My present invention relates to a hair tapering device and more particularly to a novel hair tapering attachment for an electric razor.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device for trimming or cutting hair on a taper.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a device for cutting hair which can be mounted on a conventional electric razor.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hair tapering attachment for an electric razor which is simple and easy to use.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts, more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and more particularly defined in the appended claims.

Between regular haircuts, it is sometimes necessary to trim the hairline around the back of the head and the cars. This is done by providing a tapered cut, the barber manually varying the distance of the cutters from the surface of the skin. The success or symmetry of the results obtained depends on the skill of the barber. The present invention is designed to provide a device which can be used by inexperienced operators to provide a neat and perfect taper.
The present invention accomplishes a perfect taper by providing an attachment for a conventional electric razor mounted in such manner that the cutting stroke will provide the necessary taper. The deviceof the present invention will cut the hair to a neat taper regardless of the skill of the operator.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment which in effect constitutes a comb gage. It can be'made of any suitable material such as plastic. The device is illustrated mounted hair tapering attachice on a cap which fits the head of a Remington electric razor. This is for illustrative purposes only. The device can similarly be mounted to fit other types of electric razors. The device comprises a pair of spaced parallel longitudinal'members 10 and 11 mounted transversely on the electric razor cap 12. Each member 10 and 11 is provided with a straight bottom edge portion 13 which is angularly disposed to the top of the cap 12. At the forward end the bottom edge is provided with a curved portion 14 tapering towards the front end 15. At the rear end each member is rounded as at 16. Since these members set downwardly on to the cap 12 they are provided with rectangular cut out portions 17 fitting the top portions of the cap at each end of the central opening. The rearwardly extended ends of the members 10 and 11 are provided with triangular supporting inserts 18 which fit between the sides of the cap and the inner sides of the members 10 and 11 for rigid support.
A plurality of comb members extend in spaced parallel relation between the members 10 and 11. These comb members are angularly disposed pointing towards the front of the attachment. The first comb member 19 is provided with large coarse teeth terminating on the top edge of the cap wall. The next comb member 20 is provided with teeth, preferably finer than the teeth 19 and terminating at the top edge of a transverse wall member 21, see Figs. 4 and 6. The next set of transverse teeth 22 is shorter than the teeth 20 and also terminates at the top of a similar wall portion 23. The last row of transverse teeth 24 is the shortest and terminates at the top of a similar short wall portion 2.4a.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 6, when the cap 12 is mounted on the top of an electric razor it will be noted that the wall portions 21 and 23 will slide between the shaving heads of the razor and that the plane of the shaving heads will be at an angle to the straight portion 13 of the supporting members 10 and 11. When the razor is stroked forwardly the larger hairs will first enter the comb 19 which will stand the hairs up for cutting by the leading edge of the first shaver head. As the device moves forwardly the comb teeth 20 will pick up the hairs, keep them erect and they will be bent forwardly by the top of the wall portion 21 into the trailing edge of the first cutting head. The hairs then snap by into the second cutting head. The comb teeth 22 accomplishes the same results at the trailing edge of the second cutting head and into the third cutting head. The last set of comb teeth 24 bends the hairs into the trailing edge of the third cutting head. Thus each hair is forced into the front and trailing edges of each cutting head. Since the razor is angularly disposed the rear edge is closer to the skin than the forward edge and additional portions of each hair are cut at each cutting edge. It will be found in use that the beginning of the stroke does most of the cutting and that the cutting action tapers off until a point is reached when no further hair is cut. Thus if the device is moved up and down along the back of the neck an even tapered trim is obtained.
The size and plane of contour of the area trimmed is determined by'the number of cutting edges on the razor, the comb gage measurement and the angle at which the attachment holds the cutting edges. In the form shown in Figs. '3 and 7, the transverse combs are mounted closer to the bottom edge of the supporting parallel members to provide a closer cut. This form is also provided with reversed teeth to permit cutting of fine hairs on the down stroke. Referring to Figs. 3 and 7 the shaver cap 25 is provided with spaced parallel members 26 similar to the members 10 and 11 but with a straight bottom edge portion 27 which is close to the top wall of the cap so that the cutting edges of the razor are closer to the bottom edges 27 as shown in Fig. 7, than in the form shown in Fig; '6. The members 26 are similarly braced by thetriangularportions--28. The front comb member 29 is mounted similarly to the comb member 19 in the previous form. Whenthe device is usedfor-trimming the hair around theears thehead must be =tilted lengthwise of the'cap. This-can be accomplished by the use of'the attachment shown