5 Claims. (Cl. 15-127) This invention relates to liquid ejectors, typified by a gun for dispensing liquid or plastic adhesive material such as glue, and pertains particularly to such units which are operated by compressed air and contain a valve adapted to release the glue intermittently as the nozzle is applied to successive workpieces. This application is 'a division of applicant's parent application, Serial No. 52,507, filed October 2, 1948, now Patent No. 2,694,211, issued November 16, 1944, for: Glue Gun.
It is an object of the invention to provide such a glue gun which releases glue upon pressure of the nozzle against a workpiece. Such a nozzle can be held in the hand and moved from without the glue dripping between ejections. The nozzle is particularly adapted to supply glue or other adhesive to the sides of indentures in the workpiece such as dowel holes, grooves or joints, etc., which is more effective than flooding the floor of the opening with the adhesive before inserting thedowel or panel to be attached.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description and claims, the novelty consisting in the features of construction, combination of parts, the unique the relative proportioning, disposition, and operation thereof, all as more completely outlined herein and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings which form part ofthe present specification:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the improved glue gun; and v Fig. 2 is an end view of the nozzle of Fig. 1 shown in working position in a groove.
A glue gun embodying present invention is supplied with glue from a pressurized container (not shown) through a flexible glue conduit 90 so that the glue gun can be readily grasped in the hand and drawn along a groove or other part of a body to which the glue is to be applied. Alternately, however, the conduit 90 might be rigid and the work pieces may be moved in relationship to the glue gun nozzle if desired.
By employing the glue gun with a pressurized source of glue, intermittent release of a valve within the gun permits glue to flow out of the nozzle. Opening of the valve is effected by lateral pressure of the nozzle against the work piece as is explained more fully hereinafter.
More particularly, the glue gun shown is provided with a closed-end nozzle 83 having a beveled tip 84 and lateral apertures 86 for delivering glue to the sides of grooves when drawing the tip along a groove 87 on its beveled surface. The nozzle is attached to a valve assembly employing a rigid conduit section 88 and a flexible conduit section 90 with an operating rod 92 disposed within the conduit and extending from the rigid section into the flexible section. A spherical end 94 of the rod within the rigid section is seated in a corresponding socket 96 of a cylindrical boss 98 of an annular valve plate 100 which is normally held seated across the outlet line 102 by a coil spring 104 the other end of which one point of application to another relations of the members and slidable movement of said nozzle Patented Mar. 17, 1959 abuts against an internal shoulder 106 of the rigid c'onduit segment. About the periphery of the valve plate is a segmented or transversely interrupted bead 108 extending radially nearly to the inner face of the conduit. The opposite end of the rigid section is radially restricted at 110 and externally serrated at 112 for attachment thereover of the flexible portion. The free end of the operating rod carries an enlarged knob 114. f
Accordingly when the bevelled tip is pressed against the bottom of a groove 87, movement of the flexible con; duit against the knob 114 caused the rod 92 to fulcrum at and its opposite ball end 94 to unseat the valve 100, allowing glue to pass between the bead segments 108 and through the escape channel 102 to the outlets 86. As the nozzle is drawn along the groove 87, glue is supplied to the sides thereof, so as to retain for example a panel subsequently inserted in the groove. As soon as bending pressure is released from the nozzle (or more accurately from the flexible section) the spring 104 seats the valve 100. It will be noted that the glue is not sprayed out of the orifices 86 but flows outwardly thereof and is applied directly to the lateral Walls of the groove 87.

While only one embodiment of the present invention is shown and described in some detail, it is to be understood that various modifications may be made therein within the scope of the invention as hereinafter defined, it being my intention to claim the invention broadly within the limitations of the prior art.
