HAT AND. BONNET SUPPORTER.
No. 290,365. Patented Dec. 1-8, 1883.
INVENTOR.
WITNESSES MATTORNEYS.
FNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE.
HAT AND BONNET SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,365, dated December 18, 1883. 7
Application filedJuly28, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it 'known that I, MARGRET SMITH, a resident of Little Rock, Pulaski county, Ar? kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Bonnet Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my in vention as applied to a spring-band. Fig. 2 is a similar View of my invention as applied to a comb. Fig. 3 is a side view, partly in section, of one of the holding-prongs, showing its attachment'to the vase. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of a portion of a comb, showing the manner ofattaching the holding-prong.
My invention relates to devices for holding a hat or bonnet securely upon the head of the wearer; and the object of my inven tion is to provide a neat and efficient structure for the purpose, which shall serve in lieu of the bonnet-pins now in use for the purpose.
My invention consists in the provision of holding points, pins, or prongs secured to a band or comb, or other similar device, in such manner as to permit of being raised when in use and folded down upon their base when not in use, whereby, when not in use, such holders shall be concealed and symmetrical appearance of the band or comb unmarred, as hereinafter set forth.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a U-shaped band, of spring metal, designed to be placed upon t e ea e the ears, or behind them, or in other position diithe head, as desired.
A designates a U-shaped comb, like a childs comb. Upon the outer side of this band or comb I secure a number of teeth or prongs, a a a a" a as shown. Each of these prongs is formed with a cam-shaped or eccentric base, 6*, provided with a hole or eye extending transversely through it.
Upon the outer surface of the band or comb I form or attach for each prong two oppositely disposed lugs, 12, each of which is formed with an eye in its upper portion. The base of the prong is inserted between The comb used by me is preferably formed I with a shoulder, a upon its frontqvhich conceals the devices for attaching the prong, and also the prong itself. The plate may also be provided with a similar shoulder Y upon its front edge, if desired. I have shown five of these prongs mounted upon the plate and a like number upon the comb; but a greater or less number may be so mounted, and of the number provided in any instance all or only a portion may be used simultaneously. The two prongs a alone may be used effectively, or the middle prong, a, may be used with the prongs a, and so on, as de sired.
The bonnet or hat may be secured either by simply forcing the erect prongs into it or such prongs may be passed through the material of the bonnet and then bent down upon its outer side. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A band or comb provided with teeth, pivoted thereto in the manner described, whereby they may be set up or folded down, and will remain substantially rigid in either position, as set forth. 7/
2. The combination, with a band or comb carrying the lugs b, of the eocentrically-ended prongs a, secured between the lugs by the rivet or pin 11, said rivet passing through eyes in the upper parts of the lugs and eccentric part of the prong, as herein described, and for-the purposes stated.
In witness whereof I have signed my hand in the presence'of two witnesses.
MARGBET SMITH.
