Description

(No Model.) l J. WALKER.
PUZLLEYI 0R WHEEL.
Patented Nov. 13, 1883. F'JE 11:
Z) INVENTOB h m ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WALKER, OF. CLEVELAND, OHIO.
)PULLEY' OR WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,522, dated November 13, 1883.
Application filed May 25, 1883. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN WALKER, of the city of Cleveland, county of Ouyahoga, and State of Ohio, have made certain Improvements in Pulleys and Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sectional pulleys and wheels of vari ous descriptions; and it consists in improved means for holding the sections together, as will hereinafter fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure I is a side elevation of the improved pulley. Fig. II is a sectional view of the same, taken on the dotted line as m. Fig.
III is a partly sectional edge view. Figs. IV
to VII, .inclusive, are views of parts of the pulley on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all the figures.
A, B, and O are respectively the hub, arms, and rim of the pulley, which parts in themselves are of ordinary description. The pulley shown in the drawings is in two sections; but it may be made in three or more, if desired.
. In order that the pulley may be easily divided into sections before or after boring and turning, the rim, hub, and arms are cast with slots a, which are of such length as to give narrow junction-pieces b, to be afterward forced asunder.
D D are tapered dovetailed projections cast on the rim and the hub of the pulley or Wheel, over which binding-clamps 'E are forced. The taper of the projections D and the bindingclamps is shown in Figs. III, V, and VII, and by reference to Figs. I, IV, V, and VI it will be seen that thefaces c of the binding-clamps are in contact with the depressed portions (Z of the projections, and also that the surfaces 6 and f, respectively, of the clamps and projections are in contact.
By having all the faces of the clamps and proj ections in contact, as described, the clamps are prevented from being curved or distorted in shape when forced on the projections.
It will be understood that in driving the binding-clamps on the projections the sections of the pulley are drawn together and the faces 6 and f brought in close contact.
I claim as my invention- 1. A pulley or wheel in sections, having dovetailed projections, substantially as de scribed, combined with similarly-shaped binding-clamps, substantially as specified.
2. A pulley or wheel in sections, having tapered dovetailed projections, substantially as described, combined with similarly-shaped binding-clamps, substantially as specified.
JOHN WALKER.
