Jan. 12, 1960 H. BECKER POCKET HAND STAMP 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 14, 1958 #A/Qy EEK ref? INVENTOR.
BY MW United States PatentO 2,920,559 rocker HAND STAMP Henry Becker, Los Angeles, Calif. Application April 14, 1958, Serial No. 728,294 7 Claims. or. 101-405 This invention relates to hand stamps and particularly a type of hand stamp which may be safely carried in pockets of clothing and may be readily opened for use.
Hand stamps in which the ink material is incorporated to provide a large number of impressions without the use of ink pads are well known. The present invention incorporates such a stamp in a unit which may be safely carried in the pockets of clothing and readily brought into use when needed. That is, the unit has a casing which protects the stamp from contamination and protects objects in the pockets of the clothing. Furthermore, a part of the unit is used when open as a handle for operating the stamp.
The principal object of the invention, therefore, is to facilitate the use of a portable or pocket hand stamp.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved portable or pocket hand stamp which may be safely carried in the pockets of clothing.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved hand stamp of the type having inking material incorporated therein and which may be safely carried in pockets of clothing.
A better understanding of this invention may be had from the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hand stamp embodying the invention and shown in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hand stamp of Fig. 1 in a partially open position.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hand stamp embodied in the invention in fully open position.
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a detail cross-sectional view taken along the line 66 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is a detail view showing another position of the stamp.
Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional end view showing the stamp in stamping position; and
Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view showing a detail of I the positional locking unit of the stamp.
Referring, now, to the drawings in which the same reference numerals indicate like elements, a rectangular stamp case or frame 5 has mounted therein a backing plate 6 and a stamp 7, the backing plate having ribbed members 10, 11, and 12. Pivoted for rotation on the frame 5 is a cover unit having an upper plate 15 with a slotted handle section 16 and oval ends 19 and 20, each end having rectangular projections 21 and 22, respectively, which will align with rectangular sections 25 and 26, respectively, of the stamp frame 5 when the unit is closed.
At the ends of the backing plate 6 are U-shaped sockets 28 and 29 in which are mounted shafts 31 and 32 in the form of a cross, as shown in Figs. 5, 8, and 9.
" ice shafts may be cylindrical but are in the form of a cross for ease of molding. Molded to the backing plate 6 are leaves 33 and 34 (see Fig. 9) which are flexible so that when the cover 15 is in closed position, the tension of the leaves 33 and 34 against the rectangular plate members 40 and 41 will hold the cover firmly in either closed or open positions.
To projections 36 on the lower portions of the ends of the'fr'ame 5 are molded studs 37 around which are springs 38, the other end of the springs abutting the under surface of the sockets 28 and 29. Thus, to operate the portable unit just described, it is only necessary to rotate the cover 15 one hundred and eighty degrees on the frame 5 to the position shown in Fig. 3. When this is accomplished, the stamp is then operable by grasping the handle 16 and pressing downwardly, which will press the backing plate 6 and stamp 7 'down- Wardly to impression position, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The end openings in the frame 5 permit the stamp to be lowered. Upon release of the impression pressure, the springs 38 will return the handle to the position shown in Figs. 4 and S.
The above construction thus permits the carrying of an ink impregnated stamp safely within a clothing pocket without contamination of the stamp or damage to the clothing, the stamp being made rapidly ready for use.
I claim:
1. A pocket hand stamp comprising a frame having an opening in the bottom thereof, the portions around said opening being adapted to contact material to be stamped, said frame also having vertically disposed openings at the ends thereof, a vertically adjustable plate within said frame, a stamp mounted on said plate, a cover for enclosing said stamp in one position of said cover and for exposing said stamp and providing a handle for said stamp in another position of said cover, and means actuated by movement of said cover and positioned between the lower portion of said frame and said plate for permitting said stamp to be moved by movement of said cover into impression position in said opening in the bottom of said frame, the openings at the ends of said frame accommodating the movement of said stamp to impression position.
2. A pocket hand stamp in accordance with claim 1 in which said last-mentioned means includes sockets at the ends of said plate, shafts mounted on said cover and positioned in said sockets, and resilient means between said sockets and the lower portions of said frame.
3. A pocket hand stamp in accordance with claim 2 in which said shafts have fiat plate members attached thereto, resilient leaf members being attached to said vertically adjustable plate and between which said flat plate members are positioned for maintaining said cover in stamp enclosing and stamp exposing positions.
4. A pocket hand stamp comprising a frame having a vertically adjustable stamp backing plate therein, a stamp attached to said backing plate, an opening being provided in the bottom of said frame to permit said stamp to be exposed therethrough, the portion of said frame surrounding said opening being adapted to contact material to be stamped, a curved cover member attached to said frame for enclosing said frame and said stamp and rotatable 180 degrees to expose said stamp and having a slotted portion to serve as a handle for said stamp, said cover member enclosing the ends of said frame, and resilient means between said backing plate and lower portions of said frame for permitting movement of said stamp into said bottom opening in said frame.
5. A pocket hand stamp in accordance with claim 4 in which said backing plate has bearing sockets at each end thereof and said cover member has shafts at each end thereof, said shafts being accommodated in said sockets, said cover member Jheing rotatable on said shafts in said sockets. J 1
6. A pocket hand stamp in accordance with claim '5 in which said shafts have flat plate members mounted on .said cover member and apair ,of resilient leaf members mounted on said frame on each side of said flat plate members ,for maintaining said cover member .in both closed and open positions. I
7. A pocket hand stamp in accordance with claim 6 in which said resilient means between said backing plate 4 and frame is a coil ,spring mounted on a stud at each end of and extending fromnthe lower portions of said frame.
