(Cl. 4-286) This invention relates in general to sink stoppers, and in particular to an easily applied and removable sink stopper adapted to fit drain openings of various sizes and which can be easily seated and unseated.

Present day sink stoppers for the most part, other than the ordinary plugs of rubber or the like, include a linkage which passes below the sink and then upwardly through the drain. These are costly in construction, in the first place; and secondly, they are not adaptable to existing sinks which use only the plug type stopper.

It is one object of my invention to provide a sink stopper which is adjustable to fit different size drain openings within a certain range of sizes, different stoppers being provided for difierent size ranges.

It is another object of my invention to provide a sink stopper which is quickly and easily applied to and removed from the drain opening in any sink.

One more object of my invention is to provide a sink stopper which can be spun by hand into and out of drain sealing position.

Another object of my invention is to provide a sink stopper and support, the-latter being mountable between opposite sides of the sink drain, the stopper being threadedly received by the support for rotative movement into and out of drain sealing position, the support being rockable for facilitating the seating of the stopper.

It is still another object of my invention to provide a sink stopper which will not interfere with the discharge of water through the drain past the stopper support.

Other objects and advantages as well as the construction and operation of my invention will be readily apparent by reference to the following description in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:

Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the sink stopper, portions being shown in section for clarity.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with parts broken away to better illustrate certain other parts.

Fig. 3 is an end view of the stopper support with the stopper shown in drain sealing position.

Referring now to the drawing by numerals of referenc, 1 designates the rim about the sink, lavatory, bathtub or laundry tub drain 2 in fixture or sink 3, a depending flange or skirt 4 extending from the rim as shown.

The sink stopper support comprises a block 5 which is internally threaded from each end with aligning right and left hand threads 6 and 7 and receives threaded grip member stems 8 and 9. The outer end of each grip member stem has an offset gripping head 10 which may be provided with serrated surface 11 for better gripping contact with the inner wall of the depending flange 4 of drain 3.

Midway between the ends of the block 5 is a threaded opening 12 at right angles to grip member threaded openings 6 and 7 and adapted to receive stud 13 carried by circular stopper 14. Indentations may be provided in stopper 14 for reception of ones fingers when the stopper is spun to seated or unseated position.

In applying my sink stopper assembly the stopper 14 on stud 13 is removed and the stopper support comprising the block 5 and gripping members 8 and 9 adjusted to approximately fit the drain opening to which 2,896,223 Patented July 28, 1959 it is to be applied. It is inserted into the opening and the block rotated to extend both gripping members into drain contacting position. The block 5 may be hexagonal in cross section and a wrench used to rotate the block until the support is securely in place with the threaded opening 12 in vertical position. The gripping heads 10 are in substantially vertical position as shown in Fig. 3 with the longest portion extending downwardly.

After the sink stopper support is securely in place, the stud 13 is threaded into opening 12 and the stopper 14 to which the s tud 13 is aflixed may be spun to seated position by inserting fingers in indentations 15 and spinning the stopper, its momentum carrying it to seated position after which a slight additional rotative pressure will complete the seal. If desired, a suitable band 14" of neoprene or other similar sealing material may be applied to the periphery of the stopper 14 to enhance the sealing qualities of said stopper.

It is to be noted that one of the important features of my invention is the self-adjustment of the stopper to the rim or seat 1 about the drain since block 5 can swing one way or the other to bring the stud 13 to true vertical position and the surface 14 of stopper 14 into true parallel relation to the rim for efficient seating.

The adjustable support will have a good range insofar as fitting drains of various sizes is concerned. However, its range is governed by the size stopper which can be used. The range of the stopper is controlled by the size of the rim of the sink drain, it being necessary to have only a small band of the stopper in contact with the rim 1.

It is obvious that changes in form, proportion and details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention and I reserve all rights to such changes as come within the scope of these specifications and the claims which follow.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A stopper for sink drains comprising a support member and a stopper member carried by the support member, said support member comprising a block, drain gripping members carried by the block and movable inwardiy and outwardly by selective rotation of the block, an offset elongated vertical gripping head on the end of each gripping member, and a threaded opening in the block carrying the stopper in threaded engagement therewith for movement toward and away from the support member and the sink drain by rotative movement of the stopper member.

2. A stopper for sink drains comprising a removable support member insertable without disassembly of the sink, a stopper member carried by the support member, said support member comprising a block, drain gripping members adjustably carriedvby the block and movable inwardly and outwardly by rotation of the block, an elongated gripping head vertically disposed on the end of each gripping member, a vertical stud carried by the stopper, and a central vertical threaded opening in the block carrying the'stud in threaded engagement therewith for movement of the stopper toward and away from drain stopping position by rotative movement of the stopper member.
