(Cl. 222-43) This invention relates to machines for coloring paints such as disclosed in my copending application for patent Serial No. 637,286, liled January 30, 1957, now Patent No. 2,865,614, granted December 23, 1958.
Among the objects of the present invention it is aimed to provide an improved machine for and a method of coloring paints which consists in'isolating a predetermined quantity or amount of coloring matter and thereupon ejecting such isolated quantity into a predetermined quantity of white or base paint which permits replacing containers of coloring matter and containers of base paint with facility.
These and other features, capabilities, and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined, detailed description of one specific embodiment of the method of operation and of the machine illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmental plan view.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 showing communication effected between the isolating chamber and the basic paint container and communication between the isolating chamber and the container of coloring matter shut off or intercepted.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental section of the valve showing communication elected between the isolating chamber and the container of coloring matter and communication between the isolating chamber and the basic paint container shut off or intercepted.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental section of the valve showing the communication relationship illustrated in Fig. 2.

In the embodiment shown there is provided a frame having side bars 1 to which are connected the two cross brackets '2 and 3. The cross bracket 2 includes a bar 4 having a plurality of large openings 5 to slidably receive the plungers 6 and a plurality of smaller openings 7 to slidably receive the rods "8 pivotally connected to the arm 9 iixed on the valve cylinder or casing 10 r0- tatably mounted in the bracket 3.
From the bar -4 to the bracket 3 there extends the tube 11 forming the isolating chamber, the front end of which `tube 11 is secured to the rear face of the bracket 3 by a seal 12 such as cement, solder, or the like, and the rear end of which tube 1'1 extends through the auxiliary bar 13 secured to the front face of the bar ,4 with a recess in the bar 4 to receive a vinyl washer 14 to effect a huid-tight connection between the tube 11 and the bar 4 and also a fluid-tight fit with the plunger 6.
The plunger y6 is provided with a stop 15 to cooperate with the front face of the bar 16. The plungers 6 extend through the bar or abutment 16 as shown in Fig. 1. and are provided with handles 17 on their rear ends 2 for manipulation by the operator. To facilitate isolating various quantities of coloring matter into a chamber forming tube 11, the outer face of the plunger 6 slidably mounted in such tube 11, may be provided with markings, such as annular recesses such as the recesses 18, 19 and 20 corresponding as an instance to a half ounce, onequarter of an ounce, and to one-eighth of an ounce respectively. The full ounce position is determined when the stop 15 engages the front face of the bar 16, the half ounce position when the key 21 shown in Fig. 7 is inserted into the recess 18 and engages the front face of the bar 16, the one-quarter ounce position when the key 21 is inserted into the recess 20 and engages the front face of the bar 16. Obviously any number of recesses, more or less, than the recesses V18, 19 and 20 may be f provided to determine other fractional amounts' of isolated coloring matter.
i recesses 25, 'the end portions of which plate 24 at the recess 25 extend into the annular recess 26 formed in the valves 10. The end portions of the plate 23 extend beyond the openings 22 and rest on the lower face of the bracket 3. To form a stop for each valve '18, a pin 27 is provided extending from the valve 10 in the recess 26 in position to abut against the end portions of the plate 24 at the free ends of the recess 25. The valve 10 has a transversely extending straight opening 28 to register with the openings 29 and 30 in the bracket 3 in one position and another triangular opening 31 to register with the opening 32 in the bracket 3 and the opening 3'3 in the plate 23 in another position. The opening 30 is in communication with the enlarged opening 34 extending upwardly in the bracket 3 through the boss 35. The boss or nozzle 35 is conformed to receive the lower end of the tube 36 which is liexible as an instance, which tube 36 extends down from the lower end of a container 37 for coloring matter. The vertical extension of the opening 31 communicates with the opening 33 in the plate 23 when the valve 10 is in the position shown in Fig. 4 when thecommunication from the container 37 to the cylinder 11 is shut oi and the communication from the cylinder 11 via the passages 29, 28, 30 and 34 is effected to the basic or white paint container 38.
From the foregoing it will thus be seen that in the position of the second rod 8 shown in Fig. 1, see also the section in Fig. 3, that the coloring matter from the container 37- may be drawn into the cylinder or isolatv ing chamber y11, and in turn in the position o-f the first and third rods S of Fig. 1, see also Fig. 4, that the coloring matter isolated in the chamber 11 may then be ejected by the plunger 6 into the basic or white paint container Obviously a plurality of containers having diierent coloring matters may be connected to the several valves 10 and the container 38, Fig. 6, move from one valve 10 to the other if a mixture of coloring matters to be supplied to the paint in the container 38.
Obviously the openings 7 in said bar 4 provide suicient clearance for said rods 8 to facilitate angular movement of said rods 8 relative to said bar 4 when actuating said valves 10.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made to the details of construction in the machine and in the steps of the method without departing from the general scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