I claim:
1. A structure adapted to deliver a viscid fluid under pressure to a confined area having a bottom and side comprising an elongated nozzle having an elongated sub stantially coaxial fluid flow passage therein, one end of said fluid flow passage and nozzle being open for reception of said viscid fluid under pressure, the other end of said fluid flow passage terminating within said nozzle adjacent the other end of said nozzle, said nozzle having an exterior bearing surface extending at an oblique angle relative to the direction of elongation of said nozzle and disposed adjacent said other end of said nozzle, whereby said exterior surface acts as a bearing surface for on said bottom of said confined area, the end of said nozzle remote from said flow passage being blunt, said nozzle also having at least one outlet orifice communicating with said elongated fluid flow passage adjacent said other end thereof, said outlet orifice extending transverse to the direction of elongation of said fluid flow passage and nozzle along a line disposed substantially parallel to said exterior bearing surface and spaced from said bottom of said area when said bearing surface is operatively positioned for slidable movement on said bottom of said confined area, whereby said fluid is discharged from said fluid flow passage via said orifice in a direction substantially parallel to said bearing surface and in a direction transverse to said direction of slidable movement of said nozzle, the outer end of said orifice being disposed closely adjacent said side of said confined area when said nozzle is slidably moved on its said bearing surface along the bottom of said confined area.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said one outlet orifice comprises one of a pair of outlet orifices extending laterally through opposite sides of said nozzle in communication with said fluid flow passage, said pair of orifices being disposed substantially in alignment with one another along a line extending substantially parallel to said bearing surface.
3. A glue gun for applying glue to the first surface of a structure having first and second surfaces disposed at an angle to one another, comprising a conduit for delivering viscid glue under pressure, an elongated nozzle carried by said conduit, said nozzle having an axial flow passage therein communicating with said conduit adjacent one end of said nozzle, said axial flow passage extending within said nozzle toward the other end of said nozzle and terminating on the interior of said nozzle, said nozzle having a blunt beveled tip extending adjacent the termination of said axial flow passage to a region adjacent said other end of said nozzle, said beveled tip including a substantially flat outer surface disposed at an angle to the direction of elongation of said nozzle whereby said substantially flat outer surface acts as a bearing surface for slidable movement of said nozzle on said second surface of said structure to be glued, and at least one orifice extending laterally through a side of said nozzle in communication with said axial flow passage adjacent the terminating end thereof at a position above said bearing surface, the outer end of said orifice being disposed adjacent said first surface at a position spaced from the region of contact of said bearing surface and second surface when said bearing surface is operatively positioned for slidable movement on said second surface, whereby glue is delivered via said conduit, axial flow passage, and laterally extending orifice onto said first surface in a direction transverse to the direction of relative slid-able movement of said bearing surface of said nozzle on said second surface of said structure.
4. A device for applying glue to the sides of a groove structure which structure has a bottom and sides, comprising an elongated substantially rigid nozzle applicator havingan elongated substantially axial flow passage therein, said flow passage extending from one end of said applicator through the interior of said applicator to a point spaced from the other end of said applicator, said applicator having a blunt tip, said tip having an external tip surface disposed at an oblique angle relative to the direction of elongation of said applicator and located in the region beyond said point of termination of said flow passage whereby said tip surface acts as a bearing sur face for slidable movement of said applicator along the bottom of said groove structure, said applicator including a plurality of lateral orifices extending through the walls of said nozzle applicator into communication with said axial flow passage, said orifices being disposed above said bearing surface and extending in a direction transverse to the direction of elongation of said applicator, the crossdimension of said applicator being slightly less than the spacing between said sides of said groove structure whereby the external ends of said lateral orifices are closely adjacent said sides of said groove structure and are positioned above the bottom of said groove structure when said applicator is slidably moved on its said bearing surface along said bottom of said structure, and means for selectively applying glue under pressure to said flow passage adjacent said one end of said applicator.
5. A device for applying glue to the sides of a groove structure which structure has a bottom and sides, comprising an elongated substantially rigid nozzle applicator having an elongated substantially axial flow passage therein, said flow passage extending from one end of said applicator through the interior of said applicator to a point spaced from the other end of said applicator, said applicator having a blunt tip, said tip having a flat external tip surface disposed at an oblique angle relative to the direction of elongation of said applicator and located in the region beyond said point of termination of said flow passage whereby said tip surface acts as a bearing surface for slidable movement of said applicator along the bottom of said groove structure, said applicator including a plurality of lateral orifices extending through the walls of said nozzle applicator into communication with said axial flow passage, said orifices being disposed above said bearing surface and extending in a direction transverse to the direction of elongation of said applicator, the cross-dimension of said applicator being slightly less than the spacing between said sides of said groove structure whereby the external ends of said lateral orifices are closely adjacent said sides of said groove structure and are positioned above the bottom of said groove structure when said applicator is slidably moved on its said bearing surface along said bottom of said structure, and means for selectively applying glue under pressure to said fiow passage adjacent said one end of said applicator.
