2 Claims. (Cl. 139-44) This invention relates to wires of the type used in weaving pile fabrics, and particularly to an improved cutting wire for a carpet loom.
The pile forming wires of the present invention are prim-arilyused in a loom for weaving Wilton or velvet floor coverings and it is a primary object of the inventionto provide a cutting type pile wire in which the heights of the legs of the tufts will not be substantially equal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pile wire for a carpet loom in which the cutting knife or blade is offset warpwise front the shank or body portion of the wire.
A further object of the invention is to provide a thickened section on the end of a carpet loom pile wire which controls the relative lengths of the legs of pile loops.
Further objects will be apparent from the specification and drawings in which Fig. 1 is a perspective of a pile wire incorporating the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a top view of the tip of the wire of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a side View of the structure of Fig. 2.
The invention comprises essentially the provision of an enlarged element secured to or formed integrally with the end or tip of a pile wire. The conventional knife for cutting the pile loops as the wire is withdrawn, is mounted in the enlargement for the tip of the pile wire so that it is offset with regard to the extended center line of the wire.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a conventional pile wire for a velvet or Wilton loom comprises a shank 5 to which is secured the head 6 in accord ance with well-known practice. The tip of the wire indicated generally at 7 is modified in the preferred form by Welding thereto a thickened element 8 which carries the usual knife 9 secured in the knife holder 10. The
improved pile wire may be formed to provide an integral flare or enlarged nub at the tip which carries the knife 9, or the tip of a conventional cutting wire may be cut off and then welded to the body 5 at ii and 12 as shown in Fig. 2. In either event there should be a gradual enlarging, as shown by the slope of Weld 11, to permit the loops to slide over the end of the wire.
A nub or fiag wire in which the tip of the wire is higher than the body portion of the wire is, of course, well known and has been used to achieve various patter-n effects. The present invention, however, contemplates not an elevation of the loop but a horizontal loop enlarging, so that the knife 9 is not presented substantially in the center of the span of the loop which has been stretched across the top of the wire tip. By cutting each loop with the blade ofiset from the middle or center of the lops, each loop is converted into two tufts having a long leg and a short leg, thereby producing a more textured effect and helping to break up streaks or lines on the surface which, if present, occur in a wanpwise direction.
The improved wires may be used in conjunction with conventional stnaight cutting wires, round wires, profile Wires, and in any sequence as the pattern may dictate. Interesting effects may thus be achieved and will be accentuated in cases Where variously colored or rnoresque yarns are employed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A wire for a pile loom comprising a head, an elongated body portion to which the head is attached, a transversely enlarged tip at the opposite end of said body portion, a cutting element in said tip and laterally olfset from the center line of the body portion, and means in advance of the cutting element for laterally spreading a pile loop to provide cut pile tufts of unequal length.
2. A wire in accordance with claim 1 in which the cutting element is a fiat blade having a body portion positioned in a plane panallel to the body portion of the wire.
