S'Clalms. c1. 33-110) This invention relates to drawing instruments, such as used by draftsmen and particularly mechanical draftsmen where sections are taken through parts of machinery, and the like, and in particular a triangle having a slider therein and adjustable means for controlling the movement of the slider or triangle on the slider whereby with the triangle and slider retained in position with one hand a section line is drawn by a pen or pencil with the other and afterdescribing the line the slideris moved laterally with the triangle stationary andafter positioning the slider the triangle is moved thereon to provide a guide for the next section line.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a triangle for section lining wherein section lines of an area may be equally spaced.
Various types of devices have been used incombination with triangles to facilitate drawing section lines across areas, however, such devices interfere with positioning of the hands or fingers thereof in holding the pen or pencil and, consequently, devices of this type are very seldom used. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a section lining triangle having a section slidably mounted therein forming a slider, and a cam rotatably mounted in the triangle and positioned to coact with the slider to adjust the travel of the slider so that spacing between section lines is readily adjustable.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to incorporate spacing means in a section lining triangle whereby all parts of the device are incorporated within the thickness of the triangle and objectionable protruding parts are not required.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for incorporating a section lining element in a triangle wherein movement of the triangle is adjustable and wherein the thickness of the triangle is not increased.
A further object of the invention is to provide a section lining triangle in which all parts are incorporated within the limits of a conventional triangle and in which the triangle is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a triangle having openings therethrough, a slider mounted with tongue and groove elements in upper and lower edges thereof in an opening through the triangle and a disc having a cam surface thereon rotatably mounted in the triangle, also with tongue and groove joints, and positioned to be engaged by the slider to adjust the travel of the triangle on the slider.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved section lining triangle showing the triangle with the parts in position for use.
Figure 2 is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 with parts of the triangle broken away, illustrating a modification wherein a spring is provided for returning the slider or triangle.
Figure 3 is a cross section through a portion of the 2,910,776 Patented Nov. 3, 1959 triangle in which the cam is positioned taken. on line 33 of Fig. 1 and illustrating the mounting of the cam with the parts shown on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a cross section through one edge of the slider of the section lining triangle taken on line 4-4 of Fig. l, the parts being shown on an enlarged scale.
Referring now to the drawing wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved section lining triangle of this invention includes a triangularshaped body 10, a slider 11 mounted to slide in an opening 12 in the triangle and a cam 13 positioned in a circular opening 14 also extended through the body of the triangle and positioned to communicate with the opening 12 in which the slider 11 is positioned.
In the design shown, the sliding and adjusting elements are incorporated in a 45 degree triangle with a lower edge 15 of the opening 12 parallel to an edge 16 of the triangle and with an upper edge 17 0f the triangle parallel to the edge 15 of the opening and also parallel to the edge 16 of the base of the triangle.
The opening 12, through the body of the triangle, is formed with an inclined forward edge 18, spaced from the edge 19 that provides a guide for describing a line or the like, the inclined edge 18 extending from a point 2% to a point 21, at which point the edge 18 intersects the edge 17 and the upper edge of the opening 12. From the point 20 the lower edge 15 extends through a point 22. and from the point 22 the end of the opening slopes toward the opposite end thereof providing an inclined surface 23, the upper end of which terminates in the opening 14 with an arcuate surface 24.
The edge 15 of the opening 12 through the triangle is provided with a groove 25 into which a tongue 26 on the lower edge of the slider 11 extends and at the upper side of the opening 12 the body is provided with a groove 27 into which a tongue 28 on the upper edge of the slider 11 extends, as illustrated in Fig. 4. By this means the slider 11 is free to move longitudinally of the triangle 10 with the triangle positioned as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Clearance is provided at the sides of the tongue 28, as shown in Figure 4, to permit free movement of the slider 11.
The travel of the slider 11 is limited by the arcuate surface 29 of the cam 13 which extends from a radially disposed shoulder 30 to a point 31, at which point the cam surface blends into the peripheral edge of the disc 13. As illustrated in Fig. 3, the disc 13 is provided with a tongue 32 that extends into a continuous groove 33 in the body of the triangle whereby the disc is adapted to be rotated by hand to adjust the position of the cam surface 29 whereby the slider 11 is adapted to be moved to provide close or wide spacing of section lines, as may be desired.
The face of the triangle may be provided with graduations 34 by which the cam 13 may be set to exact dimensions to provide accurate spacing between the section lines.
In the design illustrated in Fig. 2 a slider 35, similar to the slider 11 is mounted in an opening 36 in a triangle 37 with the travel of the slider controlled by a cam surface 38 of a cam 39 and, in this design, a spring 40, mounted in the upper end 41 of a recess 42 in the body of the triangle extends into a notch 43 in the upper edge of the slider whereby upon describing a line with the guiding edge of the triangle the spring snaps the slider or triangle into the position for providing a guide for the next line.
The device is adapted to be used in triangles of different angles and the shape or form of the slider and cam may be varied as desired.
Although the device is shown and described as being a triangle, it may be of any other suitable shape.
It will be understood that other modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is:
1. In a section lining instrument, the combination which comprises a trangul'ar-shaped body having 'a base with extended end surfaces and having openings with grooved edges extended 'th'erethrough, a slider having tongues on edges thereof positioned with the tongues in meshing relation with grooves of the body and adapted to slide longitudinally of said body, 'a circular element having a cam surface thereon and having a tongue extended from the edge rotatably mounted in an opening in said body and positioned with the arcuate surface adapted to be engaged by the slider to adjust the travel of the slider in the body, said body having graduations thereon and said graduations being positioned to coact with a shoulder of the cam for accurately setting the cam, the side surfaces of the cam and slider being within the limits of the side surfaces of the body of the triangle.
2. In a section lining triangle, the combination which comprises a triangular-shaped body having a base with extended end surfaces and having openings with grooved edges extended therethrough, a slider having tongues on edges thereof positioned with the tongues in meshing relation with grooves of the body and adapted to slide longitudinally of said body, a circular element having the peripheral edge thereof providing a cam surface thereon and having a tongue extended from the peripheral edge thereof rotatably mounted in an opening in said body and positioned with the arcuate surface adapted to be engaged by the slider to adjust the travel of the slider in the body, and resilient means for returning the slider after each movement thereof, the side surfaces of the resilient means, cam and slider being positioned 3 within the limits of the side surfaces of the body of the -triangle.
3. In a section lining triangle, the combination which comprises a triangular-shaped body having a base with extended end surfaces and having openings with grooved edges extended therethrough, a slider having tongues on edges thereof positioned with the tongues in meshing relation with grooves of the body and adapted to slide longitudinally of said body, a circular element having a cam surface thereon and having a tongue extended from the edge :rotatably mounted in an opening in said body and positioned with the .arcuate surface adapted to be engaged by the slider to adjust the travel of the slider in the body, and a spring fixedly mounted in the body and extended into a slot in the slider for resiliently urging the slider against the arcuate surface of the cam, the side surfaces of the spring, cam, and slider being positioned within the limits of the side surfaces of the body of the triangle.
