Description

(No Model.)
T. S. STEWART.
UAR DUMP-ER.
Patented Jan. 8, 1884.
' lnu nIu UNiTnn STATES THOMAS S. STEVART, OF SALTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-BUMPER.
SPECiFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,801, dated January 8, 1884.
' Application filed November 26, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ 111700772, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I THOMAS S. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saltsburg, in the county of Indiana and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Bumpers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of thisspeoification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a rear view of this, invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
This invention has relation to tilting or tipping platforms for dumping coal wagons or cars at coal-mines; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices,
, all as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims,
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a frame carrying the track-rails B and supported upon a shaft, 0, the ends or journals of which are seated in boxes D of the masonry. From the corners of the frame A extend downward the brace-rods E, the ends of which are secured together and provided with a strong loop or connection, F, having its plane at right angles to that of the shaft 0, and formed with a series of holding notches or bearings, g, in its horizontal portion h, for the purpose of providing for the adjustment of the counterbalancing-weight K, which is connected thereto by a chain or rod, Z. By adjusting the weight backward or forward, the platform is balanced with reference to a car of greater or less weight.
Secured to the ends of the shaft 0 are the segment gears M, which engage the strong gearwheels N on the operating-shaft P. A handrails. Then, the weight having been properly adjusted, the operating-shaft P is turned, causing the shaft 0 to turn with the platform and car, the weight K at the same time moving back in an arc-shaped path.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A tilting platform for coal wagons or cars, having the downwardly-extending bracerods securely connected at their lower ends, and carrying a counterbalancing-weight which moves in an arcshaped path, substantially as specified.
2. In a tilting platform, the combination, with downwardly-extending braces E and the loop-connection F, having the adjusting-bearings g, of the weight K and its connection Z, substantially as specified.
3. The tilting platform having a rock-shaft and downwardly-extending braces connected at their lower ends and carrying a weight, the segment-gear of the shaft, the gear-wheels engaging the same, and the operating-shaft, sub stantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS S. STEWART.
