3 Claims. (Cl. 22-1-260) flaps, a jacket encircling the wrapper, and a moistureproofing sealed sheath enveloping the jacket and covering the end closure flaps of the inner wrapper.

In accordance with our invention, the body of the inner wrapper has a tongue out therefrom and deflected into adhesive attachment with one of the packeted cigarettes. Preferably such tongue is integrally connected with and depends from an end closure flap of the inner wrapper and may be deflected against, and caused to adhere to, a cigarette by the insertion of a heated blade through a slit in the jacket which encircles the inner wrapper. The jacket and inner wrapper are enveloped by a sheath of cellophane (sheeted cellulose acetate) or other suitable material which is sealed to prevent ingress or egress of moisture through the jacket slit, through the tongue opening, or throughother openings or joints.

A top section of the sheath is connected by a flexible pull strip with the end closure flap from which the tongue depends. Stress transmitted through a detached sheath section to the pull strip unfolds such flap and the flap may then be used as a pull to lift the tongue and elevate the cigarette attached thereto.

The characteristics of our improved package, and the best mode which we have contemplated for producing the same, will more fully appear from the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.

In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan view of an unfolded inner wrapper of foil-covered paper having a tongue and edge slits crease cut therein in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is an unfolded jacket blank slit in accordance with our invention; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of a package embodying our invention and made from the wrapper shown in Fig. l, the jacket blank shown in Fig. 2, and a moisture-proofing sheath enveloping the jacket and inner wrapper; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary, sectional side elevation of the package shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a top plan of the package shown in Fig. 3 with parts of the enclosure torn away; Figs. 6 to 9 are fragmentary perspective views of the upper portion of the package shown in Fig. 3 showing various stages of the package opening operation; and Figs. 10 to 13 are fragmentary perspective views of the upper portion of the package shown in Fig. 3 showing various stages of the cigarette elevating operation.

In the embodiment of our invention illustrated in the drawings, a wrapper 1 is crush-cut along the lines 2, 3, 4 to form a tongue 5 in the body of the wrapper, and converging slits 6 and 7 are crush-cut inward from the upper edge of the Wrapper.

The wrapper is bent, preferably around a hollow mandrel, along parallel crease lines 8, 9, 10, and 11 and the lower portion is then tucked and folded along lines 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 to form the bottom end closure of a hollow shell.

A jacket blank 21 is provided with a slit 22 adapted to, be aligned with the tongue 5 by wrapping the jacket blank around the shell formed by the wrapper 1; the jacket blank being creased along the lines 23, 24, 25 and 26 and having its lateral edges overlapped and cemented to one another. The lower portion of the wrapper blank is tucked and folded along crease lines 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 and 35 to form overlying bottom flaps, some or all of which are cemented together to form a tight bottom. The jacket thus constructed encircles and holds together the shell formed by the inner blank 1 and forms therewith a soft pouch.

The pouch thus formed by the jacket and inner wrapper has an open mouth at its top and is filled with cigarettes 36, or similar rod-like articles. Preferably the cigarettes are arranged in three rows of which the center row is shorter than the outer rows. An end cigarette 36' of the central row is slideable in a slideway formed by cigarettes of the outer rows and is slightly spaced thereby from the proximal side wall of the inner wrapper.

After the pouch is filled with cigarettes, and while the portion of the inner wrapper 1 above the line 37 continues to project from the top of the jacket, a flexible pull strip 38 is peelably bonded to an extension section 39 of the wrapper above the tongue 5.

The extension sections 39 and 39 of the side walls formed by the wrapper are then simultaneously downfolded along the line 37 to form narrow closure flaps or tucks.

The back wall extensions 40 and 41 are then downfolded along the line 37 to form together a broad end closure flap, and the front wall extension 42 is then downfolded along the line 37 to form a broad closure flap. The downfolded flaps are held in downfolded position, without bonding to one another, by a stamp 43 which is adhesively attached to the outer surfaces of the front and back walls of the jacket and has a bight partially overlying the broad end closure flaps and at least partially overlying the slits 6 and 7 therein. The slits 6 and 7 preferably intersect one another and lie adjacent to the inner edge of the flap formed from the extension section 39.

