' RENEWABLE PLow EDGE' Filed April 2, 195e INVENTOR v 0 A. gsi/@Ma BY f! ATTORNEY 5 States RENEWABLE PLOW EDGE Application April 2, 1956, Serial No. 575,389
1 Claim. (Cl. 172-719) The present invention relates to an attachable plow blade cutting edge.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an attachable edge blade construction for a plow that can be easily renewed through replacement when worn so as to renew the plow blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a plow blade cutting edge attachment of the class described above which is constructed so as to be attachable with ordinary tools generally available on a farm.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plow blade edge renewing attachment which will be inexpensive to manufacture, simple to use and attach, and highly durable in normal service.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following specification when considered in the light of the attached drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention shown attached to a plow blade, partially broken away for clarity.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal crosssection taken along the line 2 2 of Figure l, looking in the direction indicated.
Figure 3 is an enlarged generally vertical cross section taken along the line 3--3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction indicated.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical cross section taken along the line 4 4 of Figure l, looking in the direction indicated.
Figure 5 is a front elevation of the invention.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the invention showing the side thereof opposite the side illustrated in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein like reference numerals indicate like parts throughout the several gures, the reference numeral 10 indicates generally a plow blade of the type normally formed with a relatively straight lower edge portion 11 terminating in a bottom edge 12.
A renewable blade, generally indicated at 13, is adapted to be engaged over the lower edge portion 11 of the plow blade 10, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 4. The renewable blade 13 consists of an elongated generally flat blade member 14 which has the major portion of its lower edge sharpened as at 15 to form a cutting edge. A pocket forming plate 16 is welded at 17 along its lower edge to the elongated blade 14 in vertically spaced relation to the sharpened edge 1S thereof. A point forming plate 18 having a thickness substantially greater than the blade member 14 is secured to the forward edge of the blade 14 by welding 19, or the like. The point forming plate 18 is joined to the blade member 14 along a downwardly and forwardly sloping line. The forward edge of .liatented Apr. 28, 1959 the point forming plate 18 is laterally offset as at 20 and joined to the forward end edge of the pocket forming plate 16 by welding as at 21. The lower forward edge of the point forming plate 18 terminates in a plow point 22 in line with the sharpened edge 15 of the elongated blade member 14. The point 22 along with the surfaces of the point forming plate 18, extending upwardly and rearwardly therefrom, have an extremely hard oiled material coating Z3 and 2.4 formed on opposite sides thereof by normal welding processes.
The offset portion Ztl of the point forming plate 18 is provided with a pair of weld beads 25 and 26 extending upwardly in a divergent V-form along opposite side edges thereof. The lower edge of the point forming plate 18 is sharpened as at 27.
All of the weld material used herein to form the welds 17, 19, 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26 consists of the same identical extremely hard material which materially reduces the dulling effects of the use of the edge 13 in the ground.
The blade 14 and the pocket forming plate 16 are spaced apart in parallel relation a distance slightly less than the thickness of the plow blade 1li under normal conditions so that the attachable edge 13 will tightly grip the plow blade 1t) when it is driven thereon by means of an impact tool.
Obviously, as the attachment 13 becomes worn it can be replaced by using a similar device attached in the same manner as described above.
Having thus described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that numerous structural modifications and adaptations may be resorted to without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A renewable edge and point attachment for plow blades comprising an elongated at relatively narrow edge forming blade member, said blade member having the lower edge thereof sharpened throughout its length, said blade member terminating in a downwardly and forwardly sloping forward edge, a point forming plate having a thickness greater than the thickness of said blade member secured to the forward edge of said blade member with said point forming plate extending above said blade member, a transversely offset forward edge portion integrally formed on said point forming plate, a pocket forming plate extending in spaced parallel relation to said blade member with its lower edge offset toward and secured to said blade member in spaced parallel relation to said sharpened edge, said pocket forming plate having its forward edge secured to the offset edge portion of said point forming plate, a sharpened edge formed on the lower edge of said point forming plate in substantially aligned relation to the sharpened edge of said blade member, and a hardened metallic coating secured to the lower forward end portion of said point forming plate to provide a wear surface, said blade member and said pocket forming plate forming therebetween a pocket to receive the lower edge portion of said plow blade therebetween with the opposite side faces thereof frictionally gripped between said blade member and said pocket forming plate.
