This invention relates to a paper roll holder such as for paper towel rolls, facial tissue rolls, toilet rolls and the like.

An object of the invention is to provide a holder having inner and outer spindles for receiving a large paper roll on the outer spindle and a smaller paper roll on the inner spindle located wholly within the outer spindle and which provides an extra supply which may be used when the large paper roll is used up.

Another object of the invention is to provide a holder of said character in which the outer spindle is transparent whereby the inner roll is visible through the outer spindle and which may bear advertising matter on the outer face thereof which is visible through the outer spindle when the outer roll of paper is removed.

Still another object of the invention is to provide interengageable means on the holder and outer spindle by which the outer spindle together with the inner spindle may be conveniently removed from the holder for supplying a new roll of paper on the outer spindle and which spindles are readily separable for removing the inner spindle from the outer spindle so as to dispense the paper from the roll on the inner spindle and to apply a new roll thereon.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiments of the invention are illustrated.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference and more particularly to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 thereof, a paper roll receiving member 10 is provided which is transparent and has trunnions 11 and 12 adapted to engage in sockets 13 in the opposite side walls 14 of a holder or receptacle 15. The roll receiving member 10 is of cylindrical formation and forms a spindle on which the core carrying the roll of paper is mounted for turning movement to dispense the paper from the roll. The roll receiving member 10 is of hollow formation having one end thereof open and the other end closed by an end wall 17 .to which the trunnion 11 is integrally connected. Located within the member 10 is a tubular member 19 having an end wall 20 integrally connected therewith and which end wall slidably and frictionally fits the open end of the member 10 to close the same.

Located within the tubular member 19 is a coil spring 21 which is tensioned against a fixed pin 22 at one end and against the enlarged inner end 23 of a shaft 24 slidably mounted therein with the outer end of the shaft protruding through the end wall 20 and with the trunnion 12 afiixed to the protruding end. The end wall 17 and the trunnion 11 have a central bore 26 disposed in alignment with the bore in the tubular member 19 and the pin 22 is slidable in the bore 26 with the enlarged inner end thereof secured in any desired manner in the bore of the tubular member so as to be removable with the tubular member as a unit. The opposite end of the tubular member 19 is provided with a bore portion 28 of reduced size through which the shaft 24 is slidable. The spring 21 thus functions to tension the trunnion 12 outwardly whereby the trunnions 11 and 12 will frictionally bear against the end walls of the bearing sockets 13 to prevent undue spinning of the roll receiving member 10 when the paper is removed. The tubular member 19 provides an inner spindle for receiving a small roll of paper thereon within the member 10 which is preferably fashioned from transparent material in order that the said roll is visible when the outer roll is removed from the roll receiving member 10. The inner roll may be of colored paper or the same may bear advertising matter on the outer convolution thereof which can be read through the transparent member 10.

There are thus provided two concentric spindles for receiving a large roll of paper on the outer spindle to be dispensed therefrom and for receiving a smaller roll of paper on the inner spindle. The inner spindle is removable from the outer spindle together with the end wall 20 for obtaining access to the inner spindle for dispensing the paper from the roll thereon. In order to remove the spindles from the holder or receptacle 15 the outer spindle is moved axially of the shaft 24 toward the trunnion 12 to thereby free the trunnion 11 from its socket in the holder. Upon removal of the spindles from the holder the shaft 24 may be grasped for withdrawing the end wall 20 together with the inner spindle for removing the paper therefrom. The roll of paper on the inner spindle provides an extra supply which may be used when the supply on the outer spindle has been used up.

