Description

June 28, .1960 v. T. MAN/xs 2,942,277
CARRIER AND ADAPTER Filed Sept. 11, 1957 I l i INVENTOR.
VINCENT 7'. IVIANAS www Mm ATTORNEYS l2,942,277 CARRIER AND ADAPTER arent Vincent Thomas Manas, Washington, D.C., assignor to Josam Manufacturing Co., Michigan City, Ind., a cor. poration of Delaware This invention is directed to the art of so-called wall hung closet fittings in the 'general art of plumbinginstallations and has for its general object the provision of an adapter means attachable to a carrier structure for connecting fixtures with relatively high llanges to carriers generally adaptable to the support of wall hung closet bowls ofboth blow out and syphon jet type.
The specific object of theinvention is to provide a combined carrier and adapter, the carrier being of the closet bowl supporting type whereby the same may be adapted to the support of urinals of womans type either at the time of installation of the carrier or after the carrier has been built into the building structure.
Aninstance of the use of the invention to great advantage is to be found in conversion jobs where installed closet bowls are replaced with womens urinals without tearing down the carrier and plumbing installations. The urinals in structure extend higher on the wall than the closet bowls necessitating the use of fixture supporting bolts disposed above the carrier structure. The present invention proposes the use of an adapter which when applied to the carrier will extend vertically the fixture supporting function of the carrier.
In my application iiled October 30, 1956, Serial No. 619,215 I disclosed a universal carrier adaptable to both syphon jet type and blow out type of closet bowl supports by vertically reversing the carrier and it is to such a carrier I have combined the adapter feature for meeting y the conversion requirements herein above referred to in supporting womens urinals.
In the drawings in Fig. 1 I show an exploded perspective view of the carrier and adapter Vwhen the carrier shown to be vertically adjustably mounted in the adapter slots 17. Lower bolt rods 27, as shown in Fig, 3, are threaded through threaded apertures (designated 25a in Fig. 1) and locked by jam nuts on the respective rod ends projecting behind the carrier plate, for support of a fourbolt mounted type fixture.
The adapter web 19 has two openings 21 which match or align with the threaded openings 13 and 13a depending upon the position of the carrier for either syphon jet type or blow out type of installation. Cap screws 22 extend through the adapter openings Z1 into engagement with the threaded openings 13 or 13a as the case may be with either installation. The web 19 is offset to extend in thickness rearwardly of the boss formations 16 to obtain sectional strength in the bridging function of the web and to form a recess inthe adapter structure whereby the adapter may be disposed in capping relation to the carrier top and the Ifront face of the adapter will be disposed substantially flush with the forward face of the carrier plate thus retaining the advantages of a relatively thin carrier plate.
On original installations, be they syphon jet type or blow out type, the same carrier structure is used by vertically reversing the carrier and three bolt and four bolt mountings of the fixtures are afforded as explained in said application. Should the installations include womens urinals the carrier may be used in'either vertical position since the adapter is'devised in such manner as to crown fit either end of the carrier plate whichever end happens to be disposed at the top of the carrier. The extension element or adapter is substantially the thickness of the carrier plate 10 except rib 19 which projects rearwardly somewhat to obtain strength in the structure. The slotted bosses 16 have the vertically extending slots 17 thereof in vertical alignment with the bolt openings 25' of the carrier since it is found that the manufacturers of womens urinals have adapted a standard horizontal spacing of the has been installed for support of a syphon jet type of closet bowl;
Fig. 2 shows the adapter element in perspective cross with the adapter in place.
The present invention contemplates vthe use of an adapter for converting a universal closet bowl carrier into a urinal carrier during original plumbing installations or during a change-over from closet bowls to urinals. In the drawings l show in Fig. 1 a vertically reversible carrier member 10 having an adjustable foot structure 12 bolted to the bottom of the carrier by cap screws 14 in threaded openings 13 located near the bottom of the carrier. Near the top of the carrier are bolt holes 13a which serve the same purpose as the threaded openings 13 when the carrier member 10 is vertically reversed. An adapter member 15 in the form of a yoke with twospaced outer bosses 16 having vertically extending slots 17 are connected byan integral bridging portion 18 and a lower web 19. 'I'he rear side of the carrier 10 is flat and the Web 19 is flat and disposed at the rear of the adapter whereby the adapter may nest upon the portions 20 of the carrier.
Two bolt rods 26 with associated nuts and washers are bolt openings in the fixtures.
Should the plumbing installation already exist and a change over is desired the carrier and plumbing can remain intact by extending the carrier function with the adapter bolted to the top of the carrier plate.
I claim:
l. A carrier and adapter for the purposes described comprising a carrier in the form of a plate having elongated openings for the reception of bolts adapted to support a toilet bowl fixture, an adapter plate shaped to tit the top of and overhang sides of the carrier plate, said t being in the form of an open face socket fitting the top end surface of the plate and the upper rear face of the plate, boss formations on the adapter overhanging the sides of the top of the carrier plate, said carrier plate and said adapter bosses having vertically extending bolt receiving slots in vertical alignment when the adapter is in position on the top of the plate and said socket formation of the adapter including a rear depending wall extending between the boss formations of the adapter and bolt means passing through the wall and securing the said depending wall to the carrier plate.
2. A carrier and adapter for the purposes described comprising a carrier in the form of a plate having elongated openings for the reception of bolts adapted to support a toilet bowl fixture, an'adapter plate shaped to it the top of the carrier plate and extend vertically the fixture supporting function, said fit being in the form of an open socket fitting the top end surface of the plate and the upper rear face of the plate, boss formations on the adapter overhanging the sides of the top of the carrier plate, said adapter bosses having vertically extending bolt receiving slots in vertical alignment with elongated openings of the carrier plate when the adapter is in position on the top of the plate and said socket formation of the adapter including a rear depending wall extending between the boss formations of the adapter and bolt means securing the said depending wall to the carrier plate whereby a xture may be supported on 'the carrier plate and the adapter.
3. A carrier and adapter for `the purposes described comprising a carrier in the form of 5a plate having elcngated openings for the reception of bolts "adapted -to :support a toilet bowl xture, said carrier plate being fvertically reversable for supporting either va syphon jet or a blow out type toilet bowl lixture, adapter plate shaped to lit the top of the carrier plate and being of ysubstantially the same thickness as the plate said t being in the form of a socket fitting Vthe top end 'surface of the plate and the upper rear face of the plate, boss formations on the adapter overhanging the sides of thev top yof the Vcarrier plate, vsaid carrier plate Aand said adapter bosses having vertically extending bolt receiving slots in vertical `alignment when the adapter 'is in position 4on the top of the plate and bolt means securing the said adapter to the carrier plate.
4. A carrier and adapter -for the purposes described comprising a carrier in the form of a plate adapted to support a toilet bowl xture, said carrier plate being vertically reversible for supporting either a syphon jet or blow out type of toilet bowl fixture an adapter plate shaped to tit the top of the carrier plate to vertically extend the fixture supporting function lof the carrier plate, bossformations on the adapter plate overhanging the side edges-o the top of the carrier plate, said carrier plate and said adapter plate bosses having vertically vextending bolt receiving slots in vertical alignment when the adapter plate is in position on'the top 'of the A'carrier plate and bolt means accessible from kthe `real: of the adapter plate for securing the said adapter plate to the carrier plate.
