8 Claims. (Cl. 101-375) printing cylinders, and more particularly to the structure of the cylinder and its shafting and bearing supports.
The width of rotary intaglio printing presses is restricted by a tendency toward deflection of the cylinders and particularly the printing cylinder. As the width of the press is increased, the length of unsupported cylinder between bearings also increases, creating an in creased tendency toward deflection which cannot as a practical matter be compensated by strengthening cylinders constructed along conventional lines due to difliculty in handling cylinders of excessive weight. It, therefore, becomes desirable to provide a cylinder having maximum strength or resistance to deflection for given weight or cross section of metal within a given diameter. Cylinder constructions involving the use of a tubular cylinder element with internal reinforcing structures of various types have been proposed (as, for example, in United States Patents Nos. 2,025,746 and 2,048,005), but these structures have been found to be limited in their etfec tivness.
It is an object of the invention to provide a gravure cylinder construction having reduced deflection for given weight or cross sectional area of metal employed in a cylinder for given over all dimensions.
A second object of the invention is to provide a cylinder capable of satisfactory service when made in a greater length than now customary.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cylinder having internal bearing elements, whereby the distance between bearing supports is reduced and the central deflection is thereby reduced.
A cylinder embodying the invention in a preferred form will now first be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, and the features forming the invention will then be pointed out in the appended claims.

The cylinder, indicated generally at '1, is carried in press frames 2 and rotates in an ink fountain 3, as usual. It will be understood that suitable inking means, doctor mechanism and impression roller mechanism are provided, as well as drive mechanisms for the cylinder. Since these elements form no part of the present invention, they are not shown or described herein.
The cylinder comprises a tubular shell 4, which may be prepared for printing in any usual way, as, for example, by plating with copper and chemically etching the copper surface. This shell is fixed to and supported by a central shaft 5 by means of radially extending supports, which preferably take the form of discs 6 welded to the shell 4, as at 7, and to the shaft 5, as indicated at 8.
A double bearing system is provided for the shaft 5, comprising an inner bearing 9 and outer bearing 10 ice . 2 v at each end of the shaft. The inner bearing 9, which preferably is a radial bearing only, comprises an inner race 11 carried on a reduced section 12 of the shaft 5,
and butting against a shoulder 13 thereon, rollers 14 and outer race 15. The outer race. 15 is carried in a tapered tubular bracket element 16, fitting in a bore 17 therein and butting against a shoulder 18 at the end of the bore 17. A ring 19 fixed to the end of element 16 carries a flexible oil sealing element 20 cooperating with the inner race 11 adjacent shoulder 13. The outer end 21 of tubular element 16 fits in a bore 22 formed in the frame 2, and bearing cap 23 may be secured in place by means of a flange 24 and bolts 25, or other retaining means.
Member 16 has a bore 26 receiving the bearing 10,
.which is a thrust bearing as well as radial bearing, the,
outer race 27 of this bearing fitting against a shoulder 28 and being held in place by an annular'cover plate 29 attached to the member 16 as by bolts 30. Cover plate 29 fits around the reduced end 31 of shaft 5 and has grooves holding packing rings 32 for sealing to the shaft.
The end 'of the cylinder shell 4 fits around the mem ber'16 and carries flexible sealing member. 33 supported on an annular member 34 which is attached to the shell 4 -by screws 35. Sealing member SS-e'ngages a cylin ders heretofore used, which have been about 76" long.
The discs 6 may be spaced about 20" in from the ends of shell 4 and there may be additional discs 6 between the two shown, as required. In this way, cylinders accommodating five and six page widths, or even more, as opposed to the four or five accommodated by present cylinders, may readily be made.
What is claimed is:
1. In a rotary intaglio printing machine, and in combination, press frames, hollow bracket members supported in the frames and extending inwardly therefrom, bearings within the bracket members in substantial alignment with said frames, a cylinder having a shaft journaled in the said bearings and open spaces at its ends between it and the said shaft receiving the said bracket members, bearings within the said open spaces supporting the said cylinder from the said bracket members, and means fastening the said bracket members to the frames against rotation about the cylinder axis and against tilting movement in the axial plane of the cylinder.
2. In a rotary intaglio printing machine, and in combination, press frames, hollow bracket members supported in the frames and extending inwardly therefrom, bearings within the bracket members in substantial alignment with said frames, a cylinder having a shaft journaled in the said bearings and open spaces at its ends between it and the said shaft receiving the said bracket members, bearings carried by the said brackets within the said open spaces supporting the said cylinder shaft from the said bracket members, and means fastening the said bracket members to the frames against rotation about the cylinder axis and against tilting movement in the axial plane of the cylinder.
