Description

- (No Model.)
B. R. BARBOUR. HOSE STRAP AND MEANS OF ATTACHMENT.
310,289,600. Patented Dec. 4, 1883.4
UNITED STATES PATENT UFFICE.
E. RUSSELL BARBOUR, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES S. KNOWLES, OF BOSTON, AND F. F. RAYMOND, 2D, TRUSTEE, OF NEWTON,
MASSACHUSETTS.
HOSE-STRAP AND MEANS OF ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,600, dated December 4, 1883.
' Application filed February 17, 1883. (N model.) I
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, E. RUssELL BARBOUR, of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, a citizen of the United States, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hose-Straps and Means of Attaching them to Hose, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in eX- plaining its nature, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device for attaching the strap or band in the act of straining a strap around a section of hose and its coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, illustrating the relation of the strap to the tool at or near the end of the straining action of the tool. Fig. 3
is a vertical section, showing the application of the tool to the strap. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6 is a plan of the strap.
The object of the invention is a band or strap for securing hose to couplings andwinding-thimbles, and a device for applying it about the hose in such a way that it shall be drawn about the hose upon the end of the coupling or winding-thimble and compress it firmly thereto.
The band is made of wire, and has the crossbar m and the parallel portions m, which have free ends W. The device for applying it comprises two jaws, A.A, which are pivoted to each other at a, and which have the arms or handles a. The spring a keeps the jaws in contact. The jaw Ahas a groove, a, which is adapted to fit upon the crossbar at of the wire band when the device 0 is in use, and it also may have the two notches or grooves a at its end, in which the free ends of the wire band may fit. The other j aw,A, is provided with means for holding the free ends of the band or strap, and
these means may be either the holes in the lug a or they may bethe clamping-jaw a, which ispivoted at a inthe recess a and has a movement outwardly from the stationary jaw a against the stress of the spring a.
Any other desirable clamping device for holding the free ends of the strap may be used, however.
In applying the bands the free ends are, I
passed through the loop of the strap near the cross-bar, and the cross-bar placed in the M groove of the jaw A, and the ends of the strap in the clamping -jaw, substantially as shown in Fig. 3. The jaws are then opened,
tightly drawing the band about the hose, and the device is then swung upon the cross-bar as a center until it is brought to the position shown in Fig. 2, when it is removed, and the free ends of the band are bent down upon the hose, as represented in Fig. 1.
I am aware that Patent No. 197 ,717 ,granted to John A. Caldwell, describes and claims a tool for fastening and tightening metallic hose straps or bands to couplings; also, that the Patent No. 123,374., dated February 6, 1872, granted L. J. Anderson, describes a bale-band stretcher of peculiar construction but I consider that the devices described in said patents do not contain the features of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. A device for applying hose bands or straps having free ends to hose, consisting or the jaw A, having the groove or notch a and the jaw A, having means for clamping the free ends of the band or strap, substantially as described, and adapted to be used substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the pivot-ed or hinged jaws A A, having the handles a and springs a, one of which jaws has a groove at or near its end, and the other of which lfas a'wireclamping device, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination of the two jaws A A,
pivoted to each other, as described, and having the handles a, one of which jaws has the groove a and notches a and the other of which has a wire-clamping device, all adapted to be used substantially as specified.
4. A hose band or strap having the crossbar m and the disconnected arms m, substantially as described.
E. RUSSELL BARBOUR.
