Description

Jan. Z'Z, 1959 F. HAWIE 23 5 HOSE OR THE LIKE SUPPORTER FiledjJune 14, 1955 INVENTOR. Freq em C k Hawie 7 WQJMQ'M United States Patent O HOSE OR THE LIKE SUPPORTER Frederick Hawie, Nichols, Conn., assignor to The Hawie Manufacturing 'Co., Bridgeport, Conn., a corporation of Connecticut Application June 14, 1955, Serial No. 515,289 11 Claims. (CI. 24-79) The present invention relates to a hose or the like supporter and more particularly to a supporter adapted to be connected to a supporting tab.
An object of the invention is to provide a hose supporter or the like which has a minimum of parts, may be secured to a supporting tab, particularly a tab of elastic material, in a simple, yet effective manner and held against relative movement thereon and which can be readily released from gripping relation so that it may be adjusted or replaced on the tab.
This is accomplished according to the present inven tion by providing a rigid base unit having a supportingtab snubbing portion at one end and a pivoted latch means carried by the base for coacting with the snubbed tab to lock it in position.
A feature of the invention resides in the relation between the unitary rigid base member and the latch resulting in simplicity of construction and ease of operation whereby the device will securely hold its position on the tab and yet can be operated with one hand in a simple and effective manner to release the grip on the tab to permit adjustments or replacements of the device thereon.
Other features and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the specification and claims when considered in connection with the drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a front view of the device.
Fig. 2 shows a side view of the device.
Fig. 3 shows a back view of the device.
Fig. 4 shows the device with the button tab in place and the supporting tab being inserted into snubbing relation.
Fig. 5 shows the device in locked supporting, relation.
As shown in the drawings, a rigid base is provided with a button-receiving loop 11 .at one end, a tab.- receiving loop 12 at the other end and a latch mounting portion 13 intermediate the two loops. While the base may be stamped from sheet metal or otherwise suitably formed, it is herein illustrated as being bent up from a heavy wire 14 and preferably has the ends 14a, 14b of the wire disposed at the end forming a tab-receiving loop and enclosed in a sleeve 15. The sleeve not only reenforces the joint between the ends but also forms an enlarged snubbing surface for the supporting tab as will be described.
Cooperating with the snubbing portion of the base is a pivoted latch 16 disposed on the rear of the base and having a clamping portion 16a provided with a slot 17 adjacent the snubbing portion. The end of the latch projects upwardly above the snubbing portion and is offset forwardly together with the upper edge 17a of the slot, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to efiectivel'y grip the supporting tab when in position.
While the latch may be formed with means for pivoting it on the mounting portion, in the illustrated form of the invention it is mounted on the base by means of 'a mounting clip 18 having tangs 19 adapted to be crimped around the wire in the mounting portion 13. The upper end of the clip is rolled at 18a to grip the wire and also provide a loop 20 for receiving a transverse lower pivot bar 21 formed on the latch and floatingly supporting the same for slight movement longitudinally of the base. It will be seen from the foregoing that a simplified construction is achieved which can be readily manufactured and easily assembled.
As shown in the drawings, the latch is pivotally mounted on the rear of the base with the offset portion located forwardly of the base when in locked position. The forwardly projecting end of the latch hasa broad fingerpiece 22 by which the latch can be readily moved with respect to the base to released position.
If desired the clip 18 can be provided with a transverse slot 181) through which the anchor 23 on the button tab 24 may be passed into interlocked relation, as shown in Fig. 4, with the button 25 on the tab in position to cooperate with the button loop 11 to secure a hose or the like thereto.
While the device of the present invention may be used in many ways, it is preferred to detachably and adjustably secure it to a supporting tab 26 such as depends from a girdle or the like garment. Though it can be used with woven supporting tabs, it is highly efiicient in holding to elastic supporting tabs and more particularly to the tabs of latex type girdles since the device will hold to the latex tab and will not shift its position thereon due to the stretching of the tab in use.
To mount the device on the supporting tab, the rigid base is held in the hand and the fingerpiece 22 is pressed by the thumb to move the latch rearwardly of the base as shown in Fig. 4. The end 26a of the supporting tab 26 is passed through the slot over the lower edge 17b about the snubbing portion on the base, back through the slot 17 engaging the upper edge 17a. An upward pull on the supporting tab will move the latch about its pivot into the position shown in Fig. 5 in which the upper edge of the slot snaps over the snubbing portion and bears against the supporting tab. The latch above the upper edge is rearwardly bowed, as shown at 27. This maintains the tab in effective snubbed relation around the snubbing portion and causes the latch to press the lower edge 17b against the tab when a longitudinal pull is on the tab. Even though the supporting tab may be of elastic material, the stretching and returning of the supporting tab in use does not relieve the snubbed portion of the tab from the gripping action of the clamping portion of the latch so as to permit relative movement between the supporting tab and the device of the present invention.
However, when it is desired to release the supporting tab, it is merely necessary to hold the base in the hand, apply pressure by the thumb to the elongate fingerpiece and press it rearwardly. This moves the latch to. the position shown in Fig. 4 wherein the supporting tab is free of the snubbing action and can be withdrawn.
Not only does the device of the present invention provide a strong hold on the supporting tab and prevent relative movement thereon, but also provides. a simple and effective means for adjusting the device with respect to the tab. This is accomplished by holding the base in the hand and pushing the latch back with the thumb to release the holding action whereupon the supporting tab can be moved through the slot around the snubbing portion to the desired extent to. properly locate. the device on the tab and the tab given a longitudinal pull causing the latch to be snapped into holding relation.
It will be seen from the foregoing that l have provided a simple and effective device which can be readily manipulated by one hand, which can be easily applied 'to' 3 a supporting tab and is effectively held thereon against displacement and yet which can be readily and easily adjusted on the tab to the desired position.
Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of the claims and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
