PAPER-HANGERS ROLLER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,813, dated. December 25, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HORATIO SWEETSER, of the city, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Hangers Rollers; and the following is declared to be a full and exact description of the same.

Paper-hangers rollers usually consist of a handle to which is secured a wire bail or metal frame, between the ends of which is hung a wooden roller covered with felt or sheep-skin. These rollers are used to press the paper upon the wall and smooth it as it is hung.

My invention relates to rollers of this class; and the object of the same is to produce a superior articleone that can be adjusted for wear and can easily be taken apart and packed in a small space for transportation among the other tools of the workman.

I employ afelt-covered wooden roller, (preferably hollow.) The ends of this roller have upon their faces disks or plates of metal secured by nails or screws, and pointed adjustable screw-axles are inserted in the center of these plates for the axis of the roller. These screw-axles are clamped with a nut or screwplate. The metal frame for the roller is secured to the handle by a screw-rod passing through said handle one end of which rod is made as a ring for hanging up the roller, and said ring acts as a clamp to hold the handle and frame together when the parts are screwed to place. These rollers can. be easily and quickly taken apart and packed in a small space.

In the drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation of the roller complete. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the end of the roller and a vertical section through part of the handle.

The roller ais of wood, (preferably hollow,) and it is covered with felt of any desired thickness.

To each end of the roller is secured a disk or plate of metal, b, preferably by screws. The roller is supported or hung in the metal frame 0 by the adjustable screwaxles d d, which are carried in the plates b, and I provide clamping nuts or plates e 0 upon the axles d (1, so as to hold the axles securely in place after the roller is placed in the frame 0 and adjusted. The ends of the axles are pointed, so as to bear evenly and accurately in the depressions in the frame 0. The wooden handle f has a hole through its length for the screw-rod one end of which rod is made with a ring, 1, for hanging the roller upon a hook, when desired. The other end of the rod 5/ is made with a screw-thread, 2, for se curing the handle f and frame 0 together. The end of the handle f and the ferrule 3 upon the same are notched at 4for the reception of the frame 0, and the handle f is thus kept from turning upon the rodg, both when the parts are secured together and when the roller is in use.

I prefer to make a small hole in the screwaxles cl d, between the point and the nuts or plates 6 6, so that a nail or sharp instrument can be inserted to turn the axles in adjusting the same or when taking the roller out of the frame 0.

In my improved roller the adjustability of the screw-axlesdd allows any slack produced from wear to be taken up very quickly, and provides a means of keeping the roller steady yet free to turn.

I do not limit myself to the use of these improvements upon paper-hangers rollers alone, as there are other forms and kinds of rollers to which they are applicable.

I claim as my invention 1. In a paper-hangers roller, the combination, with a handle and frame for supporting the roller, of the roller (0, end plates, 1) 7), adjustable screw-axles cl d, and the nuts or plates 6 6 upon said axles, substantially as set forth.

2. In a paper-hangers roller, the combination, with a roller, its axles, and supportingframe,-of the handle f, screw-rod g, the loop or ring 1 upon the screw-rod, and notch at 4 upon the handle, substantially as set forth.

8. In a paper'hangers roller, the combination, with a roller, its axles, and support-ingframe, of a handle, and a screw-rod passing through the handle and securin g the same to the frame, as set forth.

4. A roller for paper-hangers use, composed of the roller a, disks 1) b, adjustable screwaxles d (1, nuts 6 6, frame 0, handle f, and screw-rod g, substantially as set forth.
