l' N cru-AY United States Patent z f POURING SPOU'I' FOR LIQUID CONTAINERS This invention relates to a pouring spout fora liquid container and, more specically, the instant invention pertains to a pouring spout for attachment to liquid containers.
One of the primary objects of this invention is to provide a pouring spout for attachment to liquid containers, the spout aifording a greater amount of hygienic protection during the dispensing of the liquid within the containers than heretofore known in this art.
A further object of this invention is to provide a pouring spout for liquid containers which may be readily attached to the containers and removed therefrom.
Another object of this invention is to provide an attachment for liquid containers, the attachment being formed of aplurality of laminated materials and including means for clamping over one of the flanged ends of the liquid container.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a liquid pouring spout for connection with liquid containers, the spout being non-complex in construction and assembly, inexpensive to manufacture, and durable in use.
Other and further objects and advantages of the instant invention will become more evident from a consideration of the following speciiication :when read in conjunction with the annexed drawing, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of a conventional liquid container together with a liquid pouring attachment constructed in accordance with this invention mounted thereon;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the container and attachment illustrated in Figure l;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail cross-sectional view taken substantially on the vertical plane of line 3--3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and,
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the liquid pouring spout per se.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, reference numeral designates, in general, a liquidv pouring spout attachment for liquid containers. As illustrated in the several figures, the attachment comprises a laminated article including an elongated substantially quadrilateral, relatively thin back member 11 formed of liquid impervious material, the back member including a pair of adjacent sides 1'2, 14 of substantially equal length and of a greater length than the adjacent sides 16, 18, the latter pair of sides Valso being of substantially equal length. The corners -ofthe back member are rounded as at 22, 24, 26 and ,'28, and the back member 11 is arcuately curved about its longitudinal axis.
A somewhat smaller liner or iiller 30l formed of cork or of other similar materials is secured to the back member 11 by conventional means and is substantially coextensive with that portion of the back member 11 forming a substantially spherical triangle having corners 24, 26'and 28.

As is clearly seenV in the drawing, the filler or 'liner 30 and the cover member 32 yall follow the contour of the back member 11. i
A conventional liquid container is designated, in general, by the reference numeral 34. As illustrated inthe drawing, the container 34 includes `a substantially cylindrical side wall 36 and an end wall 38. The end Wall 38 includes a lvertical flange 40 which is reverted at'42 over the upper end of the sidewall 36 in the conventional manner. v
To utilize the attachmentconstructed in accordance with the present invention let it be assumed that the user desires to dispense the liquid within the container 34. To this end, the end Wall 38 is punctured as at 42, 44 with the puncture 44 being of somewhat greater size than the puncture 42.
The attachment 10 is now applied to the container 34 by engaging the concave side of the back member 11 against the convex side of the container 34 and causing the convex side of the ange 32A to engage the concave side of the iiange 40 of the container. The flange 40 and its reverted end 42 are thus disposed within the groove 34 referred to supra. The puncture 44 is, of course, substantially aligned 'with the longitudinal axis of the back member 11.
It is common knowledge that most individuals in preparing to dispense liquids from containers frequently will clean the outerside of the end wall 38 of the container 34 and neglect entirely to clean dirt, dust and other debris from the ange 40 thereof. Through the utilization of this attachment this dirt, dust and other accumulations of foreign matter on the ange 40 will not be mixed with the liquid being dispensed. This affords a high degree of sanitation and the hygienic aspects thereof cannot be overly stressed.
The spout 10 may be constructed of relatively inexpensive material so that the same may be discarded with the container 34 when the latter is emptied of its contents. On the other hand, the spout 10 may be formed of durable materials and after usage may be cleaned and stored for subsequent utilization.
Having described and illustrated one embodiment of this invention in detail, it will be understood that the same is offered merely by way of example, and that the instant invention is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A pouring spout attachment for a liquid container having a punctured anged end wall and a cylindrical side Wall, said attachment-comprising a laminated element including a substantially quadrilateral back member formed of liquid impervious material, a riller member secured to said back member and extending across said back member from a corner thereof to one of its diagonals, a cover member extending across said iiller member and beyond said diagonal to form. a flange, said flange, the adjacent end of said filler member and said back member dening a substantially U-shaped groove therebetween adapted to receive portions of said flange of said end wall proximate said puncture with a portion of said back member engaging against said cylindrical side wall.
2. A pouring spout attachment for a liquid container having a punctured end wall including a concave-convex flange and a cylindrical side rwall, said attachment comprising a concave-convex back member having its concave side engaging the convex side of said cylindrical side wall and the convex side of said ilange, said back member having a portion thereof projecting beyond one side of said flange proximate said puncture, a liner extending across and secured to said projecting portion of said back member and having an end juxtaposed with respect to and confrontingsaid ange, a cover member secured to said liner and being-co-extensive therewith, said cover member having an arcuate flange engaging the concave side of said rst ilange, said back member ,and cover member being formed of liquid impervious materials, andsaid projecting portion of said back, said liner i0 and said cover member having a substantially spherical triangular conguration. l
3. A pouring spout attachment for a liquid container having a punctured end wall including a concave-convex ange and a cylindrical side wall, said attachment com- 15 cylindrical side wall and the convex side of said iiange, said back member having a portion thereof projecting beyond one side of said ange proximate said puncture, a liner extending across and ixedly secured to said projecting portion of said back member and having an end juxtaposed With respect to and in confronting relation relative to said ange, a cover member secured to said liner and being co-extensive therewith, said cover member having an arcuate flange engaging the concave side of said rst flange, said back member and said cover member being formed of impervious materials, and said projecting portion of said back member, said liner, and said cover member having a substantially spherical triangular coniiguration.
