J., a corporation of New Jersey This invention relates to golf bags and is directed particularly to novel types and arrangements for the pockets in which the golf balls may be carried.

In my 'copending application Serial No. 612,422, filed September 27, 1956, I have shown and described a type of golf bag in which there is a central panel extending vertically at the rear of the bag and carrying links for effecting adjustment in the points of support of the bag. Golf bags of the type shown in said application as well as other forms and styles of golf bags are sometimes provided with a vertically extending bar formed of metal or other stilf material for supporting the bag so as to prevent it from sagging when carried and to enable one to stand the bag in an erect position upon its base. Such stiffening bars have heretofore interfered with the construction and arrangement of pockets for carrying-balls or other equipment used by golfers with the result that the ball pockets often project outward from the bag in a manner which takes up extra space in a crowded locker or store room and renders the bag bulky in appearance.

In accordance with the present invention, golf bags having such a vertically extending bar are provided with pockets which are located on opposite sides of the vertically extending panel and are arranged in a convenient and inconspicuous manner so that they do not take up extra space or interfere with the carrying of the bag and yet afford convenient locations for carrying used and new balls in separate compartments.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a golf bag with a novel type of ball receiving pocket.

Another object of the invention is to provide ball carrying pockets for golf bags which are located in convenient positions at opposite sides of a central panel.

A further object of the invention is to provide a golf bag having a vertically extending support with ball receiving pockets located on opposite sides of the supporting panel.

These and other objects and features of the present invention will appear in the following description thereof in which reference is made to the figures of the accompanying drawing.

In that form of the invention chosen for purposes of illustration in the drawing, the golf bag is indicated generally at 2 and is provided with a panel 4 which extends from the base 6 of the bag to the upper end or top of the bag. The panel 4 preferably houses a stiffening member or metal bar 8 and while ordinarily located on that side of the bag on which the handle 10 and shoulder strap 12 are located, one or more such panels may be located elsewhere about the sides or front of the bag if desired. A 2,861,613 Patented Nov. 25, 1958 typical form of golf bag embodying such a panel is shown and described in my copending application referred to above. However, the bag may be of any other form, style or construction wherein a vertically extending panel is present.

While the bag may have numerous pockets for receiving balls, sweaters, gloves and other equipment, the pockets of the present invention are located directly adjacent the panel and preferably on opposite sides thereof as shown at'14 and 16. Such pockets are generally triangular or tapered in cross section so that each pocket has a front face.18 which extends'outward from the panel 4 in substantially the same plane as the panel and generally tangentially with respect to the body 19 of the bag. The side 20 of the pocket extends inwardly from the front face 18 substantially at right angles thereto so as to intersect the body '19 of the bagZ along a vertical line or edge 22. The upper and lower ends' of the pocket are preferably .formedas tapered continuations 24 of the side 20 which are turned horizontally and secured to the front' face 18 along the upper edge 26 and the lower edge 28 of the front face. The opposite edges of the tapered ends 24 of the pockets are secured to the body of the bag 2 along the horizontal lines 30.

The body 19 of the bag itself forms the interior or base of the pocket, whereas an opening to the pocket may be forined vertically where desired, as for example, at 32 in the front face 18 of the bag. The opening can, of course, be located in the side 20 or along the vertical meeting edges of the front and side of the pocket or elsewhere. In any event the opening in the pocket is preferably provided with connecting means such as the slide fastener 34 for holding the pocket closed when the bag is in use while permitting ready access to the pockets when desired.

The construction and arrangements of the pockets thus provided serve to locate the pockets closely adjacent the bag so as to take up a minimum of space and avoid bulging or protruding constructions which would otherwise render the bag bulky and unattractive in appearance. Moreover, the pockets can be located near the shoulder strap or handle in an area which has not generally been utilized for such purposes heretofore. The pockets then are in a most convenient position for access even when the bag is being carried. Furthermore, the provision of matching pockets on opposite sides of the panel renders it easy for the golfer to keep his new balls separated from the old balls and to select the ball desired Without difiiculty.

While the pockets may be formed of two pieces of material, namely, the front and side only, it is of course possible when desired to form the top and bottom of the pocket as separate pieces secured by stitching or otherwise to the front and side members. Similarly, the pockets may open at the top and be covered by a downwardly extending flap if desired. Pairs of such pockets can also be arranged with their edges abutting when the bag has no vertical reinforcing panel or when the construction otherwise lends itself to such an assembly.

These and other modifications and changes in the form, construction and arrangement of the elements of the combination can be employed. In view thereof it should be understood that the particular embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing and described above is intended to be illustrative only and is not intended to limit the scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A ball pocket construction for golf bags including a vertically extending panel, said pocket comprising a front face projecting outwardly from said panel in substantially the plane thereof, a side member turned inwardly from the front face at approximately right angles thereto, the

A ball pocket construction for golf bags comprising a face member extending substantially tangentially from one side of the bag, one edge of said face member being secured to said bag along a vertical line, a side member projecting from the surfaceof said bag substantially perpendicularly to said face member and having a vertical edge secured to said bag along a vertical line spaced from and parallel to the line along which said one edge of the face member is secured, thetfree edges of said face membet and said side member being secured together whereby said face and side members cooperate with the surface of said bag to define a vertically elongated ball pocket which is generally triangular in transverse section. .and means for closing the bottom of said ball pocket.

A ball pocket construction for golf bags including a vertically extending panel, said pocket comprising a front w face projecting outwardly from said panel in substantially the plane thereof, a side member turned inwardly from the front face at approximately right angles thereto, the edge of said side remote from the front face being secured to the bag along a vertical line remote from the vertical edge of said panel whereby said front face and side cooperate with the surface of saidbag adjacent said panel to define a vertically elongated ball pocket which is generally triangular in transverse section, closure means covering the top and bottom of said pocket, an opening formed in said front face to permit golf balls to be put into and taken out of said pocket, and separable fastener means for closing said opening.
