Description

United States Patent HAMMER HEAD ATTACHMENT FOR WRECKING BARS Henry Johnson, Beatrice, Nebr. Application January 24, 1956, Serial No. 560,989 1 Claim. (Cl. 25426) This invention relates to hammer head construction, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hammer head which may be readily secured on one end of a wrecking bar or similar tool providing means whereby one end of said wrecking bar or tool may be used as a claw hammer.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hammer head embodying a pair of spaced flanges between which one end of a wrecking bar may be positioned, and the flanges bent around the wrecking bar in contact therewith, whereby the meeting edges of the flanges are welded together, holding the hammer against accidental displacement on the wrecking bar.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a hammer head having a solid portion for use in hammering nails or the like, the claw of the head extending rearwardly and being so located with respect to the main portion of the head, as to facilitate the use of the hammer head in removing nails or the like.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a hammer head constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof illustrating the hammer head as secured to one end of a wrecking bar.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the hammer head comprises a solid block of metal indicated generally by the reference character 5 with claws 6 extending from one edge thereof and at right angles with respect to the forward edge of the block, as clearly shown by Fig. 2 of the drawing.
Extended from the head at right angles with respect 5 to the claw 6, are spaced parallel flanges 7 that have "ice their outer edges beveled at 8 so that when the flanges are bent around a wrecking bar, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 9, will provide a cavity for the reception of welding material indicated at 10, securely welding the hammer head to the wrecking bar and converting one end of the wrecking bar into a hammer.
An enlargement 11 is formed onone surface of the head 5 and provides a hammering surface for hammering nails or the like.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a hammer head which is constructed and designed for positioning over one end of a wrecking bar where it may be secured by bending flanges on the head into close contact withthe wrecking bar and then welding the flanges in position on the wrecking bar to secure them in place.
With this construction, it will be seen that the conven tional wrecking bar may be readily converted for use as a hammer or claw for removing nails or the like.
It might be further stated that due to the fact that the claws 6 extend at right angles with respect to the forward edge of the head, the claws will not in any way interfere with the use of the device in hammering nails when the device is to be used as a hammer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A claw hammer structure comprising a rigid bar having a polygonal configuration in transverse section and a claw hammer head fixed on said bar, said head comprising a block, a pair of claws extending rearwardly from said block presenting a flat outer surface parallel to said bar and an inclined inner surface diverging from said bar in a rearward direction from. said block, a pair of flanges extending from said block in parallel relation, said block having a V-shaped recess in the lower side thereof between said flanges in which the bar is adapted to snugly fit, each flange being formed of converging portions engaging about adjacent, angularly related surfaces on said bar, and welding securing said portions together and to said bar.
