W. H. GLENN.
FIRE'ESGAPE.
No. 291,33} 1 Patented Jan. 1, 1884.
f k V 12 vi a VNTOR:
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
\VIIlLIAM H. GLENN, 0F KIRKSVILLE, MISSOURI.
Fl RE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 291,333, dated January 1, 1884. Application filed June 1, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GLENN, of Kirksville, Adair county, Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to that class of fireescapes consisting of a fiexibleladder, on which persons can descend; and the object of my invention is to avoid the danger of persons falling from the ladder while descending.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is afront view of my improved fireescape. Fig. 2 is alongitudiual sectional elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. I
A sack or tube, A, is made of ropes, which are crossed and united at the crossings, the said sack being made of such length that it can reach to the ground. On the front side of the sack a flexible ladder, B, is secured, on which the persons can descend. The ladder can be permanently fixed to the sack, or can be made removable. The sack can be suspended from a frame, 0, at the top of the house, and in that case must be provided in its rear sidethat is, the side toward the Wal1with openings, through which persons can pass from the rooms into the sack; or, if desired, sacks can be contained in boxes D, fastened to the inner side of the'wall below the window-sills. In that case a separate sack is provided for each story. The sack can be suspendedfrom suitable hooks on the windowframe, or from a frame, C, at each story; or it can be suspended in any other suitable manpresence of mind. The sides of the sack can i be made of wire or fiber-ropes, and can be braced and stiffened by means of braces E, suitably spaced. At its upper end the sack is provided with blocks F, for suspending it. As the ladder does not rest against the wall, the persons can pass their feet through the spaces between the rings sufficiently to get a firm bearing on the rungs.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fire-escape sack formed of perpendicular ropes, and ropes crossing these obliquely, said ropes being tied together at their points of crossing, all substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a fire-escape sack having hooks at the rim of the upper end, of
a projecting frame, 0, arranged to hold the sides of the sack perpendicularly, as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the sack ortube A, made of ropes, of the hooks F and the ladder B, secured in the sack, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the pur poses set forth.
WILLIAM H. GLENN.
