UNITED STATES oHARLEs KAEPPEL,
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters OF NEW YORK,-N. Y.
Patent No; 287,547, dated October 30, 188 3,
Application filed July 20,1883. (No model.)
-.To all whom, it may conceive Be it known that I, CHARLES KAEPPEL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve form of the truck;
Similar letters of reference indicate the corresponding parts. Referring to thedrawings, A represents the platform, that extends from the curved portion of the rear axle-bearings, B, to and over the fifth-wheel c, which latter is supported in the usual manner by the springson the front axle. The platform A is recessed from the rear axlebearings, B, forward to such a length as required by the truck-body D, which is hinged by the arms (1 to atransverse pivot-rod, d, that is arranged in front of the vertical line passing through the center of gravity of the truckbody, and also in front of the rear axle. The
platform A is also supported by the forward extending horizontal parts of the rear axlebearings, B. The hinge-connection of the truck-body D is located some distance below the recessed platform, the pivot-rod d being supported by the bracket-bearings e, which extend downward, and thus facilitate the dump ing of the truck-body D, while the close fitting of the body D into the recess of theplatform A prevents any pieces of coal or other articles from entering between the platform A and the body D. The truck-body D is locked to the platform A by means of a transverse and centrally-fulcrumed bar, D, that is acted upon by a strong band-spring, f, at one side, and operated by a chain or pivoted connecting-rod, f, one end of whichis connected with the fulcrumed lever f The other end of said lever f is operatedby means of averticalrod, 1', which is furnished with a treadle, r, at its upper end. WVhen pressure is applied to the treadle r, motion is imparted to the lever-bar D by means of the described-mechanism, and the locking-hooks g, which are arranged in opposite direction to each other at or near the sides of the truck-body, are released, and the latter is then swung .downward for dumping its load, lifting the front part of the body so that the rear part'passes back of the center of gravity and drops down by gravity. To one side of the platform A a rod, m, is pivoted, which is connected at its other end to a bellcrank lever, 111/, having its pivot at the rear end of the truck-body D. The endgate D is held in closed position by a centrally-pivoted bar, a, which is guided in the guidepieces 12, and projects laterally at both sides of the gate D the latter being provided with a hole, 11 near each end of the bar a, through which the lockinghooks-n that are attached to the end of the truck-body D, pass, pivoted bar n engages the locking-hooks W, and is acted onby a band-spring, 01*, when the truck-body is in its horizontal position; but as soon as the latter is inclined the arm of the bell-crank m operates upon the projecting end of the bar n, raising it and lowering the other end, thus releasing the locking-hooks a, while .the pressure of the load forces the end-gate open, thereby discharging the load, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.' The truck-body D I dumping by means of a chain or chains, Z, attached to the front end of the truck-body D, and passed around guide-pulleys Z to a winding-drum, Z the shaft of which turns in bearings of the standards A in front of the drivers .seat 8, which is arranged inthe usual manner .on the front part of thetruck-body. One end of the shaft of the winding-drum is provided with a gear-wheel, which is acted upon by another gear-wheel, proyidedwith a handcrank. By turning the crank of the gear-wheel and imparting motion to the winding-drum the driver can pull the truck-body D from its dumped position back into a horizontal position until the locking-bar- D engages the hooks andsecures the body to the platform. I The advantages of my improved dumpingtruck are that a the center of gravity of the truck-body, instead of being back of the hind ispivoted at its upper end to the body D, and
is returned to its horizontal position after- The - rear axle-bearing into inclined position and opens automatically the end-gate when nearly in lowermost position, so as to quickly dump the load, after which the body is returned into its normal position on the platform by the Windlass arrangement described.
I am aware that a treadle and connecting mechanism for releasing the locking-rod of a truck-body have been used heretofore; also, a windlass arrangement for returning the body after dumping into ahorizontal position on the platform, and I therefore do not claim these features, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by-Letters Patent* 1. In a dnmping truek, the combination of the platform, the hind axle-bearings rounded off above the axle, bracket-arms attached to said platform and extending downward in front of said axle, a transverse rod theends of which are supported or pivoted in said bracket-arms, the dumping body, downwardly projecting arms secured at their upper ends to said body, and connected at their lower ends to said transverse rod, and mechanism for readjusting the body after it has been dumped or tilted, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a platform having fixed downwardlyextending bracket-arms, a truck-body having downwardlyextending arms pivoted to said bracket-arms in front of the hind axle, arounded-off bearing abovethe hind axle, a connecting-rod that extends from said bearing toward the end-gate, a bell-crank lever pivoted to the connecting-rod and fulcrumed to the truck-body, an end-gate pivoted at the upper end to the truck-body, a fulcrumed locking-bar that is engaged by the bellcrank lever, so as to be released from the lockhoolcs of the truck-body when the body is dumped, substantially as set forth.
I11 testimony that-I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