in Figsl 4 and 5. A flat plate 33-is provided with an integral wall portion 34 extending at right angles fromone side edge. The portion 34 is-cut out at 35 to allow room for the cap 12. A bar'36 is held in spaced relation to the'plate 33 by a centralscrew 37. Referring to Fig. 4, the attachment is pushed on to the rear of the device as shown in Fig. 2 so that the bracing triangular members 18- slide between the plate 33 and-bar 36. The screw 37 may be tightened to ensure a'good-friction grip. In this position the wall portion 34 will lift one end of the cap 12 since it will extend below the bottomedge 13 of the sidemember 10. When the razor is inserted the device shown in Fig. 4 will allow trimming of the right ear. An identical device, with the Wall portion 34 positioned at the opposite end of the plate 33 will tilt the attachment in the opposite direction and will allow trimming of the left ear.
Figs. 8 and 9 illustrate another form of the attachment inwhich the attachment is mounted directly on the razor rather than on the cap. This form comprises a plurality of spaced parallel comb members 38 each having a straight bottom edge 39 and tapered front and rear ends 40 and 41. The top edges may be integrally connected by the material 42 and are provided with angularly disposed portions 43 which incline downwardly and rearwardly from a forward position and terminate in a mounting bar orflange 44 extending integrally across the combportions and at an angle of 90 to the surfaces 43.
Adjacent the front portion of the surfaces 43 and between the'surfaces 43 and the bottoms 39, a bar 45 ex tends through th'ecombs 38. To the rear of the portions 43 and parallel to the bar 45 is a second bar 46 similarly positioned. Due to the angle of the surfaces 43, the bar46 will be closer to the bottoms 39 than the bar 45.
As can be seen in Fig. 8, the cutting blades of the electric razor are positioned along the angular portions 43. Here the electric razor 47 is provided with a shaving head 48 carrying two spaced parallel cutting members 49 and 50. Mounted on one side of the cutting head 48 I provide a plate -51'having inturned U-shaped ends. The space between the U-shaped ends is approximately equivalent to the length of the integral bar 44.- This permits the bar 44 to be frictionally forced into this'space to mount the attachment on the razor.
With the attachment mounted as shown inFig. 8the razor will be positioned at an angle to the skin when the bottom portions 39 of the comb members'38 are'flat against the skin. In use the larger hairs hit the forward edge'of the cutter 50 which cuts off the upper ends of the'hairs. As the device'moves forwardly the forward bar 45 engages the hairs and pushes them forwardly into the'rear cutting edge of the cutter 50; Since'the razor is angularly disposed, the rear edge 'is closer to the n than the forward edge and-additional portions of the hair will'be cut. After the passage of 'the'bar"45 the hairs springnp. andengage the forward edge of the cutter 49. Again a portion of the hair is clipped off. Further movement will cause the rear bar 46 to engage the hairs and push them against the rear edge of the cutter 49, again removing some hair. Thus the hairs from the front end of the razor to the rear end of the razor are all tapered, having been subjected to from one to four cutting actions depending on their position under the razor. At -this point the bars and cutters become overloaded with hair which blanket the cutting edges and prevent continuous cutting on further movement of the device.
The device of the present invention thus provides a tapered cut of varying lengths simultaneously over a relatively large area at a fixed portion of the cutting stroke. The result is not affected by the skill of the operator and is always uniform. The device itself is simple inconstruction and economical .to manufacture and assemble. Other-advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent to a person skilled'in the art;
I claim:
l. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spacedparallel elongatedmembers, each'of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight fiat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said fiat bottom edge portions beingangularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head.
2. Ahair tapering device comprising-a pair of spaced parallel-elongated members, each of said membershavinga flat bodyportion tapering toward each end and having astraight flat bottom edge portion angularly disposed to the :top of said member, and. spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, said elongated members being mounted on the cap of an electric razor head.
3. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a fiat'body portion tapering toward each end and havinga straight fiat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means-for mounting said device on an electric razor, said fiat bottom 'edgeportions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said hair engagingmembers comprising rows of comb teeth.
4. A hairtapering device comprising a pair of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a fiat body portion tapering toward eachend'and having a straightfiat bottomedgeportion angularly disposed to' the top 'of said member, and spaced parallel hair-engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, said elongated members being mounted onthe capof anelectric razor head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of combteeth.
5. A'hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced'parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion, spaced parallelhair engaging members extending-transversely betweensaid elongated members, and-means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said fiat'bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth angularly disposed towards the front of the device.

