MOUTH-PIECE FOR GRAIN-TRANSFERRING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 289,315, dated November 27, 1883.

The present invention is adapted to the pneumatic system which is described in the following patents: Nowfl November 28, 1882, to L. La Rue Smith; N0. 26 5,..November 28, 1.882, to Lyman Smith, and No. 279,034, June 5, 1883, to Lyman Smith. In
the system, as described in the said patents,
the grain is lifted in the supply or elevating pipe by the production of apartial vacuum in a chamber at the upper end of said pipe, and
discharged therefrom by gravity or the weight of the grain.
My present invention consists in a mouthpiece for use at the end of a supply-pipe, and
adapted to be conveniently moved about a car or other receptacle and collect the grain therein. contained. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mouth-piece. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear view, partly in transverse section.

A is the mouth-piece, which in practice is made about thirty inches in width across the face a, and with an opening, b, of about one and one-half inch in width. The mouth-piece is preferably made of cast-iron, and at its rear end connects, by a suitable coupling, 0, with a six-inch flexible pipe, B,which leads to the stationary grain'supply pipe of the vacuumchamber of the apparatus, as will be under stood by reference to the patents above referred to. Several flexible pipes and mouth piecesmay be used. The under portion of the mouth-piece is provided with an air-cham ber, a, leading to bosses a, cast on the upper part of the mouth-piece. Pipes D are screwed into or secured to the bosses, and constitute air-ducts leading to the chamber 0, and through said chamber to the lower part of the front face of the mouth-piece at d. The pipes D are carried up high enough to serve as handles in moving the mouth-piece about the car or other place in collecting the grain. The pipes may be variously curved, so as to conveniently serve the purpose of handles.
E is a caster resting and revolving in a socket, c, secured to the under part of the mouth-piece, and serves to support and permit of the movement of the mouth-piece along the floor of the car or other place. It will be understoodthat as the air is exhausted within the supply'pipe, flexible pipes B, and mouthpiece A, and the grain or other substance therefore carried into the mouthpiece, air received into the pipes D will mix at d with the grain or other substance, such mixture of air being necessary to the proper lifting of the material.
The special advantages of the mouth-piece herein described consist in the'means whereby it may be conveniently moved about the floor of the car or other place, and whereby a thorough mixtureof air with the grain, &c., may be accomplished, it being apparent that a sheet or body of air of the full width of the grain-inlet is mixed with the grain at the inlet. It is also important that the mixture of air should be below the grain entering the mouthpiece.
The mouthpiece may, without departing from my invention, be variously modified to adapt it to different uses and materials. Thus solid handles may be used and the air admitted to the air-chamber by separate ducts.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. A mouth-piece for a pneumatic lifting device, having a narrow inlet at its face and an air chamber and pipes, substantially as set forth.
2. A mouth-piece for a pneumatic lifting device, combined with a caster or supportingroller, substantially as set forth.
3. A mouth-piece for a pneumatic lifting device, combined with a caster, and moving or controlling handles, substantially as set forth.
4. A mouth-piece for a pneumatic lifting let in an opening or slot of substantially equivalent length, as set forth.
