FENCE.
N0. 293,547. Patented Feb. 12, 1884.
ATTORNEYS.
U I ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NnLsoN wnnrs AND WILLIAM SPIOER, or MENDON, 01110..
FENCE.
I SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 293,547, dated February 12, 1884.
Application filed September 7, 1883. (No model) To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, NELsoN WERTS and WILLIAM SPIOER, citizens of the United- States, andresidents of Mendon, in the county of Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of onepanel of our improved portable fence. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through one of the fence-posts or uprights.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to portable fences; and it consists in the improved construction of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In th e accompanying drawings we have sh own our invention as applied to a board or plank fence; but it may b e applied equally as well in the construction of a rail-fence. will be seen that the fence is constructed in panels, which are supported upon parallel bottom sills, A, of suitable length, three of these sills being shown in the drawings. bottom plank or rail of the fence B is placed edgewise across the middle of the sills, between uprights G and D. These uprights are tied together, and are fastened in pairs midway upon the sills Aby wire ties E, the ends of each tie being twisted together to form a knot, F, within a recess, G, made in the bottom of the sill, as will appear more clearly by reference to the sectional view, Fig. 3, of the drawings.
The fence boards or planks H are clamped I From this it The just above the topplank for the insertion of the W Wire tie E, so that when the free ends of this tie are twisted to form the knot F on the under side of the supporting-sills the tie will operate not only to bind the uprights O and D together, but also to hold the top rail, spacing-blocks,
and the planks or rails which intervene between the top plank and the sills firmly in their proper position. Each fence-panel is further supported or strengthened by braces K, the upper ends of which are secured to the posts 0 D by wire ties L, while their lower ends. are stepped into mortises M, cut in the outer ends of the sills. In this manner we construct a portable fence of great strength and durability, which can readily be moved from place to place when desired, and in the construction of which we save time, labor, and material, as compared with the construction of other portable fences of equal strength and durability with which we are acquainted.
Having thus described our' invention, we
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a portable fence, of the bottom'sills, A, recessed on the under side, posts consisting of the uprights O and D, vertical wire ties E, connecting said uprights, and twisted to form a knot, F, in the recessed sills, planks or rails B H, spacing-blocks I, braces K, and wire ties L, constructed and combined to form a portable fence-panel, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
NELSON WERTS. WILLIAM SPIOER.
Witnesses:
W'I LIAM WERTS, ALBERT N. WERTS.
