SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,305, dated November 13, 1883.

- The object of my invention is to provide a;

Whip having a covering whichis durable and strong, is highly ornamental in appearance, imparts an elastic quality to the whip, in addition to the elasticity of the material of which the body ci' the whip is composed, and which operates to protect the body of the whip from the action of the atmosphere; and I accomplish this by the means substantially as hereinafter described, and illustratedin the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure ing to my invention. Fig. Il is an enlarged view of a portion of the same. Fig. Ill is a longitudinal section ofthe same at line A of Fig. II, and Fig. IV is a plan view of a part of the celluloid covering which I use to wind the whip in connection with the whalebone strip.

In the drawings, 1 2 represent the core of the whip, which may be made of any ordinary materialoi which whip-cores are made, and 3 represents the ordinary whipbody, which may consist ofthe well-known 'siding commonly used to cover the core, and which, when put together and secured in the usual manner, is made smooth on its exterior and turned down to a proper taper, and may then be covered with any desiredmaterial or substance as ay foundation to receive the exterior covering. I then cut out or prepare strips of celluloid, as 4, of suitable width and quite thin, and wind it around the whip from the large end up toward the tip as far as is desirable, and secure the ends of this strip to the body of the whip by glue or otherwise. reference to its width and thickness, and the ends of this whalebone are also properly secured with glue or otherwise, so as to be perfectly secure. The ornamental buttons, as 6, may then be placed in position; or the whip may be Wound with the strips up to the point where the first button is to be placed and the latter be then secured, and the rest of the whip, or such part thereof as is desired, may then be wound and the neXt button placed, and so on Vuntil the winding is completed, and the tip may then be platted and the snap attached. After the whip has been thus far completed, any liquid preparation may be applied to more thoroughly preserve it, if desired. A whip thus constructed and covered is highly ornamental in its appearance, inasmuch as the strips of celluloid, as 4, or combination of colors, whether mottled .or plain, or variegated in any variety of colors; and the small whalebone strip, as 5, gives a better grasp for the hand, so that the whip may be held with a iirrner hold than the ordinary whips are held, and whips of this class may be made comparatively cheap and will possess more elasticity than many ,whips of higher cost, owing to the fact that the celluloid and the whalebone strips are very elastic, and this elasticity is imparted to the whole Whip.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is Inan improved whip, the combination of a Celluloid strip wound'spirally around a whipbody, and a narrow whalebone strip wound around the whip-body parallel with the celluloid strip, and between the coils of the latter, substantially as described.