In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings, a paper roll receiving member 30 is provided which forms a spindle on which the core carrying a paper roll is mounted for turning movement to dispense the paper therefrom. The said roll receiving member is of cylindrical formation having one end thereof open and the other end closed by an end wall 31. Arranged within the roll receiving member 30. is a cylindrical member 32 having an end wall 33 formed integrally therewith which frictionally fits the open end of the member 30 forming an end wall thereof and closing the same. The cylindrical member 32 isformed with a reduced outer end 34 which fits a central opening 35 in the end wall 31 and which secures the cylindrical member 32 in position within the roll receiving member 30 in spaced relation from the cylindrical wall-thereof so as to provide an annular space 36 therebetween. The

reduced end 34 and the end wall 33 are provided with hearing openings 37 and 38 for mounting the roll receiving member on trunnions 39 and 40 carried by the opposite side walls 41 and 41' of a holder or receptacle 42 fragmentarily illustrated in Fig.4 of the drawings. The roll receiving member 39 is adapted to receive a large roll of paper thereon and the cylindrical member 32 is adapted to constitute a spindle for a small roll of paper located wholly within the roll receiving member 30. The roll receiving member 30 is preferably of transparent material, whereby the roll mounted on the cylindrical member 32 is visible therethrough as well as advertising matter printed on the outer convolution thereof.

The side walls 41 of the holder 42 is mounted for swinging movement on the hinge 44 which is spring tensioned for normally maintaining the said side wall in tensioned engagement against the paper roll receiving member or spindle 30. The said roll receiving member or spindle may be readily removed from the holder by swinging the said side wall outwardly on the hinge 44.

The inner and outer spindles in the forms of the invention hereinbefore described may be utilized as indicated to support a large roll of paper on the outer spindle and a smaller roll of paper on the inner spindle, or the inner spindle may be used independently for supporting a single roll of paper or one or more rolls in superimposed relation. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive of the drawings inner and outer spindles 47 and 48 are provided which may be utilized for receiving a small roll on the inner periphery and a larger roll on the outer periphery or the inner spindle may be removed and used independently as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings with a small roll of paper R mounted thereon. In Fig. 9 of the drawings the inner and outer spindles are assembled as shown in Fig. 6 and mounted in a holder 49 with a large roll of paper S mounted on the outer spindle.

The spindle 48 has one end open and the other end closed by an end wall 50. Arranged in closing relation on the open end is an end wall 51 having a flange 52 extending inwardly in overlying relation with the end portion of the spindle 48 and which slidably fits the spindle to removably retain the end wall in position thereon. The inner spindle 47 is affixed to the said end wall by means of a pin 53 which projects through the end wall with the inner end thereof secured in the inner spindle 47 and with the outer end 54 thereof forming a trunnion. The outer end of the spindle 47 is adapted to be removably secured in the end wall 50 in any desired manner and as illustrated, the same threadedly engages in a central opening 55 therein. A shaft 57 is provided which is slidably mounted in the inner spindle 47 and is tensioned by a coil spring 58 located between the inner end thereof and the fixed pin 53. The shaft 57 protrudes through the end of the inner spindle and is provided with an enlarged cylindrical element 59 threadedly secured on the end thereof forming a trunnion. The trunnious 54 and 59 are adapted to be mounted in hearing openings in the usual holders such as in the end walls 60 and 61 of the holder 49. The tension of the spring 58 retains the spindles in the holder against too free turning thereof and permits of the inward movement of the shaft 57 to remove the spindles from the holder 49 for inserting a new roll of paper thereon. In order to identify the manufacturer of the paper roll used with the spindles, the outer spindle 48 is recessed at one end as at 62 and frictionally fitting the recess is a ring 63 on which the name of the manufacturer may be printed. .The outer periphery of the end wall 51 also provides a convenient location for stenciling or otherwise applying the name of the manufacturer. By this construction the name of the manufacturer is visible with the paper roll in position thereon as shown in Fig. 9 of'the drawings.

' The inner spindle 47 may be removed from tlieouter spindle 48 by unscrewing the trunnion 59 from the shaft 57 and then unscrewing the spindle 47 from the threaded opening 55. The trunnion 9 may then be applied to the shaft 57 and the inner spindle 47 utilized to support a small roll R as shown in Fig. 7 independently of the outer spindle 48.

