(Cl. 4-187) This invention relates generally to sink assemblies and more particularly to improved means for mounting and clamping a sink of the fiat rim type within an opening in a drainboard, table or counter top or other supporting structure.
An object of the invention is to provide improved means for mounting and clamping a flat rim sink within an opening in a drainboard, counter or table top or the like, which means is relatively simple, efiicient, inexpensive and reliable in construction, easily manipulated during installation of the sink and constructed to accommodate various thicknesses of drainboards or supporting tops, thereby eliminating the necessity of providing different size clamping devices for drainboards or the like of different thicknesses.
More specifically an object of the invention is to provide a mounting and clamping device embodying a generally T-shaped molding having its top adapted to overlie the adjacent edges of the sink rim and supporting structure to accommodate an adjusting bolt engageable at its upper end with the underside of the sink rim. The clamp has a vertical leg or element extending downwardly for drawing down the molding and a horizontal leg or element extending below the sink rim and engaging the underside of the supporting structure to accommodate an adjusting bolt engageable at its upper end with the underside of the sink rim. The clamp structure and vertical leg of the molding are preferably formed with cooperating hook portions, so that when the bolt is tightened the molding will be drawn down and the sink rim forced upwardly thereby ensuring a tight seal.
Other objects of this invention, will appear in the following description and appended claim, reference being had to the-accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan view showing a portion of a flat rim sink installed in a supporting structure through the medium of mounting and clamping devices embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section taken substantially through lines 3-3 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.

Before explaining in detail the present invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in its application to the details of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, since the invention is capable of still further embodiments and of being practiced or carried out in various ways. Also it is to be understood that the phraseology or terminology horizontal leg or elethe vertical leg or eleemployed herein is for the purpose of description and not of limitation.
It is customary when mounting a sink of the flat rim type to cut an opening in the counter top, drainboardor the like to receive the bowl and rim of the sink, the rim being supported within the opening so as to lie substantially flush with the top of the drainboard or counter top. The gap between the edge of the rim and the-edge of the opening is closed by a suitable molding which overlaps and is drawn down tightly against the marginal edges of the sink rim and opening to form a seal therebetween.
In the drawings there is illustrated a fiat rim sink v10 installed within an opening in a drainboard, counter or table top or other supporting structure designated generally by the numeral .11. The sink 10 may be of any conventional type having the usual basin or bowl 12 terminating around the upper edge thereof in a continuous outwardly extending horizontal flange or rim 13. The drainboard or supporting top ll may comprise any customary supporting structure as, for example, a laminated material such as plywood suitably covered with a water resistant layer or sheeting, such as linoleum.
For the purpose of installing the sink it) a generally rectangularly shaped opening 14 is cut in the drainboard or supporting top ll, this opening being somewhat larger than the area of the sink so as to permit the sink to be inserted freely into the opening with suitable clearance between the marginal edges of the rim 13 and opening 14 to accommodate a molding 15 by means of which the sink is supported within the opening in the .drainboard or supporting structure.
The molding 15, which is usually plated to present a border around the marginal edges of the sink, comprises a generally rectangular frame which is generally T-shaped in construction. Thus, the molding frame, which may be made of sheet metal, is provided with a top or head 15 which is of suitable width so as to overlie the adjacent edges of the sink rim l3 and drainboard. The molding 15 is also formed with a vertical leg 17 provided intermediate its lower edge and top 16 with open edged projections or blisters 13 forming a hook portion due to edge 13:; curving outwardly of the plane of the web of vertical leg 17 of the molding. Thus, when the molding is installed, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the vertical leg 17 projects downwardly between the edge of the sink rim and the edge of the opening 14 in the drainboard or supporting structure 11, and the head or top 16 of the molding overlies the upper surfaces of these edges The clamping means in the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 is designated as a whole at 19, and comprises a vertical leg or member 2% and a horizontal leg or member 21. The clamping means 19 is preferably assembled to for. a cross with a vertical member 29 lying against the vertical leg of the molding 15 and the horizontal member 21 having one end in engagement with the bottom surface or the supporting structure 11 and the other end underlying the sink rim 13.
The member 20 is a generally rectangular stamping having a cut-out portion at its upper end provided with a tongue 22 suitably coined, for example, to provide a hook engageable with the inner wall of projection 18 as it is hooked over the edge 18a. The lower end of member 263 is notched along both edges to provide series of spaced teeth 23. The bottom horizontal leg 21 of the clamp 19 is pierced and threaded at .25 to receive adjusting means in the form of bolt 2%. Bolt 24 is threaded through the hole 23 and its upper end engages the lower surface of rim 13 as later described. Member 21 is also provided with a key slot 26 to receive the lower end of member 20, and with a projection 27 for engagement with the lower surface of the supporting are tightened, the upper structure 11. Members 20 and 21 are assembled by inserting the lower end of member 20 into slot 26 in member 21 to the desired depth and rotating one member 90 with respect to the other to engage the selected pair of teeth 23 with the lower surface of member 21.
