. Bight portion 14 has square shaped openings 22 formed therein for the reception of lights or other such ornaments as may be desired.
This device further consists of end portions 24 mounted inwardly of the ends of the channel member. Reinforcing plate members 26 are connected diagonally between the sides 16 and 18 and ends 24. In the enclosure formed thereby are mounted springs 28 with the upper ends 25 for a purpose to be described below.
'Located inwardly of the sides 16 and 18 are strap members 30 and 32 which support a transverse support 34 which in turn supports a generally W-shaped clamp 36 pivoted to the support 34, and has curved extremities to lock the legs resiliently in place when they are folded. This pivotal connection is completed by means of a bolt 38 which passes through correspondingly aligned openings in the midportions of support 34 andclamp 36.
In openings 26, are inserted double-headed screws 40 which have an outer head 42', an intennedia-tely-disposed inner head 44, and a nut 46 for the threaded end there-- --for, Angular or L-shaped legs 48 having slots 50 in 1; each end with a larger opening: 52 communicating there with, are locked to sides. 16and '18 slidingly, by means of respective heads 42 and 44 being located on either side of the slots- Thus, the legs are slidingly connected toithe channel member. Since all of these legs are necessarily connected in the same manner, they will all .be
slidably and ,pivotally connected to the channel member as described above. Thus, it may be seen that when the legs are attached by means of their slots 50 to the channel' member, they may be slidably inserted into a com.-' partment formed therefor by plates 26, ends 24 and corresponding sides 16 and 18. The upper ends of legs 48 are so disposed in the housing that the springs 28 frict-ionally retain the legs therein, and since these legs are downwardly divergent, a stable support is provided for the channel member. Thus, it may be seen when all the legs are in this position a proper and stable barricade has been formed.
In the event that the slots become clogged and sliding of the leg on the two-headed screw 40 prevented, springs 28 are of such a construction and strength that the screw 40 may be removed and the legs 48 will be held in position solely by these springs.
Now, when it is necessary to remove this barricade and move it to another place, it is only necessary to slide the legs out of the housing provided therefor, and pivot these legs about the screws toward the channel member, so that they lie substantially .upon each other as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7. In this position, the clamp 36 may be used to yieldingly retain the legs in their folded position. It may be seen that the pivoted screw 40 is necessary for this device, in that it adapts the channel member to slidably and pivotally accommodate the legs therebled state.

Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact'construct-ion and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.

A highway barricade comprising a horizontal channelmember having downwardly directed sides, a plurality of legs detachably connected to said sides, means detachably securing each leg-to said channel member, said means comprising a two-headed fastener secured to one of said sides,ieach leg having an'elongated slot therein f adjacent itsuppe'r endfwith the lower end of said slot being laterally enlarged to permit passageof said 1' tenertherethrough, saidfastener' being slidablydisposjed in said slotwith .the sides of said leg being slidably re- Y tained between the heads of said fastener, a support strap extendingltransversely between said sides and {secured thereto intermediate the endsof-the latter, a clamp "pivoted upon saidsupport strap :for engaging all of said legs 'inrthepivotally'doldecl positionof thelatter'and retaim ing the legs within the channel member;
means comprising a triangular pocket at each corner of said channel member betweeen said sides and each pocket receiving one leg, said channel having a transverse end plate extending between and secured to said sides, diagonal brace plates having one end of each secured to said end plate and the other end of each secured to a side, said end plate, diagonal vbrace plate and a side associated therewith defining each pocket, a spring disposed in said pocket and secured to said diagonal brace plate and engaging a leg whereby to yieldingly urge the latter into frictional engagement with both said side and to said end plate.

The combination of. claim 3: including twoheaded fasteners carried by said sides,'each' leg having an elongated slot slidably receiving said fastener whereby to enable sliding'movement of said leg for withdrawal of the latter from said pocket and pivotal movement of said leg about said fastener to a folded position beneath said channel member. 7
5. The combination of claim 1 wherein said channel member includes light emitting openings in its bight portion.

The combination of claim 3 wherein each leg has an elongated slot therein adjacent its upper end. with the lower end of said slot being laterally enlarged to permit passage of said fastener :therethrough, said fastener being slidably disposed said slot with the sides of said leg being slidably retained between the heads of 'said fastener, a support strap eatending transversely beposition "of the latter and=retaining thelegs within the j channel member.
7. The'combination of claim 6 including light emitting openingsin the bight portion of said channel member;
