SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,674, dated October 16, 1883. Application filed July 3, 188 3. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Josnrn: BASSLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San J os, in the county of Santa Clara and State of Galii'ornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saddles and Covers therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

llIy invention relates to an improvement in saddles and covers therefor, the combination, construction, and arrangement of the parts being more fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a saddle-cover constructed according to my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a saddle having my improved cover thereon.

The cover herein described is especially designed for use in connection with my improved saddle patented to me May 2, 1882, in which a series of springs are arranged so as to afford a soft yielding seat for the rider; but the present invention is equally applicable to other forms of saddles where it is desired to secure a comfortable and elastic seat.

A represents a saddle-frame, which may be of any ordinary or desired form and upholstered in any desired manner.

In the drawings, I have shown my improved cover as applied to asaddle constructed according to the specification of my patent hereinbefore referred to.

The cover B for the cushion or part of the saddle upon which the rider is seated is of leather or other suitable material, C, at its central portion, and has two or more strips or pieces of elastic webbing, D, attached to or inserted therein at those parts of the saddle cover upon which the tension occurs during the use of the saddle. These pieces of elastic webbing may be incorporated with the cover, either by'cnt'ting out a portion of such cover at the parts where it is desired to have an elastic action to counteract and overcome the strain and tension upon the cover exerted by the weight of the user and stitching or otherwise attaching together the edges of such cutaway portion and the elastic; or the cover may be formed by attaching the elastic strips directly to theouter edges of a piece of leather forming the central part of the cover and then binding and strengthening the outer edges of such elastic strips by the attachment thereto of strips of leather E, as shown in the drawings, whereby means are afforded for connecting the elastic portions to the saddle.

F represents an opening between the saddle-cover and the upholstery of the saddle. This opening is secured by leaving the cushion detached from the body of the saddle at that part. The saddle-cover is securely held in position by means of straps, as shown in Fig. 2. By this arrangement I secure the admission of cool air into the body of the saddle for the purpose of keeping the same cool and preventing any injury to the animals back by overheating.

This improvement is equally applicable to saddles upholstered or stuffed in any way other than that described in my aforesaid patent, wherein a yielding or tion is imparted thereto during use. Saddlespringing ac-.

covers constructed according to this improvement will be found to more readily conform to the several positions thestuffing of the sad die assumes in use.- with the saddle-frame will prevent the cover tearing away after a short usage. The cover will last longer and be more comfortable in use than where no elastic connection is employed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A saddle-cover having central inelastic portion, 0, elastic ends or sides D, attached at their inner edges to said inelastic central portion, and the inelastic strips E, attached to the outer edges of the elastic material for the purpose of binding and strengthening the same and affording means for connecting said elastic material with the saddle, substantially as set forth.

2. A saddle having frame A, a suitable filling, cover B, having central inelastic portion, 0, strips or pieces of elastic material D, connecting said inelastic portion 0 and the saddie-frame and an air-opening, F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