A hair tapering device comprising "a' pair'of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having'a'flat body; portion tapering'toward eachend and having a straight fiat bottom edge'portion angularly disposed to 'the:top of*said-member, and spaced'parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, said elongated members being mounted on the cap of an electric razor head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth angularly disposed towards the front of the device.
7. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said fiat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor.

A hair tapering device comprising a pair of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion angularly disposed to the top of said member, and spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, said elongated members being mounted on the cap of an electric razor head, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor.
9. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said flat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor.
10. A hair tapering device comprising a pair of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion angularly disposed to the top of said member, and spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongatedv members, said elongated members being mounted on the cap of an electric razor head, said hair engaging member comprising rows of comb teeth, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor.
11. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and mean for mounting said device on an electric razor, said flat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth angularly disposed towards the front of the device, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor.

A hair tapering device comprising a pair of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion angularly disposed to the top of said member, and spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, said elongated members being mounted on the cap of an electric razor head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth angularly disposed towards the front of the device, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor.

A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight fiat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said flat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor, the intermediate hair engaging members extending from the top edge of said Wall portions.

A hair tapering device comprising a pair of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion angularly disposed to the top of said member, and spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, said elongated members being mounted on the cap of an electric razor head, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor, the intermediate hair engaging members extending from the top edge of said wall portions.
15. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight fiat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said flat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor, the intermediate hair engaging members extending from the top edge of said wall portions.
16. A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight fiat bottom edge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor, said flat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving head, said hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth angularly disposed towards the front of the device, said elongated members having spaced parallel wall portions extending transversely therebetween and adapted to extend between the shaving cutters of the razor when the device is mounted on the razor, the intermediate hair engaging members extending from the top edge of said wall portions.

A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated members, each of said members having a fiat body portion taper-ing toward each end and having a straight flat bottom edge portion, spaced ingsai'd*"devie'e on an electric;ra'zor, saidflat-bottom. edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane'of thecle'ctric' razor shaving head, said hair engaging mem-t bers comprising rows of comb teeth, the last row of comb teeth being slanted rearwardly.
18: Ahair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced-parallel" elongated members, each'of said members having a'flat body portion-tapering towardeach end andhaving a straight'fiat bottomedge portion, spaced parallel hair engaging members extending transversely between said elongated members, and'means for mounting saiddevice on an'electric razor, said' flat bottom edge portions being angularly disposed to the plane of the electric razor shaving headfsaid hair engaging members comprising rows of comb teeth angularly disposed towards the front of the device, the last row of comb teeth' being slanted re'arwardly;

A hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated comb members, each" of said members-having a flat body portion tapering toward each end and having a straight fiat bottom edge and a slanted top edge portion'intermediate its ends, said slanted top edges slantingi-do'wnwardly and rearwardly, spaced parallel guide'bars extending transversely through saidrcomb= members, said bars being positioned midway between said bottom and slanted top edges, and means for mounting said device on an electric razor.
ZOLA hair tapering device comprising a plurality of spaced parallel elongated comb members, each of said members having a fiat body portion tapering toward each end and 'having a straight fiat bottom edge and a slanted top edge portion intermediate its ends, said slanted top edges slanting downwardly and rearwardly, spaced parallel guidebars extending transversely through said comb members,r.said-. bars being positioned midway between said bottom and slantedv top edges, and means integral with said comb members for mounting said device on an electric razor, said meansincludingtan integral bar extending at right angles from the rear of said top slanted portion.
