Application September 8, 1955, Serial No. 533,166
7 Claims. (Cl. 2-75,)
This invention relates to garments. Itis particularly directed to hemmed skirts or dresses provided with hemmed skirts.
An object of this invention is to provide a hemmed skirt or dress provided with a trimming at Ithe fold of the hem so constructed that when the hem is let down this `trimming will hide the ugly hem mark. When the hem is let down the trimming lwill show fully at the outside of the skirt or dress. This trimming may either be at the inside of the dress peeping out from under the hem of the dress or may be 'attached to the outside of the dress partially projecting down below the dress hem.
Another object of this invention is to provide in ya skirt of the character described another tr irrvm1ingl rutile, or ybinding sewed to the upper edge of the hem so that when the hem is let down to lengthen the garment, it will give a more iinished appearance and will enable the. hem to :be let down with very little labor. This extra trimming, rufle, or `binding may either completely show lat the outside of the dress when the hem is4 let down or mayl partially peep out below the edge ofthe dress.
Still `a further object of this invention is to provide in a dress or skirt of lthe character described, an additional embroidery, trimming or the like to hide the stitches where the upper edge of the hem or the trimming on the hem is stitched to the upper end of the skirt, so as to hide the stitch marks when the stitches are removed to let down the hem.
Yet a further object of this invention is to provide a dress or skirt of the character described which shall be attractive in appearance, comfortable to wear, inexpensive to manufacture, 'easy to manipulate, and yet practical and efficient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed.
The invention accordingly consists in 'the features of constriction, combinations of elements, and arrangements of parts, which will rbe exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the `accompanying drawings in which is shown various illustrative embodiments of this invention:
Fig. l is a front perspective view of a dress provided wit-h a skirt embodying invention;
Fig. 2 is a view of the skirt shown in Fig. 1 with the hem let down;
Fig. 3 is a partially enlarged, cross-sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l;
Fig. 4 is a partially enlarged, cross-sectional view taken online 4 4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. l and illustrating a modification;
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 6--6 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 but showing the hem let down.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designates a dress embodying the invention. The dress 10 is prop 2,883,667 Patented Apr.` 28V, v1959 vided with a skirt 11 provided with an` inwardly and upwardly turned hem 12. The hem 12 is turned about a bottom hem or fold line 13. The upper edge of the hem 12 is folded back as at 13a and is held in folded back position by a line of stitching 14.
Stitched to the hem 12 adjacent the hem or fold line 13, `as by line of stitching 15, is la trimming 16., The trimming may comprise braids, rickracks,` eyelets, lace or the like material. The line of stitching 15 may pass through substantially the longitudinal mid-section of the trimming 16. Thus one longitudinal half of the trimming 16, designated by numeral 1641 peeps out Lbelow the fold 13 of the skirt 11 as illustrated in Fig. l. The other longitudinal half 1Gb of the trimming is hiddenas illlustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Stitched to the end of the hem 12 adjacent the fold line 17 of the folded back portion, `as by a line of stitching 18, is another trimming, rutile, or binding 1,9. Said trimming or rutile 19 may ybe folded longitudinally to form a fold 20. The stitching 18 passes through the folded portions 19a and 1912 of the trimming 19 to retain said trimming in folded condition. Preferably one of the fold portions 1912 is of greater width than the fold portion 19a. The trimming 19 is of course hidden when the hem is up. The hem may be retained in hemmed condition by stitching the trimming 19 to the skirt 11 by `a line of stitching 21.
The garment 10 may `be Worn `by a child, and as the child grows up and needs a longer skirt, the skirt may be lengthened by merely removing stitches 21 and letting down the hem 12. Such position is shown in. Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawing. The trimming Y16 will then be fully exposed `at the front of the skirt. Also the'trimming 19 will then peep out from below the bottom of -the let down hem.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 there is shown a dress 10a embodying the invention and illustrating a modification. Dress 10a comprises a Iskirt. 11a provided with a hem 12a folded upwardly and inwardly about hem o-r fold line 13a. Stitched to the bottom of the skirt 11a adjacent hem or fold line 13a, is a trimming 30 which may be wholly seen at the front of the skirt and partially projects down below the lower end of the skirt. Stitched to the hem 12a as by line of stitching 31, is a trimming 32 which partially projects above the upper edge of the upturned hem and partially projects therebelow. The upper edge of the trimming 32 is stitched to the skirts 11a Iby line of stitching 33, This line of stitching may be hidden by another binding, trimming or the like strip 34 stitched to the skirt as at 3S but overlapping the line of stitching 33. When the childs mother removes stitches 33 to let down the hem 12a, the holes where the stitches pass through the skirt will be covered by the binding 34. The bindings or materials could `be made of the same mate rial of the dress where no contrast is desired.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the sev-eral objects of this invention are yachieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all mat-ter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