The flange 52 of the end wall 51 when assembled with the outer spindle 48 provides a stop to limit the movement of the paper roll toward the end of the holder. The flange 52 also serves as a guide to facilitate the winding of the roll of paper R on the spindle 47.

Thus there is provided in the forms of the invention illustrated herein, a paper roll holder in the form of inner and outer spindles which are adapted to receive rolls of paper mounted thereon, one on the outer spindle and the other on the inner spindle which latter roll of paper is maintained in a sanitary condition within the outer spindle and which in one of its forms is provided with a flange adapted to contain advertising indicia which is visible at all times when the holder is in use.

While the preferred embodiments of the invention have been illustrated herein, it is to be understood that the invention is not so limited but shall cover and include any and all modifications of the invention which fall within the scope thereof.

What is claimed is:

1. In a device of the character described, a holder including oppositely spaced side walls, a hollow spindle having a wall closing one end thereof, an end wall removably fitting the opposite end of said spindle, a spindle of lesser cross-sectional size than said first mentioned spindle carried by said end walls to dispose said last mentioned spindle in concentric relation within the first mentioned spindle member, and interengageable means carried by said holder and one of the walls of said first mentioned spindle and by one end of said second mentioned spindle for supporting the spindles in the holder.

In a device of the character described, a holder including oppositely disposed side walls, a hollow cylindrical member having a wall closing one end thereof, an end wall removably fitting the opposite end of said cylindrical member, a hollow cylindrical member of lesser cross-sectional area than said first named cylindrical member carrier by said end walls to dispose said second mentioned cylindrical member in concentric relation withsaid first mentioned cylindrical member, a shaft mounted for sliding movement within said second mentioned cylindrical member and protrudingthrough one end of said first mentioned cylindrical member, said first mentioned end wall and said shaft having trunnions for mounting the same in meetings in said side walls of the holder, and spring means located 'within said second mentioned cylindrical member tensioning said shaft to maintain said trunnions in said bearings and permitting of inward movement of said shaft for removal of the cylindrical member from said holder.

In a device of the character described, two hollow spindles mounted one within the other in concentric relation with the inner spindle spaced from the peripheral wall of the outer spindle for mounting a large roll of paper on the outer spindle to be dispensed therefrom and a small roll of paper on the inner spindle, an end wall removably fitting one end of said outer spindle to close the same and to which the inner spindle is afiixed at one end, a shaft mounted for sliding movement in said inner spindle and protruding through one end of the outer spindle, said spindle and said end wall having trunnions for mounting the same in bearings for rollably supporting the spindles, and a ring removably fitting one end of said outer spindle, and said end Wall projecting beyond the outer spindle and adapted for receiving indicia on said ring and the projecting end of said end wall. l I

In a device of the character described, a hollow spindle having end walls closing the same, a spindle of lesser cross-sectional size than said first mentioned spindle mounted on said end walls in concentric relation within said first mentioned spindle, said first mentioned spindle having a trunnion on one end wall thereof and said second mentioned spindle having a shaft protruding through the other end wall of said first mentioned spindle providing a trunnion in oppositely disposed relation from said first mentioned trunnion adapted for pivotally mounting the first mentioned spindle within a holder.

5. In a device of the character described, a hollow spindle having end walls closing the same, one of the said end walls being removably associated with the spindle, a spindle of lesser cross-sectional size than said first mentioned spindle mounted on said end walls in concentric relation within said first mentioned spindle,

said first mentioned spindle having a trunnion on one of the end walls thereof, and said second mentioned spindle having a shaft protruding through the other end wall of said first mentioned spindle and providing a trunnion in oppositely disposed relation from said first mentioned trunnion adapted for pivotally mounting the first mentioned spindle within a holder, and said removable end wall permitting of the removal of the second mentioned spindle from said first mentioned spindle.
