MILLSTONE-DRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 291,010, dated December 25, 1883.
' Application filed June 2, 1883. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, LEsTEE B. WooLEvEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austinburg, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Millstone-Dress, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in millstonedress; and it has for its objects to increase the number of lands and the cutting lines or edges of the furrows,v and to increase the draft of the stone toward the skirt or outer edge of the stone, and thus enhance the grinding capacity of the same, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects I attain by a peculiar formation of thelands and furrows, as
indicated in the which- Figure l represents a view of the face of the upper stone or runner, showing the same partially dressed according to my invention; and Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same. Y The letter A indicates the millstone, the surface of which is formed with. a series of seetions or landings, B; The said sections are dressed, by means of a proper tool. in such accompanying drawings, in
' manner as to form a series of tangential lands,
D, and furrows E, the said lands and furrows being of exactly equal width, as indicated in thedrawings.
It will be perceived that by the improved dress true cutting-edges are formed, as indicated by the letter G, as above mentioned, and vby the general construction of the dress the capacity of the stone is increased and the grain is granulated and not crushed,` as in the old style of dressing, as it is run against the cutting-edges G, instead of over' them, thus re- 40' ducing theftendency to burn, and making a better grade of flour or meal than heretofore.
The lands and furro'ws being narrow,a greater number may be formed on the stone, and therefore more cutting lines or edges may be obtained, thus increasing the grinding capacity of the stone. Thelands and furrows being o f equal width, the draft is equal all over the stone at any given distance from the eye; also, there are more furrow-lines as the skirt is approached, which greatly increases the capacity of the stone. and as the dra-ft increases directly as the capacity of the stone, therefore the draft is increased toward the skirt.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The upper stone or runner, in turning, crowds the grain toward the skirt or outer edge-an operation technically-known as' the "draft of the stone. The grain is ground by being driven over or against the sharp edges made by cutting grooves or furrows in the stone. The more of these cutting-edges there are on the stone the greater its grinding capacity. Therefore, as there are more cutting-edges in my dress as the skirt is approached than inV the ordinary dress, the capacity of the stone is correspondingly increased.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
A millstone-dress having lands constructed with ilat horizontal faces and furrows formed of angular grooves, constituting a series of cutting-edges, increasing in number as they approach the skirt of the stone, the lands and furrows being of equal width from end toend, substantially as and for the purposes specified. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