The inner surface of the lower portion of the tongue 5 is coated with a thermo-plastic adhesive and may be pressed against the side of the cigarette 36' and caused to adhere thereto by a heated pressure blade (not shown) inserted through the slit 22 for a suflicient distance and for a suflicient time to effect the bonding of the tongue 5 to the cigarette 36'.

The pouch is then sheathed in a moisture-proofing sheath 44 of cellophane (sheeted cellulose acetate) or other moisture-proofing material, which is ditficult to tear and which envelopes the jacket and has end extensions downfolded to form end closure flaps 45, 46, 47 and 48 overlying similar flaps formed by the extensions 39, 39', 40, 41 and 42 of the inner wrapper.

During the application of the sheath, the flexible strip 38 is folded over on itself, partially overlies the flaps 40 and 42, and is bonded to the inner surface of the end closure flap 45 whose outer surface is bonded to the end closure flaps 47 and 48 of the sheath 44.

The flaps 47 and 48 contain a tear-initiating slit 49 which extends transversely of the flaps and has termini adjacent to the top edges of the front and back walls of the package.

The flaps 47 and 48 are bonded to one another and to the stamp 43 by a continuous thermo-plastic bond 50 surrounding the slit 49 and spaced therefrom sutficiently 3 to permit the insertion of a thumb nail in the slit to initiate tears in the sheath from the termini of the slit along the top edges of the package as shown in Fig. 6.

Stress applied to the torn out section of the sheath is transmitted through the pull strip 38 to the downfolded flap formed from the extension 39 and lifts the latter to withdraw the sections 40 and 42' of the end sections 40 and 42 from under the edge of the stamp as shown in Fig. 7. Continued stress effects further unfolding of the members 39, 40' and 42', as shown in Fig. 8, and the detachment of the peelable strip 38 from the member 39 as shown in Fig. 9.

The sections 40 and 42 are then torn along the crease line 37 to the juncture thereof with the slits 2 and 3, as shown in Figs. 10 and 11. The member 39 is then pulled upward to draw the tongue 5 out of the package and thereby elevate the cigarette 36', as shown in Fig. 12. When the cigarette is partly out of the package, the tongue 5 peels off the cigarette 36', which is supported in its projecting position by the adjacent cigarettes forming the slideway therefor.

Having described our invention, we claim:

1. A package comprising a wrapper surrounding a packet of rod-like articles, said wrapper having a body and an end closure flap and a tongue cut from said body and integral with and lying entirely below said flap and adhesively attached to one of said articles, a jacket surrounding said wrapper and having a side wall containing an opening aifording access to said tongue adjacent to its attachment to said article, and a moisture-proofing sheath enclosing said wrapper and jacket.

2. A cigarette package comprising a wrapper surrounding a packet of cigarettes and bent to form front, back and side walls, said walls having extensions downfolded to form end closure flaps, one of said side walls having a tongue cut therefrom solely below said extensions and depending from a flap aforesaid, said tongue being adhesively attached to one of said cigarettes, said last named flap being overlaid by other flaps aforesaid, said last named flaps containing transverse slits, a jacket surrounding said wrapper and containing a slit afiording access to said tongue, a stamp affixed to said jacket and overlying said first narned slits, a tearable sheath enclosing said jacket and overlying said flaps and stamp, a pull strip bonded to said sheath and peelably attached to the flap from which said tongue depends and means for facilitating the tearing away of the sheath portion to which said pull strip is bonded and thereby causing said pull strip to unfold said last named flap.

A cigarette package comprising a wrapper encircling a packet of cigarettes and having extensions dovmfolded along creases to form end closure flaps, said wrapper having a tongue out therefrom adjacent to one of said creases and depending from one of said flaps entirely below said creases, said tongue being adhesively attached to one of said cigarettes, flaps aforesaid overlying one another and a pair of overlying flaps aforesaid containing transverse slits adjacent to the inner end of the flap from which said tongue depends, a jacket encircling said wrapper and having a side wall containing a slit affording access to said tongue, a sheath enveloping said jacket and having downfolded extensions bonded to one another, a pull strip bonded to the inner surface of one of said last named extensions and peelably attached to said flap from which said tongue depends, said sheath extensions containing a slit and being bonded to one another around said slit.
