To (LZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. EUTE- BROUK, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Fire- Arms, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, representing the guard-lever closed, the hammer down, and the gun discharged; Fig. 2, a like view, representing the guard-lever open, the hammer cocked, and the barrel elevated to receive the cartridge; and Fig. 3, a vertical longitudinal section, representing the guard-lever closed, the barrel loaded and depressed, and the hammer cocked.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates to that class of breechloading fire-arms in which the barrel is raised and depressed and the hammer cocked by means of the trigger guard-lever; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a more effective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following, its extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
In the drawings, A represents the barrel; ]3, the stock; 0, the trigger; D, the hammer; E, the mainspring; G, the guard-lever, and H the needle or striker-pin. These parts being all old and well known in other fire-arms, no claim is made thereto when in and of themselves considered. The guard-lever G is pivoted in the stock at m, and is elongated to form the projection on, which is adapted to enter and work in a corresponding recess, 2', in the rear end of the flange J, projecting downwardly from the barrel A. Astud or arm, K, projects upwardly from the body of the lever (l\'o model.)
G, nearly at right angles thereto, and is provided at its outer end with the backwardlyprojecting lip or flange '0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The hammer D is rounded on its front edge, Z, and provided near its lower side with a notch or stop, a, into which the flange 'v on the arm K falls, thereby preventing the guard-lever from being opened or thrown back too far in cooking the gun and elevating the barrel to receive the cartridge L. A retractor, M, is provided; but as it is constructed and operated in the usual manner no novelty is claimed for it, and a more explicit description is deemed unnecessary. The body of the lever G, projection on, and stud or arm K are integral, or formed of one piece, thereby greatly simplifying the construction of this part of the gun, rendering it more durable and less liable to get out of order than guns of this character in which the guard-lever and de vices for elevating and depressing the barrel and cooking the hammer are composed of two or more pieces in the usual manner.
In the use of my improvement, to load the gun the guard is open or thrown back to its fullest extent, as shown in Fig. 2, the projection in working in the recess 2, to elevate the barrel A and bring it into a position to receive the cartridge, the arm K at the same time being brought into contact with the rounded face Z of the hammer, thereby forcing the hammer back until the trigger 0 falls into the notch t in its lower side and the gun is cocked, the flange c at the same time entering the notch n and preventing the lever from being opened too far. After the cartridge is inserted the lever is closed to depress the barrel and bring it into position for firing, leaving the hammer at full-cock, as shown in Fig. 3, the lever being secured by the snap-catch 9', near its outer end, in the usual manner.
I do not confine myself to the use of the flange o and notch a, as these may be omitted, if desired, although I deem it preferable to use them.
It will be understood that the trigger C and hammer D are properly pivoted, and that the spring E is arranged to act in conjunction therewith in the usual manner.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination, substantially as de scribed, of a pivoted gun-barrel, a hammer, and a guard-lever having an integral projection at its inner end,which projects under the 5 barrel, for raising the same, and an integral lateral arm near its pivot, adapted for contact with the hammer, for cooking the same simultaneously with the raising of the barrel.
2. The combination, substantially as set 10 forth, of a pivoted gun-barrel provided at its rear end with a depending recessed lug, a hammer, locking mechanism therefor, and a pivoted guard-lever having a projection at its inner end, which operates on the recessed lug I 5 for raising the barrel, and a lateral arm near its pivot, adapted for contact with the hammer,
for cooking the same simultaneously with the raising of the barrel, said projection and arm being integral with the guard-lever.
3. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a pivoted gun-barrel provided near its rear end with a depending recessed lug, a hammer provided with a stop on its front face,
a hammer-locking mechanism, and a pivoted guard-lever having a projection at its inner end, which operates on the recessed lug for raising the barrel, and a lateral arm near its pivot, adapted for contact with the hammer, for cooking the same simultaneously with the raising of the barrel, and with said stop for arresting the movement of the lever.
4. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the pivoted gun-barrel A, provided near its rear end with a depending recessed lug, J, the hammer D, provided with stop n, the spring E for operating the hammer, the trigger O, a firing-pin, and the guard-lever G, provided with integral projection an, adapted to engage the recessed lug, and integral lateral arm K, near its pivot, adapted to engage the hammer.
