ATTO EYS 2,896,244 Patented July 2 DRIP AND SPATTER GUARD ATTACHMENT FOR A PAINT ROLIJER This invention relates to a drip and spatter guard attachment for a paint roller applicator, and more particularly to a drip and spatter guard which is easily attached to and removed from aconventional ro-ller type applicator.

It is an object of this. invention to provide a combined spray or spatter guard and a drip guard for a paint roller which is readily attachable to and removable from the frame supporting a roller type applicator.

Another object of this invention is to provide a drip and spatter guard of the type described which snaps into place on an arm attached to the roller applicator handle, and the provision of means to prevent rotation relative to such arm.

An additional object of this invention is the provision of a drip and spatter guard of the type described which is attached to a roller type applicator and is in operative position and permits painting on any surface, vertical, horizontal or otherwise.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a drip and spatter guard of the type described which is snapped onto an arm of the paint roller handle and includes securing means preventing accidental removal therefrom.

These and other objects will appear in the following specification taken with the accompanying drawing forming a complete disclosure of my invention.

In the drawing, wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the under side of the device.

Referring now to Fig. 1, wherein there is shown a roller type applicator 10, which includes a roller 12, rotatably journaled on an axle 14, which forms a part of a half bail type supporting means 16 having an arm 18 substantially normal to the axle 14 and also having the bail portion 20 parallel to the axle 14. A handle H is attached to a stem 22 perpendicular to the bail portion 20. The structure thus far described is conventional and forms no part of my invention. The roller mounting means is described as a half bail, but it will be apparent that the drip and spatter guard to be described can be used with a full bail type roller mounting in which the parts 14, 18 and '20 would be duplicated in reversed position.

A drip and spatter guard 24 is mounted on the bail 20 and stem 22 in a manner later to be described. The drip and spatter guard 24 is preferably formed of sheet metal, although plastic or other materials may be used. The drip and spatter guard comprises a bottom portion 26 and upwardly extending sides 28, 28. The sides 28, 28, are preferably in the form of arcs joined at one end to the ends of the bottom member, asat 3t), 30 and prefer ably have their convex surfaces 32 32 note Figs. 2 and 33 facing each other. a a p I crimp-is formed in the-bottom member 26 toconstitute an inwardly extending or reentrant longitudinal clip means 34, having spaced substantially parallel sides 36, 36, and a rounded upper portion 38 connecting the sides 36, 36 forming a relatively deep outwardly facing groove. The effect is that the space encompassed by the sides 36, 36 and the rounded portion 38 is substantially keyhole shape in cross section. I

Substantially midway of the ends of the clip means 34 the sides 36, 36 are provided with shallow outwardly extending indentations 40, 40 for a purpose later to appear.

In use the drip and spatter guard 24 is movedin between the applicator roller and the arm,16 and the clip means 34 is forced over the bail 20. Due to the resilience of the material of which the drip and spatter guard 24 is made, the rounded portion 38 snaps over the bail 20 with the indentations 40, 40 partly embracing the stem 22. The drip and spatter guard 24 will normally be secured against accidental removal, but to further secure it against removal, I provide a hairpin type keeper 42 having substantially parallel sides 44, 44, and an end loop 46. The sides 44, 44 of the keeper 42 embrace the sides 36, 36 of the clip means 34 with sufiicient tension to prevent accidental displacement, and effectively prevent accidental removal of the drip and spatter guard 24. The stem 22 being embraced by the portion of the clip means 34, the drip and spatter guard 24 cannot rotate about the bail 20.

The drip and spatter guard 24 does not interfere with operation of a paint roller on a ceiling, a wall or a floor. Furthermore the curved portions 32 act as catchers for any mist not caught within the guard. Such mist may be easily wiped off. The shape and position of the guard also facilitate application of paint to the roller without the guard engaging the pan.

It should be apparent that I have provided an effective, eflicient spatter guard easily applied to and removed from a conventional paint roller.

It is to be understood that various modifications may be made within the skill of the art and scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A drip and spatter guard attachment for use with a paint roller applicator of the type having an offset handle extending laterally from the roller mid portion and connected to one end of the roller journalling axle by means of a rod segment extending laterally from the end of the handle nearer the roller and parallel to the roller, said guard attachment comprising an elongated resilient sheet material trough member, clip means com prising a reentrant crimp in the bottom of the trough member and defining an outwardly disposed relatively deep groove, the inner end of the groove being of enlarged and rounded cross section to resiliently embrace said rod segment, and a pair of opposed transversely extending indentations in the walls of said groove to receive the handle portion adjacent the rod segment, whereby the guard may be detachably mounted adjacent the roller periphery without danger of accidental pivotal or translational dislodgment.

2. The structure as set forth in claim 1, wherein said guard has a substantially flat bottom portion and trans;- versely spaced radially inwardly projecting sides, and with said sides having convex transversely inwardly projecting face portions.

3. The structure as set forth in claim 1 together with a keeper means, said keeper means engaging said clip means intermediate the enlarged radial inner portion and the open radial outer portion thereof.
