Description

0. L. LAWSON.
Filling Poriable Gas Holders.
N0. 28,873. 1 I Patented June 26, I860.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. L. LAWSON, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO NEIV YORK CAR AND STEAMBOAT GAS COMPANY.
PORTABLE GAS-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,873, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O. L. LAWSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filling Portable Gas-Holders on Railway-Cars and Steamboats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The drawing is a side view representing a force pump, pressure gage, reservoir, and cars, with gas holders underneath.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing, A, is the pipe for receiving the gas from a gasometer, or street mains, as may be most convenient; E the reservoir for containing the compressed gas, and in which it is retained until wanted for use; and is made of a series of cylinders connected with each other by pipes F, with a free communication with each other; C, the pipe for conveying the gas from the pump B to the reservoir E; H, the pipe connected to the reservoir E, and running along the station the full length of the train of cars; K the gas holders attached to the cars, I is a flexible hose for connecting the pipe H, with holders K.
In the operation of my invention, the gas is let into the pumps B, through pipe A from a gasometer, street mains, or any convenient place where gas is made, the pump B, is then put in motion, and the cooks a, and b are opened and the gas forced through pipes c, and F into reservoir E, until the required pressure is obtained, which is indicated by the pressure gage D, when the cocks a and b are closed and the pump is stopped. The reservoirE, being thus filled with compressed gas, it remains in this condition until it is wanted for use in holders K. As soon as the cars arrive at the station the hose I, are attached to holders K, under the cars, and the cooks 0 and (Z are opened, and the gas flows through the pipes F, H, and hose I, into the holders K, until the pressure equalizes in the reservoir E and holders K. Then the cooks c, and (Z, are closed, the hose I, are then disconnected from holders K, and the train is ready to start. By this process the holders K, can be filled with gas in three minutes, while it would take at least an hour to fill them directly from the pump thus removing all objections on the point of delay to a train; if three hundred pounds pressure to the square inch be required in the holders K, the pressure in reservoir E, is raised enough higher to allow that amount of pressure, when the pressure in the reservoir E, and holders K, is equalized.
It will be seen to construct a reservoir of suflicient strength and size to accommodate the filling of a whole train at once it is necessary to connect a series of cylinders together, but where we have a less number of holders to fill the reservoir may .be constructed of one cylinder.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The reservoir E, composed of one or more cylinders, or its equivalent, placed between the force pump B, and holders K, for the purpose of facilitating the filling of said holders, substantially as set forth.
0. L. LAWSON.
