ARTIFICIAL LEG.
Patented Peb. 5,1884.l
No. 292,800.l

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH FURRER, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
.41 ARTIFICIAL LEG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. aeasoduated February 5, 1884.
Application filed July 14, 1882i. (Xo model.)
To @ZZ whom/Wit muy conce/vt.- v
Be it known that I, JosEPE FURREE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Limbs, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.-
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in articial limbs; andV it has for its object to provide means for making a perfectly fiexible connection between the limb and the foot at the ankle-joint; and with this in view my invention consists, essentially, in providing` the artificial foot with journals or supports, and the adjoining see tion of the limb with a cupshaped socket having a shaft adapted to fit and rockin the said journals. Springs are interposed between the foot and lugs extending forwardly and rearwardly from the socket, and a yielding brace is also connected, respectively, to the foot and the limbsocket, so as to additionally unite the parts together, all the peculiarities'of which will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and on which like reference-letters indicate correspon ding parts, Figure l is a vertical sectional view taken through the foot and the socket, showing the relative arrangement of the several devices;
and Fig. 2, an end elevation, looking from the back.
The letter A indicates the improved artiicial foot, the same beingconstructed, preferably, of wood, and at the heel it is provided' with a cushion or spring, a, the object of which is to soften the tread and prevent jarring. The rear portion of said foot is cut away, asindicated, and upon said portion is mounted and rigidly secured the journal-blocks B, the basepiece of which extends forwardly and rearwardly, and is provided with apertures for the passage of the screws or bolts C, which serve to fasten the base to the foot, the lower or under part of the latter being countersunk to receive the nuts on the bolt-s. The cushionspring ct is, by preference, secured to one of said nuts. To the heads of the bolts are secured the springs D, the function of which is to flexibly connect the foot and limb cup or socket E. The said socket is of cylindrical form, slightly'tapering, and is adapted to receive and connect with the lower end of the limb-section. At its lower extremity it is provided with a hub, e, projecting from which are studs or pintles F, which enter apertures in thejournal-blocks B, and oscillate therein during the act-of walking.
Extending forwardly and rearwardly from the socket E are lugs f, projecting from the under side of which are studs G, to which the upper ends of the springs D are secured. The forward side of the socket is provided with a vertical way, H, in which is adapted 'to slide the upper end of the curved spring I, the lower and forward end of which is secured to the foot at about the point of the instep. This spring is slotted at its upper portion, and is held in the way H by means of the plate-h, which fits over the same, and the screw g, having its point extended into the socket-wall.
It will thus be observed that a perfectly y exible union of the foot and limb is secured, and this with strength and simplicity.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an artificial limb, the combination, with the foot provided with the fixed base-piece and journal-blocks, and the cushion-spring, of the socket journaled to the blocks, the springs illterposed and secured between and to the foot and socket, and the curved slotted spring fastened to the foot and working and held in the way in the socket, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two' witnesses.
JOSEPH FURRER.