The sink is assembled within the opening 14 in the drainboard or supporting structure 11 with the molding frame 15 installed in place in the manner illustrated in Fig. 3. Any suitable number of clamping devices to cooperate with the molding 15 are positioned around the sides and ends of the sink so as to adequately support the sink within the opening in the drainboard. The hooks 22 of each member are hooked over the hook-like portion 18 of the molding, the members 21 are assembled over the lower ends of members 20, and the bolt 24 of each clamping device is drawn up so as to engage beneath the sink rim'13. Thus, the rim 13 of the sink will have supporting engagement with the upper ends of the bolts 24 and the sink will be supported within the opening in the drainboard by the engagement of the book 22 on each clamping member with the projections 18 suitably spaced on the vertical leg 17 of the molding frame. With the rim 13 of the sink resting at various locations on the upper ends of the bolts 24 the bolts 24 are tightened thereby drawing down the horizontal legs 21 of the clamps. This action exerts a downward pressure on the leg 17 of the molding frame on account of the engagement of the hooks 22 with the hook-like flange edge 18a on the molding frame. In addition, as bolts 24 ends of the bolts urge the sink rim upwardly against the overlying portion of the top 16 of the molding. Hence, this combined clamping action serves to draw the sink rim and molding top 16 very tightly together. With the usual sealing compound interposed between the top 16 of the molding frame and the edge portions of the sink rim and drainboard, the operation of tightening the clamps in the manner shown in Fig. 3 will produce a tight, permanent seal between the top of the molding and the sink rim and drainboard.
Referring now to the structure of Fig. 6, a generally C-shaped member 30 is utilized in place of the two members 20 and 21 of Fig. 3. The upper leg 31 is pierced and threaded at 33 to receive an adjusting means such as screw 34, while the end portion of this leg is turned inwardly to form a hook portion 35 engageable with the projection 18 in vertical leg 17 of molding 15. The lower leg 36 of member 30 is pierced at 37 opposite opening 33 to freely receive the shank of screw 34. The extremity of this leg 36 is provided with a pad 39 engageable with the lower surface of supporting structure 11. A lock nut 40 adjustable on the shank of screw 34 is provided to hold the leg 36 in engagement with the supporting structure.
In this form of clamping arrangement, the screw 34 serves to draw the molding 15 downwardly and at the same time urge the sink rim 13 upwardly to insure sealing engagement between the molding and the sink rim and supporting structure. This sealing engagement is maintained by locking the structure in place by tightening lock nut 40 against the lower surface of leg 36, which also draws leg 36 into contact with the lower surface of supporting structure 11.
The form of clamp shown in Fig. 7 is quite similar to that shown in Fig. 3 in that the two members 51 and 52 are arranged to clamp the molding 15 in place. The vertically arranged member 51, which may be a rod slotted diagonally at 53 to provide a hook 54 and threaded at 55, projects through an aperture 56 in the horizontal member 52. Member 52 is also pierced and threaded at 57 to receive adjusting screw 58. A knurled nut 60 is threaded on the vertical member 51 and serves to draw the molding downwardly and to urge the member 52 upwardly into engagement with the lower surface of supporting structure 11. At the same time screw 58 serves to locate the horizontal member 52 and urge the sink rim 13 upwardly, the combined actions of screw 58 and nut 60 tending to properly locate the several parts in sealing engagement.
Although the structure herein disclosed is described for use in securing a sink in a drainboard or the like, it is capable of being used in mounting or securing any device of similar character in an apertured support where installation conditions are similar.
What I claim is:
Means for mounting a flat rim sink in an opening in a supporting structure, comprising a sheet metal molding frame having a top portion adapted to overlie adjacent edges of the sink rim and supporting structure and a vertical portion adapted to extend therebetween, horizontally spaced upwardly directed open edged protuberances formed out of the plane of the material in said vertical portion, a clamping member adapted to underlie said sink rim and supporting structure, said clamping member having a generally horizontal portion, a hook member having a hook portion within the plane of the hook member and engageable with' a selected protuberance for positioning an end of said horizontal portion with respect to the supporting structure, said horizontal and hook portions being relatively adjustable to accommodate various thicknesses of supporting structures, means for adjusting said portions, and a clamping screw adjacent the other end of said horizontal portion adjustable to engage the underside of the sink rim for clamping the molding, sink rim and supporting structure together.
