United States Patent CARPENTERS TOOL Application May 18, 1955, Serial No. 509,225
1 Claim. (Cl. 254-131) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools for use by carpenters either in the erection or demolition of a building.
An important object of invention is to provide a hand tool embodying a wrecking bar and constructed at one end with a U-shaped hook which projects laterally at one side of the bar and which may be used for various purposes in engaging lumber during the construction or wrecking of a building.
Another object of invention is to construct the U-shaped hook at one end of the bar with parallel side portions or arms to fit closely at the opposite side of a studding or other lumber to effectively grip the latter and apply pressure thereto to remove twists therein and also to incline the bar at an acute angle with respect to the parallel side or arm portion of the U-shaped hook to arrange the bar in a more effective hand-gripping position.
Another object of invention is to construct the outermost side portion or parallel arm of the U-shaped hook with a nail pulling claw at the open side of the hook and adapted for sliding under the lower edge of vertical lumber to jack the latter into a desired nailing position.
A still further object is to provide a tool of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eflicient and effectively used for many purposes, and which at the same time is relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise Well adapted for the purpose for which the same is intended.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accom- The outer end portion of the outermost arm or side portion 8 of the hook isformed with a bevelled nail pulling claw 9 which projects forwardly at the open side of the hook substantially beyond the shoulder 10 at the junction of the bar 5 and arm 7.
The opposite end portion of the bar 5 is formed with a fiat chisel-like blade 11 and which is inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bar.
The tool may be used as a wrecking bar, or for various other purposes, such as removing the twists in a floor joist 12 or other lumber by placing one longitudinal edge of the lumber in the hook 6 so that the arm or side portions 7 and 8 of the hook closely grip the opposite side portions of the lumber, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, and by applying pressure to the bar 5 lateral pressure may be subjected to the lumber to remove a twist therefrom.
The tool may also be used in jacking up a wall or other vertical structure 13, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, by forcing the claw 9 under the lower edge of the wall and the acute angle of the bar 5 with respect to the hook 6 will incline the bar outwardly from the wall to permit effectively gripping the bar and with the outermost side portion or arm 8 of the hook resting on the floor 14 the tool may be rocked on the hook to subject the wall 13 to a jacking action.
Obviously, the tool may be used in substantially the position shown in Figure 3 in pulling up nails in corners, also in pulling up floors.
Other uses for the tool will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
A one piece carpenters tool comprising a U-shaped member having arms perpendicularly joined to and integral with a straight bight part, one arm of said mempanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view showing the hook of the tool used for removing the twists in a floor joist; and
Figure 3 is a view in elevation showing the tool in position for jacking vertical lumber.
Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration we have disclosed a preferred embodiment of invention, the numeral 5 designates an iron bar having a U-shaped hook 6 formed at one end thereof and with the parallel side or arm portions 7 and 8 of the hook projecting laterally at one side of the bar. The bar 5 is inclined at an acute angle with respect to the innermost arm or side portion 7 of the hook and in a direction toward the rear or closed end portion of the hook.
a sharpened edge on the free end thereof extending at right angles to the plane of said member, said bight and said arms each having substantially planar interior and exterior surfaces, a handle integral with the end of the other arm remote from the bight of said member and forming with the said other arm an angle of less than the handle and the end of the other arm forming an abutment that overlies a point on the said one arm that is removed from the said sharpened edge thereof.
