8 Claims. (Cl. 229-57) This invention relates to bags, and more particularly to a pasted closure construction for a multi-ply bag.
The invention is hereinafter described particularly as it pertains to a bag having an inner ply consisting of two layers of paper laminated together by asphalt, and one or more outer plies of plain paper suchgas natural kraft paper. If such a bag is made with a conventional pasted closure in which there is adherence only of the asphaltlaminated ply to plain paper, there is a possibility that the closure may fail, due for example to embrittlement of the asphalt in the asphalt-laminated inner ply in cold weather. The principal object of the invention is the provision of an improved pasted closure construction for a bag of this class featured by substantial direct adherence of plain paper to plain paper, instead of adherence only of the asphalt-laminated ply to plain paper, to eliminate the possibility of failure of the yclosure due to embrittlement of the asphalt. It Will be understood that the invention is not limited to a bag in which the inner ply consists of two layers of paper laminated together by asphalt, but is applicable to a bag with an inner ply of any material which is of such nature as to make it desirable to provide for substantial direct adherence of plain paper to plain paper in the closure to avoid failure of the closure. For example, the invention is applicable to a bag in which the inner ply consists of a single layer of paper impregnated with asphalt, or consists of a wax-coated paper, or consists of sheet plastic material such as cellophane, polyethylene or the like. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly comprises the constructions hereinafter described, the scope of the invention being indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which several of various possible embodiments of the invention are illustrated.
Fig. l is a view of the lower portion of a bag tube having ati-inner ply consisting of two layers of paper laminated together by asphalt and an outer plain paper (natural kraft) ply, the tube being shown with a closure of this invention partially formed;
Fig. 2 is a greatly enlarged section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l showing the pattern of paste applied to the closure;
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and 3 showing the completed closure;
Fig. 5 is a greatly enlarged section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 4;
Figs. 6-10 are views corresponding to Figs. 1-5, respectively, illustrating a modication.
Corresponding reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to Fig. l, there is indicated at 1 a flat bag tube. Only the lower portion of the tube is shown. As
illustrated, the tube is a two-ply tube, the inner ply being fi ICC designated 3 and the outer ply being designated 5. As appears in Figs. 2 and 5, the inner ply 3 consists of two layers 7 and 9 of paper (such as kraft paper) laminated together by asphalt 11. The outer ply 5 consists of a single layer of plain paper, such as kraft paper. While only one outer-plain paper ply is shown for simplicity, it will be understood that the tube may have more than one outer plain paper ply. It may be a three-ply tube, for example, in which case it will have the inner asphaltlaminated ply 3 and two outer plain paper plies like 5.
Fig. 1 shows the lower portion of the tube with a diamond-fold type of closure partially formed. As is apparent from Fig. l, the closure comprises inwardly directed end flaps 13 and first and second side aps 15 and 17. The transverse edge of the portion of the inner-ply 3 included in the side flap 15 registers with the transverse ln forming the closure, adhesive` (paste), designated A, .I
is applied in a U-shaped pattern as shown in Fig. 3. This pattern consists of a stripe of adhesive 25 extending transversely across the side flap 17 adjacent its outer transverse edge 21 and stripes 27 extending from the ends of stripe 25 in lengthwise direction with respect to the tube over the end flaps 13. The stripe 25 is wider than the openings 19 and generally centered in respect to the The first side flap 15 is folded over upon a n openings. transverse fold line 29 to overlie the end flaps 13. The
portion of the paper ply 5 included in the `folded-over first side flap 15 is on the outside of the flap, the entire outside of first side flap 15 being constituted by a portion Y of the paper ply 5. The second side flap 17 is folded` over upon a transverse fold line 31 to overlie the rst.
The portion of the paper ply 5 included in the folded-over Y second side flap 17 is also on the outside.
The inside of the folded-over second side ap becomes adhered to the outside of the folded-over first side flap, that is, to the portion of the paper ply 5 included in the first side ap. Those portions 23 of the portion of the paper ply 5 included in the second side ap which-are` exposed through the openings 19 are secured directly to the first side flap by the adhesive, even through thisportion vof ply is on the outside. This direct adherence of the portions of the paper ply 5 included in the closure eliminates the possibility of failure of the closure as might otherwise occur due to embrittlement of the asphalt in the ply 3 in cold weather. In this respect, itis to be observed that if the portion of the asphalt-laminated ply 3 in the second side flap 17 were pasted to the first side flap 15 without adherence of the portion of ply 5 in flap 17 to flap 15, embrittlement of the asphalt would be apt to result in failure of the closure via separation of the layers of ply 3 or separation of the second side flap from the first.
