TOBACCO PIPE,
Filed Sept. 24. 1956 10 1,3 12 5 2 Fm 1T //fl// //I III-UV United States Pat t 7 TOBACCO PIPE Goran Jacob Fredrik Hard at Segerstad, Bromma, Sweden Application September 24, 1956, Serial No. 611,546
Claims priority, application Sweden September 29, 1955 2 Claims. (-Cl. 131-194) The present invention relates to a tobacco pipe comprising a substantially conventional combustion chamber attached at the top of and communicating through a short channel with a condensation cleaner.
The condensation cleaner is based upon the principle of the cold wall, that is, thanks to the construction of the pipe the smoke is forced to pass along comparatively large surfaces of a material of good heat conductivity, for example light metal. Water and various tar products will then be condensed on said surfaces.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a tobacco pipe with a cleaner for the smoke that is extremely simple and easily accessible but yet effective, and with means for preventing pipe tars and the like from entering the stem of the pipe.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tobacco pipe that can easily be taken apart, cleaned and put together again.
These and other objects are attained substantially through the new condensation cleaner which, according to the invention, consists of an inner perforated tube and an outer cylindric bowl, against the bottom of which the inner tube rests, that end of the inner tube located remote from the bottom of the bowl communicating with the combustion chamber and the perforations of said inner tube debouching into the bowl, so that the smoke is forced to pass the channel-shaped space between the inner tube and the outer bowl, where it is cooled and cleaned.
An embodiment of the invention is shown diagrammatically in the accompanying drawing which illustrates a longitudinal section through a pipe constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawing the pipe head consists of an upper combustion portion 1 and a lower condensation cleaning unit 2.
The combustion portion 1 consists of a head portion 3 which is preferably made of a suitable wooden material, for example briar and provided with an upper bowlshaped hollow 4 for the tobacco and a lower cylindrical hollow 5 which is wider than the lower part of the hollow 4, and a preferably ceramic plate 6 which forms the bottom of the upper hollow 4 in which the tobacco burns, and lies tightly against the bottom of the lower hollow 5 and is provided with small perforations 7. The hollows 4 and 5 form together a through channel through the combustion portion 1, so that the smoke from the combustion chamber 4 can enter the condensation cleaner 2 through the perforations 7.
The condensation cleaner 2 consists of an inner tube 8, for example of light metal, the outer diameter of which being equal to the diameter of the lower hollow 5, and
2,873,?48 Patented Feb. 17, 1959 "ice edge just rests against the perforated plate 6 and the lower edge of the tube 8 rests against the bottom of the bowl 9 when the bowl is screwed tightly to the head portion 3. Thus, between tube 8 and bowl 9 there is formed a cylindrical space 14 which communicates through small holes 15 with the interior of the tube 8 and through the perforations 7 in the plate 8 also with the combustion chamber 4. At least some of the holes are located diametrically opposite the stem 13, the inner end of which extends somewhat into the annular space 14, so that the inner mouth of the channel 16 of the stem 13 will be surrounded by a wall 17 which prevents pipe oil and the like from entering the suction channel 16, if a greater quantity thereof has gathered in the bowl 9.
The smoke passes through the perforations 7 in the plate 6 under the tobacco into the inner tube 8 and from the latter through the holes 15 into the annular space 14 between the inner tube 8 and the bowl 9. The smoke now passes out through the holes 15 towards the outer wall of the bowl 9, which wall is provided with cooling flanges 11, and must make a semi-circular or fourthcircular course before reaching the inner mouth of the channel 16.
When the pipe is to be cleaned and dried only the head portion 3 and, if desired, the stem 13 are screwed off from the bowl 9, after which both the inner tube 8 and the bottom plate 6 can be taken out.
The embodiment described and illustrated in the drawing is of course only to be considered an example, and the details can be modified in several ways Within the scope of the claims. Thus, the bottom plate can be a part of the main portion 3 instead of being a separate member.
WhatIclaim is:
1. A tobacco pipe comprising a combustion bowl made of a non-metallic material having poor heat-conducting properties, said combustion bowl having a vertical bore passing therethrough, a perforated plate transversely mounted in the lower portion of said bore, a tubular metallic inner sleeve colinearly positioned below said combustion bowl, the upper portion of said sleeve extending within said bore with the upper extremity of said sleeve in contiguous engagement with said plate, a cylindrical tubular condensation member made of a metal having good heat-conducting properties concentrically arranged about and spaced from said tubular sleeve, said condensation'member having a closed bottom wall in contiguous engagement with the lower annular extremity of said inner tubular sleeve, the lower portion of the outer periphery of said combustion bowl having screw threads in engagement with screw threads on the upper portion of the inner periphery of said condensation member, said inner sleeve having a plurality of peripheral apertures therein, and a pipe stem mounted at one end in a peripheral opening in said condensation member whereby tobacco smoke is withdrawn by suction through the opening in the bottom of the bowl axially into the inner tubular sleeve, through the perforations of said 3 1 inner sleeve into the annular space intermediate said tubular sleeve and said condensation member," and through the bore of the pipe stem.
2. A tobacco pipe as defined in claim 2 wherein the portion of the peripheral wall of said inner sleeve directly opposite said pipe stem is imperforate.