Figs. 6-10 illustrate a modification in which the portion of the inner ply 3 included in the second side ap 17 is formed to expose a part of the paper ply 5 by having the outer transverse edge 33 of this portion spaced inward from the outer transverse-edge 35 of the portion of the paper ply 5 included in side flap 17. The resultant exposed portion of the ply 5 is designated 37. The pattern of adhesive (paste) A in this case is also U-shaped, consisting of a stripe 39 extending transversely across the side flap 17 adjacent its outer edge 21 and stripes 41 com? Patented Dec. 16, 1958 sponding to stripes 25. The stripe 39 overlaps the edge of the inner ply 3. The closure is completed in the same manner as above described. In the completed closure, the exposed portion 37 of the paper ply 5 in flap 17 is secured directly to the-portionof the paper plyv 54 in` fiap 15.
In view` ofthe above, it will `be seen that theV several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As variousl changes could be made in the above con'- structions without departing frornthe scop'c of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in theaccompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
We claim:
l. A closure construction fora bag of` the type having an inner ply and at leastl one paper ply outside said inner ply, said inner-ply comprising a material differentV from the paper plyA and which is'less desirable for closure adherihg than paper, said construction comprising inwardly directed end flaps and first and second side aps, the rst side flap being folded over upon the end flaps and the second side `flap being folded over on the first side flap, the transverse edge of the portion of the inner ply included in the first side flap registering with the transverse vedge of the portion of the paper ply included in the first side flap so that the entire outside of the first side flap consists of a portion of the paper ply, the portion of the inner ply included in the second side flap being formed so that a part of the portion of the paper ply included in the second side flap on the outside of the inner ply is exposed toward the outside of the first side flap, a portion of said second side flap including said exposed part of the portion of the paper ply included therein being secured to the first side ap by'adhesiv'e.
`2`. A closure construction as set forth iny claim 1 wherein the portion of the innerply included in the secondV side flap is formed to expose part of the paper ply by providing openings in the inner ply extending completely through said innerply but not extending through thepaper ply.
3. A closure construction as set forth in claim` 2 wherein the openings are arranged in a row adjacent the outer transverse edge of said second side ap.
4. A closure construction as set forth in claim 3 wherein the adhesive is applied in a pattern including a stripe of adhesive extending transversely across the second side flap wider than the openings and generally centered in respect to the openings.
5. A closure construction as set forth in claim 1 where` inthe portion of the inner ply included in the second 6. 7. A closure construction for a bag of the type having an inner ply consisting of two layers of paper laminated p together by asphalt and at least one paper ply outside said inner ply, comprising inwardly directed end flaps and first and second side flaps, the first side fiap being folded over upon the'end fiaps and the second side ap being folded over on the first side flap, the transverse edge of the portion of the inner ply included in the rst side ap `registering withV the transverse edge of the portion of the paper ply included in the first side flap so that the entire outside of the first side ap consists of a portion of the paper ply, the portion of the inner ply in eluded in the second side flap being formed so that a part of the portion ofthe paper ply included in the second side flap on the outside of the inner ply is exposed toward the outside of the first side flap, a portion of said second side flap includingv said exposed part of the portion of the paper ply included therein being secured to the first side ap by adhesive.
8. A closure construction for a bag of the type having an inner ply consisting of a composite paper-asphalt material and at least one p aper ply outside said inner ply, comprising inwardly directed end flaps and first and second side flaps, the first side flap being folded over upon thev end flaps and the second side ap being folded over on theY first side flap, the transverse edge of the portion of the inner ply included in the first side flap registering with the transverse edge of the portion of the paper plyA included in the first side flap so that the entire outside of the first side ap consists of a portion of the paperply, the portion of the inner ply included in the second side ap being formed so that a part of the portion of the paper ply included in the second side flap on the outside of the inner ply is exposed toward the outside ofV the first side flap, a portion of said second side ap including said exposed part of the portion of the paper ply included therein being4 secured to the first side flap 4by adhesive.
